Thanks, Sotiris! It's a shame that the last track, the original song by Janelle Monáe for the movie, is only available if you buy the soundtrack.
Sotiris wrote:A bit disappointed they didn't record full versions of What Is a Baby, La La Lu, and He's a Tramp for the end credits. I don't really like Peace on Earth so I would have preferred any other song in its place. A pop rendition of Bella Notte seems like a no-brainer for the end credits. Odd they didn't go for it.
I also thought there would be an end-credits version of "Bella Notte". And I expected Janelle to sing more songs in the movie, probably because I thought she would do what Peggy Lee did in the original.
Sotiris wrote:I'm pleasantly surprised by Janelle's version of He's a Tramp. Although it differs from the original, it still feels suitable for the era. Her new song That's Enough is nice too. It's similar in sound to He's a Tramp. What a Shame is OK. Not as catchy as The Siamese Cat Song obviously but not bad either. I was expecting much worse from the descriptions.
Me too, in my opinion Janelle's version of "He's a Tramp" is the best of the new versions. I agree with you about "What a Shame", it's not as bad as I expected either. The rest of the songs, though not bad, are a bit too similar to the originals. However, I really like the new version of "Peace on Earth" by Kiersey Clemons too.

I'm glad to hear people like the movie and that it is charming!

Hey, random, but I always thought the original siamese cats were boys. Also, wasn't the original baby a boy and this remake they made it a girl?

I watched the remake today and really liked it. I consider this to be one of the better Disney remakes. "Lady and the Tramp" is one of my favourite Disney animated films, so I should have logically been comparing the live-action version to it and yet, I never did. The film managed to tell the story in its own way and I liked many of the changes to the narrative. Expanding Darling and Jim Dear worked extremely well and I liked seeing their relationship. Obviously, the way the white people and black people interacted is inaccurate to the time period and there would certainly be resistance to their marriage. But I also don't watch Disney talking dog movies to get a historically accurate portrait of America.

The effects to make the dogs talk looked a tad on the dodgy side, but I did get used to it after a while. Most importantly, I liked the chemistry between Lady and Tramp and the filmmakers crafted a lot of sweet scenes between the two. The humour in the movie also won me over, especially one gag involving a bunch of birds. I also loved when Darling and Jim Dear told off Aunt Sarah. Watching the animated film, I often wonder if they ever did that off-screen, so it was great to see that depicted here.

The characterization of the dog catcher was also interesting. Through most of it, he's presented as more of an obstacle than an outright villain. He's just doing his job, after all, and it's understandable why he would be concerned about Tramp wandering the streets. It's a bit of a shame the script portrayed him as more of a stereotypical dog-hating villain in the very last scene, when he's dragging Tramp away. I would definitely rank this as the second best of the Disney remakes (with Cinderella being my personal favourite of the bunch).

I just watched it... and it might be the best live action adaptation of the animated classics.

I should preface this by saying the original LATT has never been a favorite of mine. I have great respect for it, and I dont have a single thing to critique about it. It's just a film that never hit me on a personal level.

A lot of the changes made to the new version were good. Though I did miss some of the more memorable bits... like Trusty being stuck under the wheel near the end... or the subplot (which I didn't notice till I was an adult) about Lady getting pregnant and Jock and Trusty coming to offer to marry her to save her from humiliation, which I feel was super interesting. But this new film works extremely well without them.

My main gripe w the new one: the ridiculous level of diversity. a) inter-racial couple? In the South... in 1910? Really? Why not just make it a black couple? I would have bought that! b) the supporting cast... the doctor is Asian, the man at the pet store is Indian, the dog catcher is Latin... c'mon. Really? Again... the South in 1910. If you want to add some diversity, ok. But this felt like tokenism. Even the human couple at Tony's was interracial.

Note: the setting of the original film is based on Walt Disney's childhood in Missouri. Seems like this one was too, though it was filmed in Georgia it seems.

Really cool reading your thoughts guys on this film. I am glad to read all of it, especially that their is good chemistry between both main couples, good humor, and that they tell Aunt Sarah off. I'm glad I'm not the only one bugged by the CGI though, lol. Or the tokenism that Disney puts in everything now.

Disney submitted only one song from the movie for this year's Primetime Emmys. I'm surprised the other original song "What a Shame" wasn't submitted too, especially since it got more attention in the press.

I'm surprised this film still hasn't been released on DVD or Blu-ray. I know they want Disney+ incentives, but the movie's old at this point.

This is one thing I worry about, that a lot of streaming exclusive things never get released physically. I mean, I did see Good Omens on Amazon recently, which surprised me, and I might pick it up soon just to watch it. But it seems really random what gets released and what doesn't. I'd really like to see the Hillary docuseries on hulu, for example, and I have no idea why they wouldn't release it physically at some point? I'm also hoping the Howard Ashman documentary gets released eventually.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I just wanted to confirm that I saw the film the other day. And I thought it was good enough. Whether it should be compared to it`s animated predecessor, is irrelevant, but the movie was cute and fine enough. The animals moving their mouth were distracting, it didn`t ruin the film completely. Otherwise, the film followed the original storyline quite faithfully and didn`t changed it too much. The change of Siamese Cat Song was notable, but not distracting. What was distracting, though, was the performance of He`s a Tramp, which felt too anacronistic. I liked that Lady was more proactive in the climax (though all kinds of feminism are mandatory, nowadays. No offence to women, though). Otherwise, it was a cute film. Not unforgettable, but fine enough.
