Bummer. I'd liked what he did with Aladdin, but maybe now he'll available to direct the sequel?

I had the chance to interview Alan Menken and asked him about the Hercules live action movie.

Seems like he is not really involved with it (yet) but has heard about it obviously.

They still don't have a script? The film's been in development for so long...
In addition to all of the above, the Russo Brothers are also due to produce Disney's live-action adaptation of beloved animated classic Hercules which The Gentlemen's Guy Ritchie is due to direct - a project they say they are still "waiting on a script" for.

I'd imagine they've probably seen several scripts, they just haven't landed on one that Disney likes. What they're even looking for with this remake has probably been in flux over the last few years with Disney needing to rethink how they want to even handle their remake train.
Anyways, didn't Ritchie exit this movie like four posts ago?

Perhaps Guy Ritchie's departure is exaggerated. Maybe it's dependent on *when* Disney is interested in releasing the film (if they are at all) on whether or not he'll be involved, since I think he has several projects going.
Personally, I still don't see any point to making the movie if it's not a musical. There have been so many live-action Hercules films that have flopped, the only thing that would make it stand out is the music. Personally, I wouldn't mind if they put off making it (if they're determined to) for a while. I always thought Ariana Grande and Jeff Goldblum would be a good fit for Meg and Hades respectively (Ariana since she's a well-known artist that already had an interest in the role, and Goldblum because of his part as a villain in the Thor sequel years back that was hilarious), so it's a shame they're both preoccupied with Wicked. If only they could put this film off for a while until those two and Ritchie are available, then get JHUD/Lizzo and Devito for the Muses and Phil respectively, perhaps Taron Egerton as Hercules since he looks so much like the character and can sing, that would be a strong cast with several draws. And if/when Wicked ends up being a hit, having another musical film with Grande and Goldblum following soon after those two films' footsteps would give it better chances, too.

I don't want anglo actors, I want Mediterranean actors (who look Mediterranean because obviously there are Mediterraneans who are Celtic looking)
I'm tired of Hollywood doing a movie in ancient Greece or Egypt and casting British looking people, I want my big nose people

These casting rumors sound like complete BS, if you ask me.
Q: Who else are being considered for Meg other than Ariana Grande? Elizabeth Gillies perhaps?
Skyler Shuler: Not saying anyone should run with this as 100% fact but a name I hear Disney likes right now is Dua Lipa.

Q: Are Taron Edgerton and Michael B. Jordan still the top choices for Hercules? And do you have any hints as to who the Muses will be?
Skyler Shuler: Last I heard, Egerton was high on Disney’s “wishlist” as is Austin Butler, Jordan’s was not mentioned to me in my recent discussion with a source.

Q: Any actors and/or singers in the running for Hades and the Muses for Hercules?
Skyler Shuler: There is no one in the running for the muses at this time, I am not even 100% sure the remake will include the muses. Ready for this? Hugh Grant was a name I heard Ritchie (I do not know about Disney) wanted for the role of Hades.

Zane Phillips and Ariana Grande.
Though if they dont make it soon, Grande may be too old. Characters are 18-24.

Yes, and?

Meg is suppose to be in her early 20s I think and other princesses are in their Teens, which were played by women who were 10 years older than their characters like Emma Watson or Lily James, who definitely didnt look like teens. Aside from Belles autotune and dress hatred, both were well recieved and same would go for Ariana.
Although Liz Gillies would fit Meg perfectly as her Victorious character has the attitude of Meg, but I dont think she has huge household name recognition

Ariana looks very young. She can play the role without any problem and she's going to gain too much popularity with her rol of Glinda in Wicked.
Disney should take advantage of it and choose her for the rol. They need to have a great casting approved by fans to make this movie a hit. This time they need to play safe without trying new things like they did with Snow white and TLM

Dua Lipa would be fine, although I don't know why they'd be looking at her at all if this isn't a musical? She's not an actor normally, is she? Maybe they aren't looking for the Muses or Phil in the info leaking because they already know exactly who they would want for those roles (JHUD/Lizzo & Devito, respectively). Hugh Grant would be almost as good as Goldblum! I wouldn't have been on board if not for his surprisingly good turn as a villain in Paddington 2 a few years back.
Austin Butler would be almost as good as Egerton. He definitely has a sweetness in the eyes in most interviews I see of him, but Egerton looks the most like Hercules to me (and he's *also* really sweet in interviews), so I still hope they manage to get him if they ever make this.

I don't know Gillies at all to say. Ariana wouldn't be "perfect," but she'd be good and her being involved would help keep the soundtrack.
I've noticed a lot of articles mentioning Ryan Gosling for Hercules? I mean, he is a very good actor, so he wouldn't be bad, but he wouldn't be perfect for it either the way Austin Butler would have. I was really excited by the idea of Butler and Dua Lipa actually, them + JHUD, Lizzo, and Danny Devito would've been a strong cast. Hugh Grant or ideally the actor who plays the Wizard in Wicked as Hades would round it off well.

I think that people want Ryan as Hercules because of the old tv show that he made. I don't like him and I think that Austin would be a better choice. I don't like Ryand and I like him less since Barbie. Everybody was obsessed with him and he was everywhere.

Giving Hercules the Maleficent treatment is a horrible idea. I hope Disney doesn't follow through with the Russos' plan.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that "creative tensions" have been brewing on Hercules between the Russo Brothers and Disney. He claims that the filmmaking duo wants to shift directions and focus on a new story about Hades, as well as title the film after the god of the underworld. Meanwhile, Disney is more inclined to make a faithful adaptation of the 1997 animated film. It's unclear if both sides have come to an agreement yet, but it would not be shocking if the project remains in early development as the Russos continue to work on their Avengers sequels.
