First off: Jade, if you go to the first part of this thread, the first entry goes into a good amount of detail about what is wrong with the Platinum transfer.
Now that the blu ray is out (which I have no intention of buying), I am curious. Can anyone do screen grabs of the shots we have been "studying" on this thread so we can compare?
Also, looking at the screencaps on the review on this site, the colors seem to be a bit better... less blue tinted. Am I nuts?
So does it looks just like the Platinum dvd, but in HD???
Hmm, that's quite some work. I might do it if no one else does it first, but long story short, the restoration is the same, the transfer is the same, the colours are the same, only the resolution has been bumped to 1080p.
check the first post on this page (mine) to see some screengrabs of the BD and compare to the OP

What's with all the winking!?

Every post on this page has a wink!

Oh, god! Now I'M doing it!

THE MADNESS!

*dies*
...In all seriousness, there are undoubtedly SEVERAL areas of concern with this restoration. (The comparisons speak for themselves) And frankly, I can't see how those images don't BOTHER some people. Just like the clouds being taken out of the Lion King, or the fuck ups on Beauty and the Beast's 'special edition,' (specifically the inexplicable background change in Something There) these are all horrendous examples of tampering with the original films and, really, need to be addressed. Because if they aren't, Disney will assume they have carte blanche to treat these movies however the hell they want. And the message, I think, that pointing these flaws out sends is that, "No, this sloppy work isn't acceptable for a company that is so damn wealthy. FIX THEM. Or expect to lose my money as a consumer in the future." ...

Oh my God... it looks terrible!!! Did you guys see that screen grab that has Cinderella and the Prince with the clock bhind them striking midnight??? Look at her face!! Its like all the detail is gone...look at the (lack of an) outline in her arm....
I thought the point of HD was to SEE more detail...
Lord...

Have mercy.......
The Disney Classics are gone.
I believe this is going to ruin Disney.
The new generation will never know what these films used to look like with all the detail.....
And therefore have a completely different and much more shallow view of these films.
It's also very surprising to me that the Blu fanboys are so happy with less detail? Can you tell me what you love so much about that?

Nope

Actually an understatement for a billion dollar company that does this to its films......

Not that I'm trying to defend Disney, but just trying to understand, could it be possible that the masters used for the DVD restoration had deteriorated since the LaserDisc had been made so they were unable to get a print with the finer details?

It doesn't look like these are source problems though. They look like restoration problems. I'm having difficulty believing these are the only negatives that have deteriorated. Bumbo is much older for example, the Blu-ray is gorgeous. Also, at the time when the LaserDic was released they didn't use the original negatives, they used dupes. The first movie released which has been restored from the original negatives was Bambi in 2003. If anything , the BD should look better

I quite distinctly recall a restoration featurette on Snow White's Platinum DVD in which it was said that for the film's 2001 DVD release, the restoration house started the process using the original nitrate negative.
Also, what are dupes? Copies of the original negatives (i.e. 2nd generation, 3rd generation, etc.)?

yes, copies of the original negatives.
I can't comment on that featurette since I don't have the Platinum release. Here's the article I based my answer on, really great article
http://whysoblu.com/a-talk-with-disney- ... -of-dumbo/
Now that you can create these new transfers based on the original negative, are you planning to go back to the previous releases, like “Sleeping Beauty,” “Snow White,” and use the original element there?
(Sarah Duran-Singer): We actually have. Any – those Blu-rays were – they were done in the same manner that we did “Dumbo.”
(Sean Ferguson): Oh, I thought I heard you say that you weren’t able to do that until “Bambi.”
(Sarah Duran-Singer): Oh, well, yes, but “Bambi” was the first one was did in 2003, so anything after 2003 was done in this manner.

I think I deserve a job at Disney's restoration team! I fixed Cinderella with an app on my phone

Before

After (voilà more fairy dust)

Before

After (color correction)

It's sort of sad that a Disney fan can do a better job on a phone than a so-called professional at his work by a computer...

^ Exactly! That was the joke. The fact that you can fix the colors on a cell phone app yet the professionals can't be bothered to change it. Although in their minds they already fixed it lol.

I just watched this for the first time and really, I don't have a problem with it. Since I haven't seen it on VHS I guess I am unaware of the 'proper' colours and thickness of the outlines and all, but running at 24fps I couldn't fault it. And this is from someone who gets irked by the blurry scenes when Prince Phillip rides through the forest in Sleeping Beauty, which disrupts what is otherwise a perfectly restored film.

I think the blu-ray did the best job for the best restoration ever.
