Well, audience score is starting at 88%

Let's see how it goes once people actually get to watch it.
88% for audience score is awful, it's going to get a B+ cinemascore

I've only perused the reviews, but just from a glance, this feels different than the initial antipathy Elemental received for a few reasons. The exact points critics are taking issue with are more specific than just a general sense of "Why doesn't this make me feel like Toy Story did??????" And more often than not, these points are speaking to the exact concerns I had when this film was announced.
Like, I don't think Disney has ever been in a worse position to offer up a sweeping statement about its own legacy given just how twisted the relationship to Disney's legacy has become in the eyes of both the public and Disney itself. All those self-deprecating headlines run during the LA remake parade was bound to have consequences sooner or later. Any resulting film was bound to be either wildly incoherent or else default to manufacture setting and general toothlessness. (I mean ... I was kind of hoping it wouldn't, but ...) Then there's been the complaints about the soundtrack, which I can say for myself has not been impressive.
Just the same, I hope it's a reasonable success, at least financially, given that Disney's had a hard year and I just know that unless it somehow pulls ahead of their other departments, their animation field is the one that'll suffer the most.
I'll be seeing it tomorrow, I hope, but I probably won't be posting my thoughts until the weekend at least because RIGHT after I get out of the theater I go to work, and I'll be there basically be planted there until late Friday night.

Let’s try not to be all doom and gloom, please. Surely, Wish will do big numbers despite its… less than favorable reviews. Besides, according to a friend of mine, Disney’s too big of a company to just go under.

We now have the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus: “Wish earns some tugs at the heartstrings with the way it warmly references many of the studio's classics, but nostalgia's no substitute for genuine storytelling magic – no matter how beautifully animated it might be.”

I Wish Upon A Star That This Movie Was Over!

Took my teenaged kids to see it yesterday. Everyone liked it. After having had the day to reflect on it, I think it's a decent movie, but it seems to lack tension (i.e., a reason why you should be invested in the characters). I'm not sure whether that's due to the story itself or the execution of the story; I plan to see it again to try to solidify my thoughts.
I'd rank this one in the middle of the WDAS canon. It's not bad, but it doesn't feel great either.

Luke expresses a similar opinion in his review!

I liked it, personally. I feel a little iffy about where I'd rank it for now. Not as good as
Frozen, TP&TF, and
Raya--more on level with
Frozen II,
Zootopia, and
Encanto. Valentino turned out not to be too bad, thank God. He was the thing I was most worried about. The music is the other thing I was always going to be skeptical about. Not quite as bad as I feared back when the composer was first revealed, but not great by any means. My biggest criticism was the start of the film was pretty rushed. A little more time spent there in those early scenes, I think it would've been a little better. TBH, the film felt incredibly short to me? Of course, it was an hour and a half after I got out, but it felt like I'd only been there for 40 minutes or something. And sometimes it felt slightly more childish at times than you'd expect (particularly the song after Star is first revealed)--a similar thing I noticed with
Elemental, actually. Also, the modern way the characters speak that some complained about with
Raya and
Encanto hit me harder in this film than those.
My favorite scene was when Magnifico confronts Asha and her family at their home. I thought Magnifico was a decent villain, their best since Facilier no doubt. Loved his design--made me think of White Diamond and Sarumon. Asha herself was fine, she reminded me a lot of Raya from that film as far as feeling more undefined than other characters in the film.
Asha becoming a Fairy Godmother was a really nice ending for me; I think for a while we thought she'd become Queen at the end, this was a cuter idea. Star, Magnifico, and Valentino were the best parts of the film for me. As for the other characters, I liked Asha's mother, Dahlia, Sneezy, and Dopey alright, the other Teens were forgettable (or annoying, in Grumpy's case). Anyway, the film was incredibly pretty, hopefully a start for a new direction for them visually. I'd give it somewhere around a 6.5 out of 10.
Lots of references--I felt like
Sleeping Beauty got the most in the end. Strangely, I almost think they referenced Morgana from Return of the Sea of all things when Magnifico is on top of the tower with the wishes--everything's green, he was clutching the staff and saying, "Wishes do come true...!" I'd laugh if that was unintentional, it was so similar to that moment. The images over the credits were really neat. I wonder though--I thought they were supposed to play "Once Upon a Studio" before the film, but they didn't?
Thankfully they were giving out free posters of the film at the front of the theater.

Need to pick up the soundtrack next. I wonder if it'll get a physical release (without score) or if they might release the whole thing (songs and score) together digitally at some point?

Well, there it goes, I probably got Wish spoiled because it only releases in my country two months from now due to Disney's terrible strategy. This isn't even the first time it happens due to this crazy delayed release happening in the 2020s like it's 1953.

At All Costs was obviously written as a love duet between Asha and the Star (as human) and they repurposed it for something else in the movie (they changed the original lyrics "love you" to "promise"):

Wish has received A- CinemaScore:

A- is not good but at least not horrible, many of us were really thinking it could get a B like Strange World after that horrible audience score in Rotten Tomatoes
Anyways I hope the movie is good at least to me, it releases in France a week later for some reason
It will flop for sure (200M budget) but if it has good legs like Elemental (another movie movie flopped) it will not look like a disappointment at least

I am purposely not reading comments about the movie here, cause I haven't seen it yet. I have already had a plot point spoiled by watching an online review! Darn!
I don't think this has been posted, it's DeBose singing the main song at Disneyland Paris:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXHfXa_5jGM
There was a lot of debate when Little Mermaid'23 came out and there was a video of Halle Bailey and whether she was lip-syncing. DeBose is definitely singing for real. Not a perfect performance, but it's a hard song! Good for her.
I also wonder if they didn't make her grow her hair long and style it like that to look like Asha hahahaha.

Disney should have just rereleased the original Snow White in theaters to celebrate their 100th Anniversary and called it a day.
I have no plans to see Wish until it’s on DVD, but I could definitely get a group of friends to go see Snow White on the big screen.
There were 10 of us who went to see the 60th Anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds at the cinema last month.
Happy Thanksgiving

to all!
The gang and I will be screening Saludos Amigos (80th Anniversary) and Peter Pan (70th Anniversary) later today after our turkey dinner!

I’ll do you one better. They should’ve released a Mickey Mouse movie instead.
Oh well.
Maybe in 2028, for Mickey Mouse’s 100th birthday, they will.

When I was on Amazon downloading the soundtrack, they did have vinyl and CD versions, I believe.
I see
Wish again this afternoon. I'm looking forward to it and my friend is really excited to see it the first time.

I hear ya, buddy!
10 or 12 of the best/most significant Fab 5 shorts and Silly Symphonies to mark the
Centennial of the Walt Disney Company.
I’d be there for that!!!
