Yes, I feel the same. Ariel and Vanessa don't look like twins, but they both have similar hairstyles, similar body types,
big eyes...(Not that Ursula necessarily chose her eye shape; that's just the film/Disney's style!)
Personally, I never saw Vanessa as an evil version of Ariel either, but I agree that there are some similarities between the two. In my opinion, Ursula transformed into someone that could pass for the girl who had saved Eric to the people he could've described her to, but not too similar to not make Ariel and her friends suspect she was cheating or the rest think she was Ariel's twin.

Just for the record, while I did call Vanessa a dark version of Ariel, I just wanted to be clear that I don’t think they look exactly alike either. I know there are surface differences, mostly making Vanessa sharper than Ariel, and the eyes in particular are different (depending on the shot—they look more like Ursula’s when they do close-ups on her thought process than when she’s just standing back smiling and playing the part). I also think Vanessa’s moment with Max on the boat at the end sort of mirrors his first meeting with Ariel somewhat, as far as Max in both scenes seeing something the humans don't. He sees Ariel and licks her face versus him seeing Vanessa as fake and Ursula kicking him in the face.

Yes, I agree that she looks more similar to Ariel when she's smiling. And especially when she's shown in profile because the shape of her forehead and nasal bridge is quite similar to Ariel's.

However, in shots like this one, the differences are more noticeable (Vanessa's face is longer, her eyes and lips have a different shape and the hairstyle is not the same):

It's also interesting that the color of her eyes is purple, which is one of Ursula's colors, so I guess that's a clue that she's the sea witch. In this shot it can be seen quite well.

It could be. I love that she can't fool Max. In real life dogs also have a sixth sense for things like that.

AAAAAAAAA

I just discovered Abigail Cowen and now I'm mad Disney didn't cast her as Ariel when she literally looks, acts, and sounds like Ariel.

also would still have preferred Mark Hamill as Triton and Kathleen Turner as Ursula.

Keep Daveed Diggs as Sebastian tho. Perfect casting there.

She kind of looks the part, though her face is rather rounder than the Vanessa's in the original. It is good she is closer in age to the leads, too. But once again, it's a white girl stealing Eric away for a while. I guess it might look even worse if white Ursula transformed into a black woman.

I can't believe filming hasn't even started yet! And how will they do the warm weather beach and Eric's kingdom scenes? If they go on location, can they find warm and sunny enough places in November/December?

The character may prove to be a foil for Ariel, but I’m still not sure she will be the “Vanessa” we know from the 1989 film.

What with her being younger than Kacey (who seemed more or less exactly like the cartoon) they may go with an idea of her being more of a mirror image/foil whatever it's called of Ariel herself as opposed to the 'villain,' being that she's more like the same age...

I can't wait for this film. This is the only remake I've been waiting for (longer than the Disney remakes have been around). Back then I was dreaming for Lindsay Lohan as Ariel and Megan Fox as Vanessa. This was when Lindsay was at the peak of her career.
I am beyond excited about this project, not only because of the songs and the story but also to see what the underwater setting will be like in a live action film. We barely get to see it in movies like Splash or any other mermaid related film and as I refuse to watch Aquaman because of Amber Heard's involvement in it, I am even more impatient to watch this.

This is my version of Halle Bailey as Ariel.. :D

Omg, Abagail Cowan does look EXACTLY right for Ariel though. My guess is they are doing something very different for the role of Ariel this time around....

And Kathleen could have rocked as Ursula. Very theatrical.

You drew Halle very well in cartoon form Redadoodles! She is very cute and pretty! But what is wrong with Amber Heard? I don't know much about her.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

What's wrong with Amber Heard ? Goodness, I don't even know where to start but to sum it up quickly. She destroyed Johnny Depp's career and mental health. She beat him up and harassed him and did everything she could to destroy him in the public eye as well as taking his fortune. She lied about being a victim abuse when she was herself the abuser.

Holy crap, she's beautiful. :o :o :o

I'm also very much looking forward to this one. :) I keep wondering, will they show us some footage of Ariel's mother, like they did in Ariel's Beginning? And if so, will they keep the same storyline?

Ohhh...that's who Amber Heard is...I did hear of all that. Yeah, she's bad.
