mawnck, can you tell us more about Menken's songs? are they catchy, memorable, emotional and whimsical?

what other secondary characters haven't been mentioned before? do we get to see the King or Queen? Does mother Goethel have a sidekick?

thanks!! :)

There was a lot to take in trying to follow a story that was in various stages of unfinished (or unstarted) animation, and I didn't pay quite as much attention to the songs as some people wish I had. I thought they were really good, there's a nice variety, probably at least two are Oscar-worthy, Gothel has a great villain song ("Mommy Knows Best" or something similar), and there's a big, funny multi-character production number that takes place in a tavern. They are indeed catchy, memorable, emotional and/or whimsical. Other than that, I don't remember. (How's that for irony?)

There are no other major secondary characters. But you'll meet a bunch of fun folks in that pub.

As for the other questions, I'm afraid you're venturing into significant spoiler territory.

I'd suggest stopping by the discussion board where I started talking about all this stuff (and here too) ... it'll answer a lot of your questions, and I wrote a lot of it right after getting home from the theater, instead of a month later.

(1) Guys from the tavern number. And I read that the little girl is "toddler Rapunzel," but I don't remember there being a toddler Rapunzel in the movie, so it might be one of the little girls in the town square. Or maybe the toy people haven't been keeping up with all the changes to the movie. Or something.

(2) Rapunzel is the kidnapped daughter of the King and Queen. More I shan't reveal, but the concept art has a shot of R in fairly close proximity to the castle now doesn't it.

That character, behind the character with a chicken upon his left hand and Flynn Rider, that has an ax behind him and a giant hook on his left arm must be Hookhand, voiced by Brad Garrett.

So Rapunzel is an actual princess then? :)

YES. Like a for real narration? Ala Beauty and the Beast?

But wasn't it already known Rapunzel is a real princess. I think I've read somewhere the opening narration reveals she was stolen from her parents' palace.

I don't know if this it true...could you confirm it, mawnck?

Interesting spin on the original, because wasn't Rapunzel born to a peasant couple in the original tale?

That is correct. And for the hell of it, here's the original version of the tale:

the prologue plus the fact that Rapunzel was born a princess is not news. This has been around for months.

Well yeah, but narrated by Flynn.

Yes.

Comparing "Tangled" to The Brothers Grimm will just drive you crazy. They've made a mostly new story using elements of the old one.

Pardon me for saying this, but was Chris Collins supposed to narrate the story besides Flynn Rider, or Disney did change that to make Flynn Rider narrate the story besides Chris Collins?

Oh ... Mawnck
Can you tell us how is Rapunzel going to fit into the Disney Princess Franchisee ?? Will she have a 2D Version or will she be kept the same as she is ???

I thought the word "princess" was scaring off little boys and now they change the original story to make her a princess

I think boys would rather Flynn be a prince than Rapunzel be a princess (taboo word). Between making her a princess and dropping the more grim elements of the original story (like the prince being blinded), I'm starting to wonder what they've done to make this movie more "boy-friendly" beyond the title change. At least with the title Rapunzel, people would've associated the movie with the more "boy friendly" tale from which it was based. As it is, the title sounds like a new Lindsay Lohan movie.

new visual on Disney's facebook pages, comes with the following two quote:

There’s never a dull day in the life of Flynn Rider...

and

A chase scene between Flynn and the palace guards begins to take shape in this concept sketch for Tangled.

Flynn narrated the opening. And actually I thought it was a bit long, although I don't know what I would've cut to make it shorter. There's a lot of backstory to be galloped through.

It's possible they created this narration just for us to cover some early stuff that wasn't animated yet. Toddler Rapunzel?

Absolutely no clue. The only reason I am able to pontificate on any of this is that I was at the Ontario, CA test screening on May 25th. As for what's going on behind the scenes, I know as much as you do. Perhaps a little less.

Look closely .... there's some important info there about a couple of the characters you've already met. :D
jpanimation wrote:I'm starting to wonder what they've done to make this movie more "boy-friendly" beyond the title change.
I swear to you on the graves of my dog's ancestors, the filmmakers did not "make" this a "boy-friendly" movie. It is a boy-friendly movie, but not self-consciously so.

One more time: There is an excellent Disney movie being finished up in Burbank right now. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to ignore the goofballs in marketing. They're trying to get this thing categorized in everybody's mind so they can market it more easily.

The actual movie defies categorization, because it has very wide appeal. It is an EVERYBODY-friendly movie.

Some guy named Walt used to make similar such things.
