Thanks for that! I couldn’t read the names of the movies in the theatre, because it all happens so fast!

Tangled wrote:Maybe because Meet the Robinsons was in production for a couple years before Lasseter got his promotion, so he had little control over its story. On the other hand, his leadership greatly influenced Bolt. From what I recall, he was the one who suggested many of the changes that altered Chris Sanders' original pitch (American Dog) to Bolt, forcing Sanders to leave Disney in pursuit of more creative control. Then, Bolt was basically written from scratch under Lasseter's reign.
Yes,
Meet the Robinsons was more advanced into production than
American Dog when Disney acquired Pixar and they surely could make more changes to the latter, but as Sotiris pointed out, John Lasseter also suggested important changes to
Meet the Robinsons and is the first Disney film in which he’s credited as executive producer. So it would make more sense to me if they included it among the films of this new era.
Anyway, I don’t have anything against John Lasseter, I actually admire him as a director (
Toy Story is one of my favourite films) and unlike many people here I think he has done a good job at Disney. Though I don’t think he’s a god or the new Walt Disney. What I don’t like is when he and others lie to us about things, like they did about the reason behind
Tangled’s title change or when they say that choosing between 2D or 3D for a new film at Disney is up to the directors.

New Moana artwork by
Neysa Bové.
What are those round things? They sort of look like the trolls from Frozen.

That look like balls of fluff with eyes, arms, and legs. I'm guessing they'll be cute, voiceless sidekicks (a la Minions, etc.)

I'm already annoyed by them.

How many sidekicks does this movie need? They already have a pig and a rooster.

Well... You remember how many sidekicks Ariel started out with?

At first sight, the green ones look a little like turtles to me

tropical versions of the snowgies from Frozen Fever...
actually they also remind me of the kodamas from Princess Mononoke.. maybe they are some kind of island spirits which would actually be kinda cool.

The studio is
celebrating 10 years since Lasseter took over WDAS with the following commemorative poster by Jin Kim (Meet the Robinsons is excluded again).

They are probably based on creatures from Polynesian folklore. I mean since they did some research into Polynesian folklore, I have a feeling they would have come across some interesting underused magical creatures.

Yeah, I think this is the most apt comparison.

They're also kinda reminiscent of the susuwatari from Spirited Away. Although both of those had more of an eerie feel to them. These seem much more cute and saccharine.

It would be more perfect if
Meet the Robinsons was included. Then they'd be celebrating 10 years and 10 films. And it's a shame that Moana won't be in traditional animation, the hand-drawn concept art and drawings from the film look fantastic.

Is it just me or is Moana kind of chubby?
Is that some new kind of politically correct animation?

I like her design because it's a bit more realistic.

I think that's exactly what this is. Well, that and trying to be true to their culture. We saw a similar thing with Lilo and Stitch.

According to Lin Manuel Miranda:
-There will be a giant, musical crab as a character
-There will be a villain song.

We truly live in an amazing time now that Lin-Manuel Miranda is writing the songs for an animated Disney film. He can be as intense and experimental as he wants. Seriously, the excitement never hit me until now.
Meanwhile, as I type this, I'm listening to music on my phone and "Satisfied" pops up for the 100th time since I downloaded the Hamilton soundtrack a week ago. Yes.

Finally, we haven't had a gone villain song in ages.

I'll be honest that I haven't listed to the OBC recordings for Lin Manuel Miranda to know anything about him, but I really hope this movie is fantastic. Not just because I'd like to see M&C have another hit, but because I've been longing for another great Disney villainess to join Yzma and Ursula among the modern era.
With the fluff-ball characters and now a giant musical crab, I'm guessing the "roadtrip" aspect of this movie (John Lasster copyright) will be Moana and The Rock visiting different islands with different species/wonderous things. Sort of like The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in The Chronicles of Narnia.
