I am appalled that Mad Madam Mim and the Wizards Duel sequence has been missed off the cover art for The Sword In The Stone !!

I've always had a soft spot for this movie . The Sword In The Stone may not be the best thing Disney did - but it has a great comic villainess in Mad Madam Mim couple of great moments: the really marvellous Wizard's Duel sequence , the Higitus Figitus song and without a doubt Mad Madam Mim should definitely be on the cover along with Merlin and Wart - at the side of her Kay and Wart's Father are mere pawns!!

The latest version of cover is way better looking than the first. It's beautiful. But I don't care for it depicting the sword being free from the stone therefore contrasting with the movie title and giving away who pulled the sword out. They had the right idea showing Arthur touching the handle of the sword (which was firmly planted in the stone) in the first version, why did they have to drop it? Also, I agree Madam Mim should have a place on the cover.

I agree the sword should still be in the stone, not only because it might spoil the ending but also because the pedestal looks ugly without it.

Overall, I kind of liked the original cover better, but this one's still good. And it really shouldn't have Mim on the cover, anymore than the squirrels and the killer fish should be. She's not really a part of the overlying story, merely integral in one episode.

Actually I agree. Mad Madam Mim was a great, pleasant surprise on my first viewing. I wasn't expecting that portion of the movie at all, and it really was the highlight of the movie. They should keep it as a hidden gem :)

MUCH better :D this is great but where's Madam Mim? she was great.
Also it looks kinda.. empty, maybe because the characters seems too small.

I guess we can add those two (SB and SITS) to the list of DVD covers that spoil the ending by showcasing an iconic moment or image (like Planet of the Apes, The Wicker Man, Carrie, etc.)
Hm, well, you're right in saying it could spoil it somewhat, but the difference is there's trying for the sword or the kiss and then succeeding in getting the sword or the kiss.

I don't think Carrie's spoils the ending, just an iconic moment. But that's okay. I mean, that bloody prom IS Carrie. It doesn't show what really happens in the end (can you picture her mom up on the wall for the cover?). Unless I haven't seen the right cover, am I correct it's only her standing covered in blood?

Yea Planet of the Apes with Miss Liberty is a real bone-headed move. I'm sure it got lots of complaints (and why didn't the fans get it changed?).

I'm so happy with this final change of the cover. I think it's a great improvement over the earlier one. Even though like others have said it sort of spoils the ending with the sword pulled, I like the way Arthur is drawn in this much better.

I don't think it's spoiling,it is expected, not too much expected like Aurora wake up but expected (don't forget that ALL the covers for this movie had him pulling the sword).

No, I even checked, and every cover before this has only had him holding onto the sword. We are complaining about how he has pulled the sword out and on this cover, revealing that he will become king.

Yeah, that's what I mean,he's holding it and well,it's kinda expected that it will come out.
I see your point but don't you think it's expected?.

Yes, it is expected, but still... It's like showing Cinderella and the Prince getting married on the cover art of a DVD. I mean, god forbid "The Crying Game" ever get a DVD cover like this.

I kinda agree that Wart pulling out the sword is giving away the ending, but in away its not. Mad Madem Mim needs to be on the cover along with maybe one of the squriles aswell.

I found this image of "The Sword in the Stone" cover art - where we can see the spine. Strangely enough, Wart is not featured on the spine, it is Merlin instead. Normally, I prefer to see the protagonist on the spine, but Merlin being on the spine for this one doesn't really bother me. I really hate that Lumiere is on the spine for the Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition. Even though he is my favorite character, Belle should definitely be on the spine.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on Merlin earning the spine slot?

Merlin on the spine is fine with me. The only thing I don't like about the cover besides there being space around the bottom of the anvil, is that it says Walt Disney, and should read Walt Disney's instead.

I agree with you, but I don't think we'll be seeing another Walt-era film labelled Walt Disney's any time soon. Walt Disney Home Entertainment seem to have dropped it. :(

Why drop the 's?, all of the Disney films per 1970, where all Walt Disney's, the only expection being Bedknob's And Broomsticks, but back to the point, why are they being lazy by not adding the 's? it's not like an 's is going to cost more?

The public's all but forgotten Walt was a real man, not just a name for the Disney Company. Not to metion (considering some of the pop culture references) it's almost surprising it's a Walt Era film

It kind of made sense to drop the 's on The Aristocats, as it was the first film released without Walt (I still don't like it though), but it seems odd on Sleeping Beauty and The Sword in the Stone, both Walt-era films.

It really does just seem as if they are playing up the name as represetative of the company, or the label, and not the man. It seems to stem from the same cause that has resulted in the lacklustre single-disc DVD releases of late. Simply put, Walt Disney = Money - it doesn't need an 's.

the apostophe s is important to the all of the pre 1967 Disney films, because Walt Disney over saw each and every single one of the projects, so it should read Walt Disney's. After Walt passed away, it was changed to Walt Disney Pictures Presents, so I don't know why the "now" Disney Company wants to leave things off.

I hope they get rid of those little gold things at the top and bottom of the spine... Just from a uniformity of my collection standpoint, they give it a "Gold Collection" feel.

The Fantasia spine really irritates me too (Disney DVD on the bottom rather than the top like all the others)

Anyway, just me being picky... I really like this cover now though !

And as far as the cover being a spoiler... I think it's pretty safe to bet every one knows the story of King Arthur by now.

I mean... If this were an original story it would be different.

But I'd say most people who know the story of The Sword And The Stone know how it ends and those who don't probably would never catch on that him holding the sword in the air means that he is king, until after they have watched the film, upon which the cover spoiling the ending would no longer really matter lol.
