Ridiculous. This just shows how out of touch the company is with consumers and fans of their films.

Releasing Beauty and the Beast and Monsters Inc in theaters after a blu-ray release was extremely foolish and its not surprising at all that they didn't do better at the box office when so many people had recently purchased the films.

TLM on the other hand has been unavailable for YEARS and has a huge devoted fanbase. There's no question in my mind that it would be successful.

Absolutely frustrating.

Disney is totally out of control :/

Why does it have to be this year ? I was really looking forward to everything The Little Mermaid. Such a bad news for the start of the year !!!!!

To save their precious money, could they have not released it for say, a month or so in the cinema just as was. I really do feel it would get a good return at the box office.

I think they're still doing the 3D restoration just a 3D Blu-ray. Someone over on blu-ray.com mentioned the second Starwars was coming the next week in 3D and several other big movies were following in the month. I don't think Disney will invest that much in advertising for it not to do well financially, theres too much competition. That and the fact that if they follow the formula of the other diamonds it will be released Oct 1st. It would effect the blu-ray date if they moved it to october.

I'm not following. Is the blu-ray supposedly coming August or October?

Blu-ray.com hasn't yanked the 3D Diamond Edition artwork for TLM out, so obviously Disney's still working on the conversion.

Not to mention this comment left at the bottom of the LA Times article you linked: "This article is false - Disney has not canceled LM3D, because I've been working on the conversion for the past several months and have not stopped, obviously they'd call us off by now if this were true. Disney is only changing the release date. This article is obviously slanted to bash 3D. No one HAS to pay 3D price either, if you don't like 3D, or don't want to pay the extra ticket price then don't. People still pay the extra $6 for IMAX movies as well. People complain there aren't enough jobs in this country on the other hand, what about those of us that do this for a living?"

Could they be moving this release to 2014 for the 25th Anniversary? I wouldn't mind waiting if it meant a theatrical release still.

I don't know, maybe. But it wouldn't do as well as TLK did, if it comes out after the Blu-ray release.

I remember that the TLK re-release was a spur-of-the-moment thing to get interest in the Diamond Edition coming out just two weeks after (and it worked). If Disney wants to try and emulate that success, they need to theatrically re-release TLM before the Diamond Edition comes out this year.

I don't care when the theatrical release happens anymore ('cause I know they're gonna keep switching dates and it's too much for me), just release the bloody Blu-ray this year.

I'd be more inclined to believe that comment if the person who posted it had mentioned their name. How can anyone trust it otherwise? It's basically an anonymous comment. Nonetheless, I hope it's true and we do get a 3D release after all even if it's just on Blu-ray.

If that were true wouldn't they have included it in the updated schedule? They included five films slated for 2014. Why didn't they include TLM?

Who knows, I'm sure it's just wishful thinking on my part, BUT we can hardly take what Disney has scheduled as being set in stone. Everything still seems pretty crazy with the company when it comes to consistency and following through with their announcements.

A slot on blu-ray.com means nothing anyone can update cover art or make a movie slot I've done it myself before. They wouldn't stop the 3D restoration if they're still doing the bluray which I myself think that they are.

You mean like "John" or "John Smith" so that their employer can know exactly who to fire for violating customer confidentiality?

But I don't think it constitutes breach of a non-disclosure agreement to vaguely say that you are working on a project that has already been officially announced. It happens all the time and it's really not a big deal.

It's like going back two years to look at Disney's 2011 slate, fast forward to May 2011 and asking 'Why did Disney schedule TLK 3D for September, and not BatB'?

It's possible Disney could re-instate TLM 3D on the calendar, but I wouldn't count on it. Maybe Disney will have pushed back the Diamond Edition release to allow for it... just wait until we get a thorough review of the Peter Pan one in a few weeks.

If bloody PLANES is getting a cinema release, they can jolly well go and release Mermaid in the cinema! How can they put that crap in and pull a Classic ?

I know I sound dramatic, but I am really dissapointed in Disney at the moment...
