It's too bad that some people have mixed/critical feelings on the songs by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. At least the ones revealed so far, because I personally really, really liked what I heard on all three songs in one way or another. But I guess it really depends on the persons taste in music, which I've never been closed off to any genre or any style of songwriting, which is probably why I really liked the soundtracks to both
Moana and
Encanto from the first listen without any quibbles to mention.
Would I have loved for Alan Menken to return for at least one last WDAS film to write the score and songs for? Absolutely. But I love the idea of the studio looking for fresh new talent to write music/songs for the studio's upcoming animated musicals. Honestly, what Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice have shown so far for
Wish, I am very impressed that I would like to see them team up again for another WDAS musical.
On that topic, it seems Disney has decided to go with “This Wish (More For Us)” as the song from Wish to submit as a nominee for Best Original Song at the Oscars, which makes sense as it is the most viral of the 3 that really worked in a way so far, at least on TikTok:

Personally, I think the songs are okay? I know things are so stark online, you must hate something if you think it's anything less than an A+, but criticism doesn't mean you hate something. Can't speak for the others, of course, but I do passingly like all three songs to some degree and plan to buy the soundtrack just like I did with Moana and Encanto. Since this film's music is more in the vein of those two films, they're the best comparison. I'd say "This Is the Thanks I Get?" (the best of the three we've heard) is *much* better than "You're Welcome"; "Welcome to Rosas" is a little better than "The Family Madrigal" but about even with "Where You Are"; and "This Wish" is about the same level as "Waiting on a Miracle" but behind "How Far I'll Go." I don't hear anything as good as "We Don't Talk About Bruno" so far though, which admittedly was an outlier even for LMM, or "Surface Pressure" for that matter, but we'll see. Thankfully nothing as bad as "Scuttlebutt" either though.
I do prefer the Lopezes' music to this though, they would've been a better choice for the 100th anniversary. I think Pasek & Paul would've been better, too, if we were going to get pop-lite music anyway ("Million Dreams," "Never Enough," "This Is Me," "Speechless," etc.).

Trust me, I'm not one of those "Oh you gave something a lower grade than what was deserved you must hate it" kind of people, I can understand where the criticism is coming from. After all, I did say once that these songs sound like it won't be everyone's cup of tea, and honestly that's okay with me.

Castilian Spanish version of This Wish

I wonder if the lyrics is less awkward and wordy than the English version?

Here is the French version of "this wish" with English subtitles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-l22V2 ... nnel=toto5
I may be biased because I'm a French speaker but I feel like it's way better than the English version. The words just flow better. In the original, I hate the part :"Now I've got all of this freedom in my bones but I've still got the lid on, so it doesn't overflow" maybe becausse I'm not a native English speaker but it sounds weird to use the word "lid" in a Disney song. It makes me think of Tupperware!
In French, she says :
"But here I am, thirsting for freedom and suffering from this condition as(if I were) in a prison." which again sounds way better.

Here are also the
German and
Italian versions of "This Wish."
To me they're worse in Spanish, but some parts are better translated than others. Interestingly, instead of "So I make this wish to have something more than this," here the chorus is "My wish is to give our dreams their power." By the way, apparently, this is not the version that will be in the film in the dub for Spain, as this singer has only recorded this song and the end credits one, which is performed by Julia Michaels domestically. In an
interview, she says the end credits song is a bit quieter than "This Wish," very emotional and will give you goosebumps.
And in this other
interview, we can see a couple of new
Wish posters in the background.

The spain version sounds better and has a flamenco sound in the voice
I wanted Nia Correia as the spanish dub, she's half black and she's fully North african, from the Canary Islands, born and raised, her mother is canarian and they are indigenous amazigh (like Asha)
Made much more sense
Edit: I forgot that Ana Guerra is canarian and so she's guanche aka Amazigh like Asha too

Well, Ana Guerra will only perform the end credit song and a version of "This Wish;" we still don't know who will voice Asha in the dub for Spain. It might still be the one you wanted.

I don't hate the new music, and I actually quite enjoy "This is the Thanks I Get," but I don't think that Michaels and Rice serve what I value in a musical soundtrack. The lyrics skip over "universal" and slide more into "generic" to me. Like "This Wish" doesn't read like a tribute to or evolution of past "I Want" songs so much as a homogenized smoothie of them. "Welcome To Rosas" feels purely expository where "Circle of Life," "Belle," "Some Things Never Change," or "Where You Are" did a better job at also introducing themes or conflicts. There's a chance I'll enjoy the numbers more when paired with the animation and whatnot, and if even one more song matches "This is the Thanks I Get," then this movie will have offered me two new Disney jams that I unambiguously like, which is an ample serving.
I do think that Alan Menken is always in season, but it's especially weird to me that they didn't bring him back for their centennial film. Surely there is no one more qualified to write the ultimate Disney soundtrack.
What I actually think would have been especially neat for this specific film would have been to enlist all the major songwriters who've written for Disney for Disney (Menken, Pasek & Paul, Miranda, the Lopezes, etc), each team writing a different number. Could there have been a better tribute to Disney animation than a soundtrack with contributions from anyone who's written for Disney over the last fifteenish years? (I might even allow them to bring back Newman, whose contributions I didn't really care for.) Yeah, the logistics of rounding them all up for one creative project probably would have been a nightmare, and then you have the politics of "Whose song gets to be our Oscar song?" But ... I still can't let the idea go.

I mean Alan Menken was working on the music for the live-action Little Mermaid at the time with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Pasek and Paul were doing the new songs for Snow White. The Lopezes were and probably still are brainstorming ideas for Frozen 3. And Randy Newman was and now probably still is working on new music and songs for Toy Story 5. And I'm not sure if Phil Collins was doing his own thing and isn't interested in working with Disney right now. So I feel like Disney had to think outside the box and go with Julia Michaels & Benjamin Rice.

Judging by all the songs released so far and preview of the other one, I think What we know Now is probably my favorite. The lyrics seems to flow well and her voice is not over powering like in This Wish. The drums playing in the background makes the song very catchy and fun to listen to.

"Knowing What I Know Now" will be released on the 15th, while the song released this week will be "I'm a Star", which was supposedly said to be a really fun and memorable song.

I’m getting a feeling of “When Will My Life Begin” from Tangled in the instrumental presentation of this song.
