I've been spending a lot of time with the "Short Films Collection" that was released this week. I've been starving for a new shorts collection since the "Treasures" sets were canceled, and I really, really, really want to be grateful for this release... but I just can't be.

With an absolute minimum of effort, this could have been so much more. There is absolutely no reason for this set to be so incomplete. There's more than enough space here to hold every single animated theatrical short from the 2000s and 2010s. Heck, there's enough room for the 1990s, too! I mean, I can understand excluding the Roger Rabbit shorts, since they're a separate series (and they already have a home video release). If fact, that's the exact same argument I would make for why the "Prep & Landing" short is so out-of-place on this disc. And I can even understand excluding "The Prince and the Pauper" (if you want to use the "featurette" VS "short" argument).

But all they had to include was...

- "Off His Rockers"
- "Runaway Brain"
- "Destino"
- "One By One"
- "Glago's Guest"

And BAM. You've got a complete, chronological, perfect set spanning almost 25 years of Disney.

I've been following Disney's home video releases for over a decade now, and I know how unpredictable and illogical they can be. I get it. I really do. But what irks me here is that they were so close. This is a complete "no risks" release. There was never any worry of low sales. Anna and Elsa are on the cover. It was always going to sell like hotcakes no matter what. If they had just included everything, they'd have created that rare home video release that 1.) throws a bone to the collectors, and 2.) appeals to the average family browsing around in Wal*Mart. Every single kind of fan would have been happy. That's such a rare opportunity. Companies dream of that opportunity.

The fact that they took that opportunity and ignored it is infuriating. So here I am waiting for a "volume two" when we could have had the whole kit and caboodle in one swoop.

So are we only getting the three DAC's this year? I can't believe they didn't release any of the other films that have not been released on Blu-Ray yet.

Well they haven't announced their December schedule yet so there's still a chance for something.

i am a little disgusted at the lack of films released on bluray this year. i had my fingers and toes crossed for a blu-ray release of the package films and "the black cauldron"....sadly, nothing the disney exclusive releases of vintage live-action titles was wonderful news, but, i am still mad that no bonus extras were ported over from many of the vault releases...who is running disney home video now?

100% fully agreed! Oh well, maybe those will be part of a second set?

Well, at least the US got *some* new back catalogue releases. 101 Dalmatians and Aladdin have been released in Europe years ago (without any new bonus content), but we are still waiting for The Great Mouse Detective, both Winnie the Pooh films, all the package movies, The Black Cauldron, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Bedknobs & Broomsticks. If English were my first language, I would just import all of those. The problem is I don't want to do without the German language tracks I grew up with.

I have the slight hope they will start to release more frequently again next year with the start of the Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Good question! All the movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios are now available on Blu-ray in Norway (except for the package movies made during WWII), as Disney seems to have abandoned their vault policy completely. A bit sad if that means no new releases here featuring new bonus material, since the new Blu-ray editions coming out this year are the same discs having been released earlier, including trailers for movies "coming in 2008" etc.

I am also hoping for completely new releases (with new transfers and bonus material) when Ultra HD Blu-ray are being introduced.

Wait, you already got "The Black Cauldron", "The Great Mouse Detective" and both of the "Winnie the Pooh"-films?
I thought the first hasn't been released anywhere on Blu-ray and the rest nowhere in Europe.

Amazon UK lists "The Great Mouse Detective", "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", as well as the double pack of "Fun and Fancy Free" and "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" for a release on the 9th of November. So maybe there is some progress after all.

Maybe they can release the other package films and TBC early next year and bring us finally a Blu-ray of Sword in the Stone that doesn't look like someone puked oil on canvas.

I won't get every single one of those, but I'm glad I held out for some of them and didn't try and import the US editions at crazy prices. I just hope that Fun and Fancy Free/Ichabod and Mr Toad comes with The Reluctant Dragon.

Now if they just released The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos, I could breathe a full sigh of relief...

My mistake, The Black Cauldron and The Great Mouse Detective are not (yet) available on Blu-ray in Norway, only on DVD. Both Winnie the Pooh movies are available on Blu-ray though.

Lol, there are more differences between European countries than I thought. I didn't mention the other film, because they are available in mainland Europe for a long time now. Didn't know that hasn't been the case in the UK!

Lucky You! I never understood why they didn't at least release the new Winnie the Pooh film on Blu-ray in (the rest of) Europe. Well, the first one will finally come to the UK, so I hope the second will follow and that both won't skip Germany again.

A while ago, Stitch Kingdom and various other sources have reported that Blu-ray re-releases of the three Toy Story movies are slated for November 29th, 2015 to mark the first movie's 20th Anniversary.

Pre-order pages have already appeared on Amazon:
Toy Story
Toy Story 2
Toy Story 3

It appears that these are Blu-ray + Digital HD re-releases, I have no idea if the discs will be identical to the one's that are already out.

Such an unnecessary rerelease. They should be finishing out the canon instead of rerreleasing stuff.

I look forward to the next release when all you can see is a character's pupil. How lazy can you get?
