Yes, MeerkatKombat, THAT cover. I love that cover. The background is spectacular, and I believe lifted from the film itself (isnt this the staircase that Aurora and Phillip descend from at the very end?).
I have always felt staircases were a big part of the iconography of Sleeping Beauty, since the spiral staircase she ascends to get to the spinning wheel is part of the ooriginal tale. Plus, Maleficent is an important part of that cover, but doesnt overpower it.
And DisneyDuster... yes, you can see the lines. But not at the right thickness in relation to the spaces they describe. They are so thin they tend to disappear unless one looks at it up close. And look at the curl over Aurora;s shoulder: in the lighter part, the linework fades into the background color (almost).
If you look at the film, the line thickness is always good, so that it doesnt look like just blotches of color (please refer to all the hooplah over the bad restoration of Cinderella if you want to truly understand this

)

The Platinum / Anniversary trailer was so good, this one will have to do well to beat it. Having the original voices in the trailer rather than the more modern storybook dub would be one way to improve it though, for sure.

Sorry guys, but I didn't like the cover. Too ordinary for my taste.

That's totally cool.
I think though a lot of us on this forum tend to favor the more simplistic designs as opposed to trying too hard.

Thanks for forgiving me, haha.

I think this is my favourite SB cover. 2003 2 Disc DVD.
I'm not in love with the red font - gold would have been better but I think a version with Sleeping Beauty in Gold was available (from my Google search)
Prince Philip looks ....well, more like Bill Nye the Science guy (and Philip is the hottest prince...boo Disney)
I also think the Disney DVD logo is WAY too big. Jee, I never could have guessed this was Disney DVD despite it saying Walt Disney Classics at the top.
So it's not perfect. We all know Disney need to work on their DVD cover art characters. However, I love the simplicity of this cover. No forest animals, no fairies, no cluttering or giant heads. Just an iconic scene. I also like the use of the light from the top corner.
I used to own the 2003 DVD but I was only allowed to upgrade to the Platinum if I gave this to my Sister.
Not sure whether to track this down again when the Diamond comes as this will be cheaper. Or get the Diamond. Or get both and then own this movie four bloody times. This will require me to be strong and resist.

That's definitely my favorite *kind* of cover art, although you're right that they botched it with the text. But I love when a cover simply shows an iconic scene with the main characters. Don't try to stuff the thing full to the brim with business. Another example that comes to mind is the Sword in the Stone VHS,
here. It just has Wart pulling the sword at the bottom, and the text along the top. That's it. That's all it need to work. With SitS release since, they've either busied it up too much with other characters or did some crazy angle that just looks dumb.

Disney's Divinity wrote:I really love that side pov of her sleeping, because her hair always looked gorgeous that way. Am I wrong, but was she mostly seen from that pov on most all the VHS covers? Probably wrong.
No, you're right, every American Sleeping Beauty home video releases thus far have had her sleeping in that horizontal head at left feet at right pose. Only now do we have an exception.
Disney's Divinity wrote:As an aside, you were joking in another thread about how they used a color nobody associates with
Cinderella for the cover, but that coloring is probably my favorite part about that cover, actually.

I know they always market
Cinderella with blues, but that pink/purple is the color I most associate with the film from my memories. That's just me though, I know; I get your point that most people associate the film with blues because that's the way they've always seen the character/film marketed.
No, I think Cinderella has a lot of pink and purple in it, too. I have always associated it with blue and purple personally. The glass slipper looks purple sometimes.
Marce82 wrote:The background is spectacular, and I believe lifted from the film itself (isnt this the staircase that Aurora and Phillip descend from at the very end?).
Yea. It might not be the exact one from the film but it's an illustration of it at least.
I now get what you mean about the linework. I don't have a problem with it, I don't think it makes some parts just look like shapes of color, but I get what you mean.
I have a suggestion for the cover. Aside from the lighting and shading I want, I want the title to be like this (sorry for the crappy job I did on it! I couldn't even tilt the image to line up right with the title in the midde, I don't know where or what to do for that, but here it is!):

That looks great! You should have changed the 50th Anniversary to 55th Anniversary

I think in European countries, the title won't be sideways. All previous Diamond titles didn't have it, and it looked great! I'm quite satisfied with the cover, but I'm interested to know if they'll give it a new restoration. I made a restoration comparison of all the other releases the film had over the years. In each case, they managed to make it look better than before, so it's a big possibility it'll happen again.

I'm loving the new art. It's so different from what they usually do and almost warrants a sideways title.
Of course, the only reason Maleficent is that prominent is because of her new movie, but with relatively equal screentime, it's fitting for both heroine and villain to have equal cover space.

Nice job Duster!! Love it. Or at least, the rough idea. I wasn't aware that the UK versions didn't do vertical titles, I'll have to go check that out!

The UK editions do come with vertical titles, I think Sicoe Vlad's referring to other European countries. I know the German diamond editions come with horizontal titles as suppose to vertical.

It seems to me that people aren't really excited about this release. Usually by now someone has posted all the new trailers on YouTube.
I know, personally, I wish they had released Aladdin or 101 Dalmatians as a fall 2014 diamond instead of Sleeping Beauty but we all know the reasoning behind their decision.

Trust me, that's not true. A number of factors have contributed in me not getting the trailer earlier than expected, otherwise it would already be up.

Knowing Disney's marketing, I'm betting that Maleficent is gonna be occupying most of the cover.

I just got the Jungle Book Blu-ray early and there's nothing special about the Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition trailer. Just some re-dubbed voices and an emphasis on "For the first time on Digital HD" and amazing picture/sound. Doesn't even mention any new bonus features.

Why do they redub these trailers? They did it with the Platinum Edition trailer and the Cinderella Diamond Edition trailer.
