So I haven't really been paying attention lately, but is it official that only the Blu-ray will be labeled as "Diamond Edition?"

How nice to see a really detailed High Rsolution version of the covers what a pity they're not for the English language version , but at least we can see more of the Wicked Queen's costume which looks better in close up. I still hate the Witch drawing , not a good image at all!

the whole cover is a mess. snow white still looks nothing like snow white, and the queen... looks horrible. let's hope that the next couple diamond editions/platinum editions covers aren't this awful.

I still don't know if this will be the final Cover Art image - who knows?

However I agree with nomad2010 that overall it isn't a good cover at all Snow White the eponymous heroine's image is nowhere as good as the first Platinum Edition cover art version back in 2001. The Wicked Queen looks better in this than she does in the original version of the October 6th 2009 artwork.

Deco King, don't you think the queen really looks more like herself in the first one, and Snow White looks better in this first one, too? At least their faces?!

But Iceflash, Disney themselves said things like "Cinderella was re-released for the first time on DVD in October, 2005. Fully restored, the film shines even brighter than the original." and also that the restoration went "beyond the original brilliance" saying it looked "better than it premiered", but we want the original, the original!

But where did you see your evidence? I got mine from people that worked for the company, video expert's reviews, and people who went to the El Capitan. What about you?

Disney has told outright lies or bent the truth numerous times in their advertising before. I don't think anything Disney marketing comes up with should be taken as gospel at all.

Exactly. And what they really mean when they say "better than it premiered" is that it wasn't digital then, so there would be some artifacts on the film print that didn't belong there. I recently met Les Perkins, who makes a lot of bonus features for Disney and is often brought in for opinions on restorations. He said that it is "impossible" to get these films restored to the exact colors, but what they end up with is as close as anybody has seen since that time. He was only referring to classic films, not more recent films that were botched like Beauty and the Beast. But he did cite Cinderella as an example of a film that they restored as close to the original colors as possible. He said they use many sources, not just one or two.

Snow White allready has different collecters items that you can get depending on what Blu-ray copy you order. I am curious if there will also be collecters items exclusive to some stores that will sell Snow White on Blu-ray and/or Dvd.

I hope for my sake there's a collector's item available with the DVD only release.

Very unfortunately for me, I do remember Disney saying somewhere that they made Cinderella look better than the day it premiered, that they went beyond the way it originally looked, but I do not remember where.

BUT, in Sleeping Beauty's restoration bonus feature they said they made it look beter than the day it premiere...in terms of color.

It shows that they do indeed go beyond how it originally looked, colors and all, because they think it's "better".

They might have some collector's item for the Dvd only release. The Disney store might have something.

No it doesn't because Disney marketing often use deliberately degraded "original" footage and made-up "restored" footage when comparing original to restored on thier DVD trailers. They often boast "for the first time ever on [special edition] DVD" (obviously wording designed to mislead), they class TV episodes they edit together as "original movies" etc. Why would anyone chose to believe one marketing tag-line when so many others they use can be shown to be at best misleading, at worst lies?

Re: Sleeping Beauty. This was from the 2002[?] 2 disc special edition release? What it says it the restoration could bring out colours better than 1950s film technology could process (or similar). Which is probably true. It doesn't mean the colours were changed.

Remember each film reel sent out to cinemas in the 1950's was a copy - most likely a third of fourth generation copy. It would be too risky to strike hundreds of copies from the original negative in case it got damaged. So I think its safe to say they were analogue copies of a second negative created from the original. As I say, probably they were copied from negatives even more removed from the original negative.

And again, I'll just point out, copying a film from a negative in those days wasn't just "press a button and its done". It was still done with chemicals, film exposure, and manual assistance during the development. Making a direct one to one copy would have been very, very, very hard, due to all the variables involved in the process.

Add to this analogue copies are lossy. Detail degrades with each copy. It's a fact of life. The more generations from the original, the less like the original an analogue copy will be. So yes, I'm sure the original colours even on the original theatrical release would have been compromised - just by that very process. Meanwhile, in the 1990s Disney created a Digital Copy of Sleeping Beauty which could be made into a Digital Negative and from that a first generation copy could be made to film. If they needed to make more film reels, they could do so from the same digital negative. The digital film could be copied, backed up and stored off-site without losing any detail. So yes, its perfectly possible what they say is true, without [purposely] changing any colours.

As they say, its a matter of technology improving, not the fact the film was recoloured. It could explain the thinking about the Cinderella statement too - but I suspect that was just Disney Marketing Hype.

As far as I know, there is no restoration feature on the new Platinum Edition DVD or Blu-ray.

Excellent post, Netty. When talking about restorations, Les Perkins specifically cited Cinderella when somebody asked "what do you use as a reference?" He mentioned that the most reliable reference they have are the original cells and he also talked about how they test how the camera used to make the film would represent those colors. And in addition, they bring in people involved in the production when they are available and get their input as well. So while to colors in Cinderella may seem much brighter than we have been used to on home video, they do appear to be the correct colors.

Obviously, Disney has made some mistakes with some of these restorations, but I have been assured by a reliable source that the people who do these restorations have every intention of restoring them to their original brilliance. They are not trying to make these films with their own idea of what the colors should be.

If I had the money. Haha. I'm hoping to get the Book Edition. That's it, though.

I will be getting most of the version. The dwafs plush looks cute, but it may not be something that I need. As for the Blu-ray with Dvd packaging and the Blu-ray with Blu-ray packaging as those seem to be in 2 of the Blu-ray collectors editions that I am getting I am not sure if I will get those also by themselves or not. I might get them by themselves though especially if they can with something exclusive at the store that is selling them (what I mean is only that store has the exclusive item). I will be getting the Dvd only of Snow White also. Also I might change my mind about the drawf plush set and get that also. So I might be getting every version of Snow White.

At a movie theater an hour from me, there's a claw machine with loads of dwarf plushes in it (and a couple of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for some oddball reason). When my mom and I watch a movie there, I have a go at trying to get a Grumpy but the stupid claw snaps up so fast after dropping in the pile, it can't possibly grip and carry anything. Grrr. >_<
