Did they make her a blonde?…. why?

These remakes just give me giant headaches constantly.

It looks Greek. Really weird.

Is Pinocchio still set in Bavaria? I don't think we heard anything about the setting, but I assumed they kept the same setting as the animated film. Giving the Blue Fairy a toga-like dress doesn't make sense given the time period and location, even if she is a fantastical character.

Pinocchio recently had some test screenings and from what I hear, the movie does a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. One source said, “Tom Hanks is unrecognizable as Geppetto, he looks exactly like the animated version.”

I think she looks good blonde! It goes so well with the blue dress!

Here I disagree. I feel like a fairy like her can have a Greek (yup Divinity, you're right it looks Greek) dress because she is either a star or is a being that lives on a star. She's old. She probably existed since Greek times. But, I admit the dress is disappointing as it's not as nice as the original. And I wouldn't mind a dress of the setting's times, but that would be like a 19th century dress! I don't believe her dress in the animated film was very 19th century at all. It actually looked of an earlier or even completely timeless time.

I always thought Disney's Pinocchio was set in Italy like the original story. Most of the characters have Italian names, after all. It always confused me why Pinocchio wore lederhosen. But now researching it, a city in Bavaria named Rothenburg served as an inspiration for the movie's production design.

Yes, estefan, Pinocchio is set in an Italian land, but it's also got German influence. They didn't pick a real place. They made an Italian and German storybook land. I agree with Super Aurora from that thread you found that it is somewhere near the Alps, though. An imaginary Italian and German land near the Alps.

German is spoken in the northern Italian region of Southern Tyrol on the border with Austria. This region has been part of different empires throughout history and was influenced by Bavarians, Austrians and Italians. In turn there are also Italian speaking communities in southern Switzerland.

Pinocchio takes clear influence from this entire region and its cultural diversity. It literally pans over a village in the alps in its opening sequence.

Pinocchio is an Italian story, thus takes places in Italy.....The Disney version was probably set somewhere in northern Italy, probably Tyrol or so..


Regarding the blu fairy, I bet they will add some CGI stuff to her outfit, lots of fairydust etc..,.

^Thanks for posting! Disney has also posted the first image on Twitter. I didn't expect Pinocchio's design to be almost identical to the original. I wonder if the same will happen with some of the other characters.

That said, I'm grateful they're hewing closer to the film they're remaking here unlike Mulan and TLM.

We already knew they were keeping Pinocchio's design based on the concept art they released back in 2020, so I wasn't surprised by that. As far as how the other characters will look, I don't believe they'll stay as close to the original for them. We already know the Blue Fairy will have a different hairstyle and dress, for example. I'm actually a bit disappointed by this first look. I thought Hanks as Geppetto would have looked better than this. It looks like he's wearing a Halloween costume or doing an SNL skit than truly inhabiting the character. Maybe it's the hair and the mustache's fault. They don't look natural at all on him.

I don’t think it looks Unnatural On him, I think it’s an excellent representation of the original animated movie, Not to mention Pinocchios design Which also works supremely well needless to say I’m actually even more excited for this in Peter Pan and Wendy after seeing these images!

I agree, I think Hanks looks great. I hope Hercules and Hunchback are more in this vein, the way B&tB and Aladdin were, too, rather than deviating to the point of becoming a travesty like Mulan / TLM.

I remember that concept art, but I thought they used the same animated designs there because they hadn't started working on the film and hadn't decided what the characters would look like yet. It seems I was wrong. I guess they'll keep Jiminy Cricket's design too since he also appeared in that concept art.

It's true; the Blue Fairy looks quite different and I imagine Luke Evans as the Coachman, for example, will too. The animated characters, like Honest John and Gideon, are more likely to remain the same. Though I love the original designs, I personally don't like they're reusing them for this movie. In my opinion, it makes the film look more like the 3D versions of Disney films Michael Eisner wanted to make.

Agreed. I want all new designs.
