I'm hearing good news about this movie! Doesn't hold enough interest for me to see it (ugh, the frog character looks terrible) in theaters, but I'll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD. That song that Nelly Furtado? (sp_ and Elton John sing called "Crocodile Rock" is stuck in my head from Disney Channel (at least, the la la las). I'm confused as to why Disney gave it to Touchstone however. Is this movie rated G or PG?

Seems like a flop, no surprises there.

The film is rated G and the frog character, Nanette, is much more awesome than she seems, and the character Featherstone (played by amazing Jim Cummings) has one of the saddest stories in the film, I even made him Fan Art I'd recommend seeing it in theaters myself, though not in 3D as it doesn't really add anything to the film And yes Crocodile Rock is catchy, and just the end of the film dance song

I really do not know about this movie. Overall, the concept IMO seems kind of silly. I mean, garden gnomes? And to add in something else, hasn't Romeo and Juliet been adapted to death?

It's true that the critics didn't like the film, but the film has a 74% audience favorability rating on RT.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. It's no cinematic masterpiece (which is what I would expect if there was a high critic rating) but I had a fun time at the movies, and it seems (from the audience rating) a number of other folks did too.

Well, if you're going to look at it that way, any love story against all odds (whether or not it ends badly) could be attributed to Romeo and Juliet (which, in itself, was most likely derived from Ovid's Pyramus and Thisbe).

But, yes, I get your point. Romeo and Juliet stands (along with <i>A Christmas Carol</i>) as one of the most overdone things out there.

Out of curiosity...have you actually seen the movie, or are you just judging based on trailers?

Well, there aren't any other family films in the marketplace, what with Yogi Bear and Tangled having left a good number of screens by now.

It should hold up pretty decently, too, since there's no family film until Rango comes out in the beginning of March. And that is surprisingly not being released in 3-D.

I took my Girlfriend too it....I thought it was pretty good....although I thought some of the voice cast during the credits....was quite a wild card....Dolly Parton, Hulk Hogan, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John.....wow...now that's variety for ya

Elton John has blasted Disney for not backing Gnomeo and Juliet to the hilt -- and then not ringing with congratulations after the animated movie became a box office winner.

“We fought resistance from the (Disney) studio for so long, and to be honest with you, the film has taken $75 million in America, and we haven’t had a message of congratulations from anyone within the studio,” the British singer let rip on the CTV daytime talker The Marilyn Dennis Show Tuesday (on Sunday, John went out of his way to thank the Disney guests at his Oscar viewing party).

“Gnomeo and Juliet took us eleven years to make. We defied all the odds and all of the people at Disney who said, “this wouldn’t be a hit,” John said on air with one of his legendary outbursts. “And it’s the biggest hit, but it could have been a bigger hit if Disney got behind it more,” he added.

Miramax financed the picture, which was animated at the Starz Animation studio in Toronto. John said Disney is red-faced over Gnomeo overcoming the odds to succeed at the multiplex. “They’re so ashamed, and they should be ashamed of themselves –they’re so afraid to congratulate us because John Lasseter of Pixar did not want us to make this movie that we still haven’t had a message of congratulations or well done,” he added.

Lee Unkrich actually congratulated Kelly Asbury on his Twitter on the success of Gnomeo and Juliet. Maybe Disney is phoning Asbury instead, because, oh I don't know, he's the director.

I loved Gnomeo And Juliet. Here's a short review.


As usually happens with any animated movie these days that isn’t Pixar, Gnomeo and Juliet has had mainly average reviews but the audience I saw it with, full of kids and adults, loved it and rightly so, this is a terrific audience pleaser, terrific fun from beginning to end. Of course the story of Romeo and Juliet has had countless cinematic telling and has been adapted in many ways, so perhaps we don’t need another version, but it was a stroke of eccentric genius to use garden gnomes this time [I can only one think of one other gnome film,the animated The Gnome Mobile.] The basic story is there, and the writers cleverly have it both ways by having Shakespeare tell the proper ending [you’ll see what I mean] and giving us the happy ending films like this require to send the audience out smiling. Complaints by purists are ridiculous and narrow minded-this is a perfect way to introduce young kids to the Bard. This is filled with funny scenes, and I personally haven’t laughed so much at a new film in ages, though at times it’s more like a Dreamworks film, despite Disney partly producing, with lots of pop culture references and gags aimed at adults. Now the critics don’t like this kind of thing, but sod them, I thought they all worked in this movie except maybe for a Matrix bullet time bit, which has been seen in too many films. Despite all the irreverence, the central romance is sweet and gives proceedings an emotional centre- I cared far more about it then the romance in Tangled. Technically this is superb, with the gnomes looking and sounding like actual solid garden gnomes, and although I don’t especially like Elton John, his songs do work in the picture and are cleverly adapted into the score. There’s a flashback which copies Toy Story 2 but isn’t nearly as poignant, and I didn’t think enough was done with the Ozzy Osbourne-voiced Fawn-I kind of expected more Donkey from Shrek-though overall the voice cast were great. I don’t care what anyone says, I enjoyed this more than any other of this year’s films so far, and I doubt there’ll be a better animated movie for quite a while.
