DisneyJedi wrote:Speaking of princesses, if Rapunzel is a princess AND included in the princess line, why aren't Eilonwy, Pocahontas (this one I could be mistaken about) or Kida included in the line? I mean, sure. The Black Cauldron and Atlantis did not make back their budgets initially (while Pocahontas isn't as popular as the other "princess" movies), but neither did The Princess and the Frog, really. Yet Tiana is included in the princess line.

Don't get me wrong. I really liked TPatF and respect Tiana for being the first African American Disney princess, but I really kind of think it's unfair that neither Eilonwy, Pocahontas or Kida are included, seeing that Eilonwy IS a princess, and technically, so are Poca and Kida.
Pocahontas is an official princess.

As for the others it's mainly popularity, to be honest. Kida and Eilonwy are also quite different from the others. Eilonwy is a little girl, and Kida is a warrior princess. Tiana, on the other hand, got her foothold in the Disney Princess line way before her movie was release.

"TPATF" was just shy of its budget in domestic release, and more than made up for it when foreign markets were added in. "Atlantis" and "The Black Cauldron" made much less and earned less than stellar reviews, so it has both of those strikes going against it.

I was recently told by someone that worked with Disney that he was given this information by the "Disney Design Group."

"According to DDG, there are some "unofficial" (read: ugly truths) reasons why certain characters are and are not considered Disney Princesses.

Mulan and Pocahontas are due to political correctness, especially since, as yet, there is no actual Asian Princess. Pocahontas, as the daughter of a Native American Chief, can be technically considered a princess of a different culture.

Giselle, from what I understand, isn't not only because of the live action element, but also because Amy Adams wasn't an idiot and included a likeness rights clause in her contract for any and all advertising and merchandise.

Jane gets snubbed because the character is owned outright by the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the licensing agreement between the estate and Disney is reaching it's end, if it hasn't already.

Kida, sadly, while meeting the criteria in every other respect, gets dropped simply because Atlantis was a flop at the box office.

Rapunzel, as mentioned, will be made official soon."

So how is Mulan a princess? :P

I mean really Megara is married to a GOD, that puts her on princess level, for real.

Plus it's racist against the Greek people!

Uh . . . read this part again? "Mulan and Pocahontas are due to political correctness, especially since, as yet, there is no actual Asian Princess."

So yeah. Political correctness. I don't think Disney will worry about excluding the Greeks until people actually start complaining about it (or until they think Meg is a marketable character). So start those petitions today! :p

Anyway, I'm just passing information along. I've personally felt the choices made for the princess roster are mostly due to marketing and political correctness regardless.

I'm aware, but I think a lot of people will end up getting offended someday if we actually get a real Asian Disney princess who ends up replacing Mulan. Though I suppose Disney is playing it safe for now.

According to the Nostalgia Chick, it's because she hugged royalty. ;)

I never assumed that Jane was even once considered in the line-up. The clause with the Burroughs contract does sound very intriguing, though.

You know if Disney wants an Asian Princess so bad, adapt the Japanese's Tales of Genji. which has royality on both male and female side

I heard a couple years ago it's b/c Meg worked for an evil guy, and that would be a bad influence on kids. Ahhh, I love you Wikipedia!

"One of the most hilarious and hair-raising tales ever told."

Oh yeah. Because there's nothing that spells comedy like parents letting a neighborhood witch take their daughter, raising kids alone in the woods after being disowned by "mother", and a prince getting blinded.

I can't understand Pinocchio x Alice pairing...AT...ALL. Especially Pinocchio as a puppet rather than real boy.

The most canon pairing it can get involving Pinocchio, is Pinocchio x Gepetto. Cause you know it's obviously true.
