Article about the story development of the film, including mentions of aborted attempts.
"Mind you, this was before Jennifer (Lee, the co-director of "Frozen") joined Chris on this project. So the Anna character (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is what the Gerda character is called in Disney's version of "The Snow Queen") was there. And we knew that there would be a Snow Queen in the picture. That we knew," Giaimo continued. "There was definitely a Kristoff character (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the character that Hans Christian Andersen called Kay in the original version of this fairytale). So those three were in place. But that was about it."
Jim Hill should be a little careful with his editor's notes though. He is falling into the same trap of believing that Kristoff=Kai based on the fact that they are both male.
Also, more impressions of the film:
But so far the trailers for "Frozen" have been somewhat lackluster, failing to capture that "classic Disney" spirit that the movie really embodies (I've seen it and it is spectacular). Well, that has just changed with an online-only trailer that wonderfully exhibits the tone and spirit of the movie. In fact, this trailer gives off the vibe that "Frozen" that could have followed, say, "Beauty & the Beast" in the Disney lineage. Because it really could have; it's that good.
Based loosely on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen," a story that Walt Disney himself tried unsuccessfully to develop in the studio's post-war years, "Frozen" follows Anna's quest to thaw Elsa's heart and return the kingdom to less icy conditions. Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), a gruff mountain man and Olaf (Josh Gad), a chatty snowman, join Anna on her quest. It's a magical movie, folks. The trailer calls it "The Greatest Animated Event Since 'The Lion King,'" which is pretty fair. It also doesn't hide the fact that the movie is (gasp) a musical, with some really, really wonderful songs.

Okay. It's official: FROZEN is officially complete. We're happy. It's ready. But still, I cry.

Fantastic read! I love how they considered doing Jack and the Beanstalk when they're doing it now.

But, I really hope they do Rumpelstiltskin. I have a great cast in mine.

On the same post from Playbill.com where the latest Frozen trailer was exclusively released, Ciarán Hinds is mentioned as part of the voice cast.
Was that already known? Does anybody know what character is he voicing?

Now That Was a Great Trailer. This trailer has me more hyped than before. I think the trailer is somewhat better than a lot of the Tangled Trailers. It doesn't avoid the P word in the trailer at all. I still put Wreck it Ralph on a higher totem pole, but this actually looks good.
Why does the trailer say The Best Since The Lion King since The Lion King in the trailer
I was going to say that it's silly that it's rated PG when Wreck It Ralph and Tangled were G, however before posting that I looked it up to be sure and they are both PG.

A ROUGH TRANSLATION TO HANS/ANNA DUET, "LOVE IS AN OPEN DOOR"
We’re two (twins?) with one brain
Something like “And I’m in this boat with you” or something haha.
We are two in one
Something about fighting passed the pain
We don’t have to feel anymore
Love is an open door (repeats)
With you, love is an open door

Weird, a painting that inspired a previous Disney film appears in this Disney film. Am I the only one seeing an irony in this?

In regards to one of your editor's notes, I think it's pretty clear that Kristoff isn't meant to be playing the role of Kai. He can only be see as an entirely original creation, as is much of the other story elements in this film. At a stretch, one could see him as a combination of all the assorted characters that helped Gerda along her journey.
Also pretty clear, I think, is that Elsa herself is the one playing the role of Kai, as the object of the Gerda/Anna's rescue attempts, as the one who has isolated him/herself, one through an external malevolent force and the other through her own self doubts. Similarly, they both have to redeemed through love. What they've done is basically combine the characters of Kai and The Snow Queen, which I think is a masterstroke.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Qindarka, I got to sit down with "Frozen" 's producer and its two directors three weeks ago Friday. And while you're right, the current storyline of this WDAS production does depart significantly from the fairytale that Hans Christian Andersen originally crafted. But this film's storyline prior to that point did in fact at least echo the shape of "The Snow Queen." In that the Snow Queen was supposedly to have lured a male character away from his village and then uses her icy magic to bewitch him. And it was then up to this male character's childhood friend -- the girl next door -- to make her way to the Snow Queen's icy palace and then use the power of love to save him / melt his icy heart.
Okay. I know. That's not exactly the story of the Snow Queen as Hans Christian Andersen originally wrote it. Especially since in the Disney version the Kai & Gerda characters were supposed to be kids. But -- rather -- young adults. Because -- given that this is the modern Disney Company -- they weren't looking to craft an animated film that only had kid appeal. But rather they wanted to make a movie like "Tangled" that appealed to adults AND kids.
Anyway, that was the story that Walt Disney Animation Studios was trying to get work. But the moment that they came up with the idea that Elsa & Anna were sisters, WDAS pretty much stepped away from doing a movie that at least followed the rough shape of Hans Christian Andersen's original fairytale and then began producing a film that was "inspired" by "The Snow Queen."
As to why Disney changing Gerda & Kay's names to Anna & Kristoff, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe they thought that these names would be more appealing to modern audiences.
This was Jim Hill's response to one of my comments on his site.

Apparentely, he's a guy named Mance Rayder, according to Wikipedia.

Mance Rayder is a character from Game of Thrones. No clue who he is supposed to be voicing here, minor character probably. Maybe one of the duke's goons.

You know, come to think of it, the guy who said "The land is covered in eternal snow" did sound a bit like him. But if this is Wikipedia, it's doubtful.

Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks were screened today to French theater owners at a Disney Convention, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They say they are the best Disney films in recent memory. Of course, they are neither critics nor Oscar experts, but it does bode well BO-wise, and we know how much the Academy likes high quality crowdpleasers…
Although I’m bound by an embargo and can’t really talk about Frozen, what I can say is that it is a film that smart young women will love.
More reactions will come out after screenings tomorrow
I will find it hilarious if after the MONTHS of criticism and complaints surrounding this movie on the internet, it's one of the best received Disney films in years.
Still don't want to get my hopes up but the new footage and positive buzz makes me optimistic.

Where did you get those quotes BTW?
I'm sure it will receive very good reviews, WDAS have been faring well on that front recently. The complaints were always premature, being based on very limited information or relating to social justice issues.
That is not to say the film will necessarily be of good quality, that being up to the individual opinions of viewers.
