Skyler Shuler also said on
The DisInsider that she'll be called Athena, but maybe it's just an assumption on his part.
The trade could not confirm who she is playing but as far as I have been told, she will indeed play Athena, Ariel’s mother and Queen of Atlantica.

I wonder if she's going to die. Honestly I don't know what's more misogynistic - not showing the mothers at all or having them only to see them die. Both ways make these female characters expendable. Aurora's mother didn't even die in the original.

There is a flashback scene in The Little Mermaid III that shows how Ariel's mother died. If they do include Ariel's mother, it will probably be either as a flashback or they will do something similar to the live-action Cinderella and start the film showing Ariel as a child.

Awww happy for her! I remember her in Mary Poppins Returns!

There's no way they'll keep her alive for the entirety of the film. It would mess with the established structure of the narrative. Like estefan said, she'll either appear in flashbacks or early in the film when Ariel's a child which is the most likely scenario.
By the way, the Deadline report claims that in the remake Ursula will be Ariel's aunt.
Halle Bailey will portray Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of being a human, while Melissa McCarthy is playing her evil aunt Ursula. Javier Bardem is on board to play King Triton.

The main reason for the existence of Ariel's mother in the sequels--and likely the same narrative use she'll have here--was clearly to soften / excuse Triton's xenophobia to the audience because" humans killed his wife." I imagine they will show the mother while Ariel is a child*, but they won't show her death. We'll hear Triton talk about how he hates humans because of what they did to her mother, etc. I kind of miss the days when Triton was just a jerk and Ursula was just a witch. Now on top of wondering how two species can be in the same family, there's going to be all the questions of how Ursula is white even though she's Triton's sister. And the fact that Ariel causes drama nonstop over her fascination with humans is kind of being cruel to her father if his wife was killed by them.
* I talked before of how I'd like a little prologue of Ariel being talked to about the surface world similar to how the grandmother tells the mermaid about each of her sisters' turns going to the surface in the fairy tale. I guess they could use Ariel's mother to do it.

I hope they rename Ariel's mother. Athena bothers me because of the real greek mythology.

What's wrong with the name Athena because of the Greek mythology?

Athena is Zeus's daughter. Zeus's brother is Poseidon whose son is Triton.

Oh man. Haha. The Little Mermaid III is even worse than I thought.

I am not saying that Athena in the film is the same goddess from the myth but it remains confusing to use that name.

Yes I agree. To use the names Triton and Athena together in that relationship is just weird and gross even if they aren't the actual gods.

Well, Zeus and Hera are brother and sister. Persephone is Hades' niece... This is kind of normal for Greek myth.

True. Disney could just do away with their familial relations if they're husband and wife.

I think we could have had a decent villain with Grismby in this version. Alas, that trope was already used in Cinderella with the grand duke.
I was wondering, if you guys could only choose between Ariel's magical voice or her signature hair color? Which one of the two would it be ?

I'm skeptical Bailey will sound as good as Benson even if she can sing. I mean, for example, Cravalho can sing, but her version of POYW was shouty and loud. I doubt it's because Bailey doesn't have it in her to deliver and more because I'd be surprised if the people involved with this would press Bailey to capture the subtlety of the song, considering they're lack of disregard and understanding for the property overall. Maybe they'll give Ariel a new song that's tailor-made for Bailey that will be good.

I was not talking about Halle at all. I was strictly focusing on the character of Ariel in general.
