It featured five original songs like most of Disney's musicals. I wouldn't call that barely having songs. And no movie "requires" songs. It's an optional creative approach like any other. Any story, regardless of subject matter or tone can become a musical. The history of musical theater has long proven that.
I was comparing Mulan to the rest of the 90s musicals which actually were musicals. They have songs spread out throughout the film and they each have way more than 5 songs, especially with reprises and chorus finales. Mulan has four songs. I don't count True to Your Heart because that's basically an end-credits pop song. Four songs does not equate a musical to me. I think even Coco has more songs and that isn't considered a musical. Mulan's songs end 2/3 of the way in the film, which might also be true for a film like Frozen, but that has way more songs and no one would doubt that it is a musical.

The animated film is a mishmash of many genres. I do consider it a musical and it was intended as one. It's too bad they have no intention of re-creating the animated film, because otherwise I'd hope "Keep 'Em Guessing" might have been reinstated along with "Written in Stone." I believe they ultimately decided not to give Mushu a song after Murphy was cast? Of course some of the lyrics would need work, but I always liked the demo for that song. *shrug* I thought it sounded like a strange love-child of "Friend Like Me" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls."

Back in 2012 when Guillermo Del Toro was attached to Beauty and the Beast, I was excited. The end result after he left was disappointing. I wanted a fresh take on it.
And here, I LOVE Mulan...and I want them to do what they did with Beauty and the Beast and recreate an exact beat-by-beat live action film to the animated version!
Everything seems to go in the opposite direction I want them to.

A production budget of $300 million is much higher than any of their other live-action remakes. They must be counting on the Chinese box office to bring in the big bucks.
It looks like fans can rest assured that there won’t be any more delay in production of Disney’s live-action reboot of Mulan. Preparations for the movie’s production in New Zealand this August seems to be going according to the plan. Sources close to Pursue News have confirmed that the project is well underway with its preproduction in New Zealand. Furthermore, we have learnt that Disney has set aside a budget of $290 million plus for Mulan.
Sources tell us that the sets will be massive and are of an unprecedented scale. Currently, it is in the design stage and would require an ample of time to be built. The crew working on the construction of the set is the same crew that worked on Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok for building the Asgard sets. From what fans got to see in Behind-the-scenes video from Thor: Ragnarok set, it will certainly be an aesthetic set to delve at when the crew completes its construction for August filming.

I'm thinking a movie like this probably needs a lot more actual set locations. They can't as easily get by with CG and background extensions like beauty and the beast or jungle book.

Yeah, I'm not surprised by its budget. Outdoor locations, lots of CGI I'd guess (for the Witch's magic), action sequences, etc.

I figured it was a rumour, especially since the movie hasn't even started filming yet and is still in the pre-production/casting phase. Plus Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book and Maleficent cost in the $160-180 million range (Pete's Dragon and Cinderella are the "low budget" Disney redos with $65 million and $95 million budgets, respectively), so it makes a lot more sense for Mulan to be around that price bracket.

More casting news and more new characters.
Utkarsh Ambudkar (The Mindy Project, Pitch Perfect) and Ron Yuan (Netflix’s Marco Polo) have come aboard the Niki Caro-directed live-action adaptation of Disney’s Mulan, which has Chinese actress Liu Yifei set to play the title role. Ambudkar will play Skath, a con artist, while Yuan is the fiercely loyal Sergeant Qiang, second in command of the Imperial Regiment.

^Utkarsh Ambudkar is from Indian descent, isn't he? Were there Indian people in China at that time?
Update: I looked it up and it seems
there were.

I actually know someone who was cast in this. The person told me an 8-week rehearsal starts in June in New Zealand, then they will film for 2 weeks in China, and then return to New Zealand to film the rest. The movie will not be a musical. Instead, it will be like an action epic. Also, there's no Li Shang. Those are all the details I have, but everything is subject to change.

Thanks for the info! Personally I'm glad this film won't be a musical since I don't consider the original to be one either. Plus Mulan has the weakest music out of the entire Renaissance.

I feel like the same discussion about this being a musical or not has been had 5 or 6 times. *rehashes same opinions from one page ago*
