Most Treasures DVDs have a 'from the vault' section which features rarely seen or rarely seen complete shorts
And, what's more, I thought that we finalized that all of the Silly Symphonies will now be on DVD?
Yes they will, it's mention a few posts up that both sets will now provide a complete set of Silly Symphonies.
And, what was wrong with the "black faces" in "The Night Before Christmas"?? It was just soot from when Santa went down the chimney. The same thing with "Junior"; he was looking up the chimney after Santa left, and soot fell on his face. I don't see anything offensive about that.
During the 20s/30s/40s and in some cases even later black faced jokes appeared in many cartoons. They may seem innocent to some, but they were references to comedian Al Jolson who blacked up his face, pretending to be an African American and sang a song called "Mammy". The jokes would have been recognised to audiences at the time as a reference to this, and many have been edited out from most shorts (inlcuding some prints of these The Nightmare Before Christmas). The jokes were basically racist, as times were different back then.

Regardless of whether the jokes were intentionally racist or not the films should not be edited. A disclaimer would be sufficient or a commentary about it by Leonard Maltin but I feel it is unethical and dishonest to NOT deliver the product in its original form.

Well the films won't be edited. From past Treasures waves we have learnt that Leonard always points out the issues.

If youv'e seen most disney animated shorts, Walt Disney really loved that "Mammy" gimmick, i've seen it in more than like 15 cartoons.

That's one reason why we're so happy with the Treasures! :)

It will be interesting to me if these are the two versions above, or there were other scenes I didn't know about.

I also find it "interesting" which shorts ended up "In The Vault" and which ones didn't. Considering the subject matter and just from the title alone, I'm surprised Hell's Bells didn't end up in the Vault. Due to the blackface scene in The Night Before Christmas, I'm surprised it wasn't In The Vault also.
Wait a minute here, I am so confused!! Are the ones that Luke said: "From the Vault" NOT appearing on SS:volume 2?! And, what's more, I thought that we finalized that all of the Silly Symphonies will now be on DVD? (With the one Donald SS being on one of the Chronological Donald volumes)??

The same thing with "Junior"; he was looking up the chimney after Santa left, and soot fell on his face. I don't see anything offensive about that. By the way, sorry if I seem defensive or what ever you wish to call it, but I love "The Night Before Christmas", and my family finds it very special.

ANYWAY, I'm REALLY looking forward to this release!! Silly Symphonies are my favorite of all the Disney shorts. And what's really exciting is that I haven't come anywhere close to seeing all of them (I've seen around 10), So I will get some new suprises.

Sorry about the confusion - I was just pointing out shorts that have previously been censored by Disney (such as The Night Before Christmas) or never before released on video/DVD or shown on the Disney Channel (such as Hell's Bells) were being listed as part of the "regular" toons instead of being included in the "From The Vault" section, which is the section in which Leonard Maltin comments on shorts that are not politically correct. Based on Disney's previous censorship, I did expect those shorts to be included in the "From The Vault" section of the DVD.

I don't personally care whether a short is in the "regular" section or in the "From The Vault" section - as long as the shorts are released uncensored. Nearly all the shorts in the Treasures series have been released uncensored (The Three Little Pigs and The Clock Cleaners are the main two censored toons I can think of right now).

Again, sorry about any confusion.

Yes, that was used a lot at the time - and not just by Disney.

I'm not sure about the other two Figaro shorts being on Pluto. They're either marked as a bonus feature or not there since I think my transcription of the featured content was accurate. But we'd have to wait for Escapay tomorrow to know for sure.

That only tells what the contents are, not on what specific discs they will be on.

Does that really matter? Pick the half-way point and that's probably it. To get a definitive answer, you'll have to wait for Albert's review.

As for quality concerns, I'm done with Disc 1 of Silly Symphonies, and a lot of it is pretty rough-looking and sounding. I'd encourage you to wait for the full review, as I've only watched the older shorts thus far and will be able to elaborate them in my review. Your Host, Walt Disney review will be coming first, however. It should be done pretty soon.

Well, in regards to the "half-way point", as the list for the Symphonies has shown, that halfway point could happen NOT at the halfway mark, at least as far as non-Vault cartoons are concerned. And how am I supposed to know whn the reviews are out. Just 'cause they are released doesn't necessarily mean they will be up on the site the nanosecond they are.

Does it really matter, in 24 hours time you'll be able to buy it and find out for yourself won't you!

There's this site you might not've heard of called www.ultimatedisney.com that posts the reviews when they are done, when it is posted that a review is out, then there's a chance the review is out!

Anyway, on the subject of picture and sound, I wasn't really expecting too much from the earlier shorts in terms of restoration, after some of the black and white Mickey's were pretty bad, so I was expecting about the same. If the later color ones don't look to happy though, neither will I.

Yes, I think it does matter. I truly think it does. In the past, we've managed to figure out what specifically will be on what discs before the sets were officially released, so why can't more of the same be expected here?
