Ive seen the original hairspray, I have the dvd, it was ok, but-

Im sorry, I just don't get how it is better? The musical has great songs+great laughs+a great cast.
Since when are we supposed to "feel" for her? You're supposed to cheer her on and root for her! She's not some tragic character, she's a take charge kinda gal.
The Wig Bomb scene alone kicks the musical's ass. Original Velma played amazingly by Deboarh Harry > Musical Velma played lacklusterly and corpse like by Michelle Pffeifer.
The musical was lackluster at best, way too happy, the songs gave me a headache and was NOT FUNNY AT ALL. It was pathetic. The only time I laughed was during the Black parade thing which was beyond overdramatic w/Queen Latifah crying

. Also I could care less about this new cast, the original will always be the only one.
It boggles my mind how anyone could like it.
perhaps it is a generation thing, but I know I found the new hairspray a lot funnier than its counterpart, I enjoyed the cast, and I'm still singing the songs at this stage. The march- well I guess they felt it needed to be in there, but Im indifferent about it.
The only thing I feel the two movies are on the same level about, are the actresses playing prudy, whom I felt were both great.
The musical film...just seems to flow better to me.

no doubt you will disagree

Wahoo! my Hairspray BD came today!
It appears to be the same as New Line's US BD featurewise (but for some reason the EiV release only has 2 DTS HD tracks - English 5.1 and English 2.0) A DTS HD 2.0 track is perplexing but I believe the US disc as a LPCM 7.1 track. Update it does have a 7.1 track; the only track - the casing it wrong.
I'm pleased it has the Behind the Beat picture-in-picture feature, but like many HD DVD PiP features, its not that good. It doesn't flow freely or have any structure. Still, PiP is still "new" and it takes time for editors and content producers to learn how to use it properly - and when it does, it can be incredibly good.
I've not had time to look at the other stuff yet on the 1st disc, let alone put the second disc in. However it looks like EiV have done something right for once (their UK The Crow BD is appalling!)

Does that mean the Wal Mart bonus disc only comes with the 1 disc DVD?

i'm pretty sure, which is a total shame because the fans that actually will buy the most expensive DVD will not get to see those features.
and the title is sparkly, its official: 100 times better cover art than the 2-disc shake and shimmy edition

That's so unfair if Wal-mart only issues the bonus disc with the 1 disc DVD! If someone buys a single edition when there is a 2-disc edition available what makes Wal-mart think that they want a bonus disc to begin with?! Especially if it's only attached to the Fullscreen version! Bad marketing decision.

exactly!!!
but the exclusive DVD also comes with the widescreen DVD

They only had a picture of the foolscreen edition online so that's the only reason why I used it......jrboy

i got my copy!!!
not exactly as loaded with extras... i actually watched them all in a row,
but its definately better than most DVDs released nowadays.
the only thing i haven't seen are the documentaries, which i'm really looking forward to.
by the way, it turns out to be a rebersible slip cover,
i never understood the reviews
i also very much recommend the special edition soundtrack... karaoke can't get any funner than hairspray

That was my thought too. A bit of a let down.

That reversible slipcover is so tacky! I hate it. It went straight into the garbage.

from reading the comments here, I think I'll just be renting this dvd.
But did y'all watch The American Music Awards? I can't believe HSM won over Hairspray.

i can...its repulsive though; don't get me wrong i love HSM but in a DCOM way, but hairspray is just practically perfect in every way!!!
american audiences are kind of stupid most of the time.
by the way the DVD is worth owning

"Not exactly loaded with extras?"
What?
* Two Commentary Tracks
* Deleted/Extended Scenes (with optional Commentary) including a missing song.
* Hairspray Extensions - behind the scenes look at the song numbers plus the full song of each.
* Step by Step: The Dances of Hairspray - admittedly useless for klutzes like me, but it's there none the less.
* Jump to a Song/Kareoke subtitles
* The Roots of Hairspray - previous incarnations of Hairspray which is utterly facinating and would make the disc fantastic, even if this was the only supplement on the set.
* You Can't Stop The Beat: The Long Story of Hairspray - a comprehensive look at the making of the film which isn't a glorified Electronic Press Kit , and covers almost everything and explains several filmmakers' decisions I found perplexing at the time (and frankly, still do for most of them, but at least now I know why the filmmakers thought like they did).
* The Theatrical Trailer: all I can say is "WAHOOOOO!"
And on the Blu-ray you get a Picture-in-Picture track consisting of bits from the two commentaries plus additional behind the scenes stuff. On the DVD I understand you get some DVD-Rom stuff.
By my quick and not-accurate at all reckoning I make that... [counts on fingers] seven to seven and a half hours of extras (not counting the Blu-ray PiP track)... most of which are "non-fluff". I don't really know what people expect, but Hairspray is up there as one of the top ten DVDs of the year in my book. It has both quantity
and quality in it's supplements.

I really want to pick this up but it's going to have to wait until after Christmas, oh well at least it will be cheaper by then (unless I get as a present).

My dad got home from Seattle today and picked it up for me right before he went to the airport. I am soooo happy and can't wait to watch it.
I think there's a lot of bonus stuff on there and the Making-of is about 70 minutes long which is amazing.

i just espected more bonus features, but the extras are plenty.
my favorite was probably "The Roots of HAIRSPRAY", and the documentary with Nikki was fun.
i wanted Nikki's audition process to be on the DVD
and spanish dubs, at least for the dialogues
