If anything, Saving Mr Banks shows Travers in a more positive light than she apparently was like in real life. In making the story from her point-of-view, it allows the audience to understand why she was unreceptive to the songs or little things like Mr Banks having a moustache.

I really enjoyed this film. For me, the history behind the Disney movies has always been my favorite thing, so this movie was definitely up my alley. I think that the scenes of Travers' childhood were great and very necessary to understanding why she was the way she was. I absolutely loved all the scenes with the Sherman Brothers. I think any Disney fan should see this film, and if it does well, I wonder if Disney would make any more docu-dramas about any of their other films in the future...! (And I agree with Marce82: "very unusual" kind of does describe the film- it's just such a different kind of film for Disney to make!

I just got back from seeing this and, like Amy said, I've always enjoyed the history behind the Disney Studios - and behind filmmaking in general - so I was already sort of pre-disposed to like this... and I did! Terrific performances all around, and although Tom Hanks doesn't give what will be the 'definitive' Walt Disney performance, the heart was still there. It was a lot more melodramatic than I was anticipating from the trailers and advertisements, but they were wonderfully enacted, so I'm glad they were there. Recommended to all Disney fans, for sure!

Saving Mr. Banks came in 5th place this weekend at the box office with a little over nine million dollars. Total Gross so far including the December 13th is a little over $15 Million. It apparently cost 35 million to make. I'm not sure if that means it bombed or not.

It's been received wonderfully over here, but I'm not sure of the figures for the UK market ? Like literally everyone has been telling everyone to go and see it and how marvellous it is. So that is positive, but I don't know how that has equated to 'bums on seats'.

Pre-Christmas December movies usually open below what they would typically make in other months (there's a reason no December has made over $100 million on their opening weekends), because of people preparing for the holidays and focusing on shopping. Saving Mr Banks should have strong legs through Christmas and New Year's and if it gets a Best Picture Oscar nomination, that should help it a bit, too.

Ah ok I see, so it's likely that it won't open huge and sink extremely quickly then as some larger movies can ? That's nice to know.

I just saw it today, and besides the fact tat I liked it, the OCD in me couldn't help but notice the various Disney movie posters around the building.

In the reception room, you can clearly see Snow White and Fantasia on the halls on the way to Walt's office, while when you come in, there are also ones for Pinocchio and 101 Dalmatians. But it's the rehearsal room I'm most fascinated by. I could clearly see ones for The Living Desert and Pollyanna (great choice, btw), but I think there are more which I wasn't able to grab an eye on. Did anyone else notice those?

I can't wait to see this next weekend!

Overall, I really enjoyed and was inspired by this movie. Probably my favorite movie of 2013.

Never mind that most of these tumblr losers probably never heard of Travers before in their lives, but I love how is it that they get angry that she's misrepresented. No Disney fan seems to give a shit about Walt.

I do think it was strange Travers' motherhood was erased, considering how much parenthood was a subject of the movie.

I noticed! Loved those touches! 101 Dalmatians was released in the year P.L. Travers met Disney, and its author, Dodie Smith, had secretly wanted Disney to make a movie from her book. I'm sure it was a huge difference, going from Dodie Smith to P.L. Travers.

Why are you always so obsessed with movies making box office? I thought it was at first a "KEEP 2D ALIVE!!" issue, but I see you're just concerned for the money.

It doesn't matter if the movie is shit, as long as it's Disney it has to make money no?

Because if it succeeds at the Box Office, Disney might make more films like this in the future.

What disneyboy said. Although I find box-office fascinating, because I've always been interested in numbers. However, it also gives a good idea of what movies Hollywood will make in the future. As somebody who wants to see more movies about the behind-the-scenes of the Disney Studios, Saving Mr Banks being successful could certainly lead to that.

I think if it makes, at least, $70 million, Disney will be satisfied enough with that number.

Just returned from seeing it and I was blown away. Found myself crying in places memories of growing up watching Mary Poppins with my parents, was raised/adopted by my grandparents. My dad passed away a few years ago and my mom is in the final stages of alzheimer's disease so was rather bittersweet. But Tom Hanks nailed the role of Walt Disney, Emma Thompson was brilliant must admit I haven't seen much of her work but she is a very gifted actress The 2 gentlemen who portrayed the Sherman Brothers were spot on as well. Enjoyed seeing in the credits all of the stills from Mary Poppins as well as the note that Richard Sherman had been a consultant with the music.

Also on another note: at a screening earlier this month Julie Andrews & Dick Van Dyke were in attendance. Here's a cute photo with Emma Thompson in the background:

Glad to see this huge resurgence of interest in Mary Poppins.

I dont think Disney is too concerned with the opening numbers since Oscar buzz and competition generates a lot of revenue.

I saw it yesterday and wow was it good. One Star though that's not being talked about is Collin Farrel. He was just as good as Emma Thompson in this film.

There were many things I picked up on about Roy and Walt's relationship as Roy E. Disney told me that I don't think I would have picked up on. Roy E. Disney telling my family that Walt was the dreamer and Roy O., his father was the practical one and in one scene when Walt is telling Pamela Travers that the bars on the carousel were maed of 24 Karat Gold he says that his brother Roy didn't agree to it so that's why Walt did it while Roy was out of town

Regarding Tom Hanks' role as Walt Disney, there were quite a few times where All I saw was Walt Disney, however more of the time it sounded like Tom Hanks which let's be understandable no one can replicate Walt so I think Tom Hanks did a great job

Oh gosh yes! I'd forgotten to praise Coliin also! He's wonderful, as is Ruth Wilson as his wife; I felt her desperation and heartbreak.

The one scene that showed Ruth Wilson that I thought was one of the darkest parts of the film how she almost commits suicide by drowing herself, but PL Travers as a little girl saved her
