Edit: IMDB says it's 2.35:1, so somethings not right here!
Hairspray could've been shot in a similar way that
A Prairie Home Companion was -- the theatrical exhibition was partly masked off for a 2.35:1 presentation and then the DVD presentation showed more information at the top and bottom when it was unmasked to it's 1.85:1 aspect ratio. It seems complicated, but it could be possible.
Or it's just an error on New Line's part. On Lionsgate's DVD of
Crash, it erroneously lists the aspect ratio at 1.85:1 when actually it was 2.35:1.

I was hoping the same thing too. I remember seeing it on Entertainment Tonight and Oprah. It's a great clip and should be on the DVD. Sadly, the press release doesn't mention anything about it.

So does anyone know if this will be a deleted scene on its own or will it be integrated into the film? I'm hoping for the latter.
And I'm in agreement with others that I prefer the single-disc cover art over the 2-disc. Maybe I'll have to buy both!

I doubt very much it will be integrated in the film. Though "Hairspray" was all about integration, so you never know...

Whhooohooo!!! I can't wait to have this in my little grubby hands. I am so getting the 2-Disc edition! I've seen it 3 times in theatres now and will certainly go for a 4th time since it's still playing here in Germany.
Is anyone going to get the gift-set? I would love to have the bag, but that locker is just so unnecessary in my opinion.

A couple more news about the Hairspray single-disc R1 release. At DVD Empire, they posted up the back art for it, and the official specs are:
- 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
- English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX and 2.0 stereo surround
- English & Spanish subtitles
- Sneak peek at New Line's upcoming The Golden Compass, which arrives in theaters December 7th (only special feature on there, apparently)
So it will be in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio after all, and not the 1.85:1 ratio as erroneously reported.

I did not like ONE of the "new and improved" characters. they made them so PC, Edna was not a wimp and Tracy didn't take shit from Amber. Penny was beyond useless, I couldn't believe it. The music made me want to cry at how awful it was.

Yes I did. It was absoluetly vile. I actually made me depressed. The original was far more amazing. I can't believe John Waters approved and liked it. That girl is NO Ricki Lake and JT is NO Divine!

Well that's why Harvey Fierstein is a better Edna than JT. I didn't much care for the softening of Edna for the film where as in the stage show she wouldn't take any crap from Velma, but, hey, that's a translation for you. Anyhow, read John Waters' thoughts on the musical / movie and you can see why he likes it easily enough.

Ive seen the original hairspray, I have the dvd, it was ok, but-
-I didnt feel for tracy at all
-the wig bomb? Musical Velma>Original Velma
Im sorry, I just don't get how it is better? The musical has great songs+great laughs+a great cast.

I'd love to pick this up the first day, but I probably won't since I have been spending way too much money lately. But, it will definitely be on my Christmas list and I will hope to get it then. This was definitely one o the years best films - can't wait to get it.

Since when are we supposed to "feel" for her? You're supposed to cheer her on and root for her! She's not some tragic character, she's a take charge kinda gal.
The Wig Bomb scene alone kicks the musical's ass. Original Velma played amazingly by Deboarh Harry > Musical Velma played lacklusterly and corpse like by Michelle Pffeifer.
The musical was lackluster at best, way too happy, the songs gave me a headache and was NOT FUNNY AT ALL. It was pathetic. The only time I laughed was during the Black parade thing which was beyond overdramatic w/Queen Latifah crying

. Also I could care less about this new cast, the original will always be the only one.
It boggles my mind how anyone could like it.
