For anyone who doesn't have the soundtrack or just wants to double dip, the new two-disc soundtrack is amazingly comprehensive. It was worth it for me just to have Nikki Blonsky's "I Can Wait". She sounded AMAZING in it.

I guess because I love the movie so much I expected more from the DVD. While the 70-minute doc was very interesting and in-depth, it left me wanting more. What about screen tests, read throughs, Travolta's makeup process, dancing lessons?

Overall though it's hands down better than any other major DVD release this year (except for that awful slipcover ).

that's exactly how i feel...its even creepy, i also expected the table reading of the cast and more on nikki blonsky's achievment.
not to mention a bigger featurette with references to the musical and the original

The Wig Bomb scene alone kicks the musical's ass. Original Velma played amazingly by Deboarh Harry > Musical Velma played lacklusterly and corpse like by Michelle Pffeifer.

The musical was lackluster at best, way too happy, the songs gave me a headache and was NOT FUNNY AT ALL. It was pathetic. The only time I laughed was during the Black parade thing which was beyond overdramatic w/Queen Latifah crying . Also I could care less about this new cast, the original will always be the only one.

It boggles my mind how anyone could like it.

perhaps it is a generation thing, but I know I found the new hairspray a lot funnier than its counterpart, I enjoyed the cast, and I'm still singing the songs at this stage. The march- well I guess they felt it needed to be in there, but Im indifferent about it.
The only thing I feel the two movies are on the same level about, are the actresses playing prudy, whom I felt were both great.
The musical film...just seems to flow better to me.

doubt it, It's more of a "which you saw first" kinda thing.

the "new" hairspray is such a PC version of the original. and hell yes, the only thing we agree on, she was pretty good as prudy...too bad they made it more PC as well. T_T. The musical film will just be crap for a lot of reasons. and obviously.

I saw the 80's film first and other than the missing 'Wig Bomb' I can say I like the 2007 version a LOT more.

Why would anyone want a table read through of a musical? Really, what would be the point? Are you all screaming for a table read through of an action movie like Pirates of the Caribbean?

Auditions, fair enough. But generally audition footage is not included on DVDs. You rarely see people who don't get the part - obviously for good reason, and if you see people who do get the part, its often not that revealing. They often act out parts against "session" actors or the casting directors themselves (another reason perhaps they rarely appear) and sometimes aren't even acting out parts of the script. The Casting process is discussed in the documentary, including thoughts on why people were cast.

Gee, I'm still surprised anyone can complain about the Hairspray DVD. If you want to rant at anything, rant about the lackluster Disney DVDs we're being saddled with (most of the 2 disc Worlds End is nothing but short fluffy nonsense).

Not loaded with extras? Seriously?

Unless it's a movie I really love, I don't tend to watch all the extras anymore, but I did for this because I do REALLY love it. I just watched the entirety of Disc 2 in one sitting, but that is a reflection of how dedicated my butt is, not how much there is on here. The thing is absolutely LOADED with material, and for a change all of it was quite good with very little fluff. I noticed they didn't touch on some of the things that didn't work out -- the stage directors were to have done the film at one time and Shankman was rejected once before he got it -- but I felt everything that dealt with the production of this movie once it got in place was incredibly through. Plus, we FINALLY have a detailed, revealing doccumentary on the making of the 1988 film which was missing from its own barebones DVD, AND stuff about the stage version too. All the deleted and alternate scenes were really interesting to see, though I agree with the decision to go with what ended up being in the final cut instead. And I haven't even gotten around to listening to the commentaries on Disc 1 yet, which I'm sure add even more value.

We have footage from the table read and etc. inside the doccumentaries, but yeah, I don't think we need the whole thing there either. What we got was enough of a sense of it.

I just don't see how you can think this is anything less than one of the best DVD releases of the year. While it would have been nice if this were a standard two-disc set like the days a few years ago of old and we didn't have to pay significantly more for the extras, this time they were really worth it. Thanks to New Line for stepping up and providing a fantastic set as they usually do.

As far as which version is superrior, why do we even have to think like that? The new one is a total reinvention and doesn't try to be the original in any way, shape or form. I think they are both fantastic and stand as great companion pieces or individually as great films. Each has a unique take on the material and I find both extremely worthwhile. Both of them are on the shortlist of my favorite films ever made. To those who choose to appriciate one and not the other, well, that's their right; the presence of one will not harm the other (although we wouldn't have the musical if John Waters hadn't made the first one.) But I love 'em both.

I've FINALLY seen this movie

When I went to watch it, I had very little to compare it to since I've only seen random bits and pieces of the 80's version and only heard four of the original broadway songs. All in all I loved it, the characters were very well done and I must admit I much prefer John Travolta's voice over the original Edna's. I think the only parts that could have been improved upon were Without Love and You Can't Stop The Beat. I'm sure they could have squeezed in the Big Dollhouse scene therefore also keeping Without Love in it's original version as well. You Can't Stop The Beat really did drag on, and it seemed that the music was going at the rate pace but the singing seemed to fall behind a tad. Anyways I liked the original versions energy, which is missing from this one.

HOWEVER it could have been a lot worse so I can't really complain about it too much.

One thing I noticed is that this movie sucks you in from the first scene, my Dad doesn't care for John Travolta and never planned on watching it, and yet the second my Dad stopped to watch this movie for a few seconds to see what the fuss was about he was trapped. He ended up watching the entire movie. This movie definatley has the ability to keep you watching from start to finish. All in all, I can't wait to get this on dvd

It pretty much sounds like some features being carried over and the Wal-Mart exclusive DVD. As much as I love this movie, I will skip this release.

I have the 2007 Deluxe Edition and the Wal-Mart bonus disc. Is it confirmed that only those 5 new featurettes are the only "new" things to be included? Or is there gonna be some more stuff?

I was soo excited! I thought it was the original hairspray I was like finally!! Not a needed buy for me.

Duh.

It'll be a nice option for those who don't wish to spring for the 2-Disc set due to its price tag, but would love more bonus materials. (I only just recently got the 2-Disc set myself, and only because I happened to find it at a secondhand shop for $10. This a few months after finding the 2-CD soundtrack at Rite Aid for $5. )

They just think we are idiots, It will probably be 99.9% recycled stuff

Nothing there worth double dipping for....but I wish the stage show had been recorded for posterity...THAT I would buy for sure!
