The case of new animation looking too mcuh like past animation is a good one, but since this movie is supposed to be parodying Disney's fairy tale films, I would think they would want the animation to mimic those films as much as possible, too.

I don't mind the softness of the painting, but I wonder if that was the reason I thought it didn't look like Disney animation, though the characters kind of look different in the way they are drawn.

If you really think the animation is good, that does have credit, and raises my own opinion, but I still didn't much like the animation in the clips. I re-watched it on Youtube and it still looks too plain or something, not the flowing, articulate Disney I know.

Special note to everyone who read my previous post: Like I said, Giselle and Narissa seem to stick out from the other Disney characters. At first I thought it was the outlines, and the outlines of the past characters do look smooth, bold, and beautiful, while the ones in Enchanted look thin and pencil-like to me, except some parts of their bodies. Then, just the way they're drawn doesn't look right. It seems every princess has more detail in her face and is more "together" than Giselle's is in the picture of her on the right. And for some reason Narissa's head looks off, like her jaw's unhinged or the artist did a loose, care-free movement when he made her cheeks and chin. But I'm no expert, and I can't place exactly what makes a James Baxter character different from a Disney character. I just know my eyes are telling me Giselle and Narissa don't fit in.

so baxter's quasimodo looked different from a disney character too? animator's distinct style will always be there regardless of the studio they're at.its the artist's trademark style of drawing/animation. like don bluth's rabbit in winnie the pooh, the small one and his rats of nimh, and john pomeroy's rotoscopic milo thatch and john smith.i dont think its giselle's lines, lion king had thin lines too from what i remember in the laserdisc and vhs. perhaps why it looked different is its done economically timewise. nothing can be judged really from a net quality compressed clip unless its HD size. personally i like the giselle from the clip more than the sketch. regarding the actors likeness, i think its the whole intention not to cartoonized them so the audience can connect the two versions of the characters.it wont feel too forced to believe that the cartoon and live action are the same people. if you look at eilonwy, she's not too detailed in design either. heck they even kinda look alike, she and giselle.

if mary poppins' jolly holiday had been totally animated, im sure theyd draw a 80% likeness of dick and julie andrews too. sarandon must be very proud to be immortalized vocally and physically as a baxter character.

Actually, Disneyduster, I did work with animation for 8 years before moving on mostly to live action effects. Some friends of mine were excellent Disney animators and artists, and I learned a lot from them.
Some hopefully useful history:

In the '90's I went to Australia and worked on one ALADDIN episode, OF ICE AND MEN, along with several other non Disney series and feature pilots. The ALADDIN work was with the facilities house that ink, painted, and shot it (I did digital effects as well). It was the first digitally painted episode for Disney Australia, who, after looking us and several alternatives over, went on to its own in-house US ANIMATION system (used right up through CINDERELLA III) shortly afterwards. After 5 years I came back to a collapsed USA animation industry and moved on to live action, save for some recent Disney DVD menu and game animation. The aussie facility I worked for collapsed two years ago.

Ok, enough puny chest beating:

Vector animation systems like US ANIMATION allow extremely thin, consistent lines. Bill Kroyer started this trend with FERN GULLY (which I tested on but could not get the computers to render lines thin enough for him - only crow quill pens worked!), and it's been a mainstay of cel animation ever since. Vector is more limited with shading and color than bitmap systems I've used (or CAPS for that matter), but new additions and processes are eliminating that problem. James Baxter will no doubt come up with a very pleasing final look for his sequence.

Akhenaten, you're right, he did do Quasimodo, and he even did Belle, and looking back, Giselle looks like Belle. But the animation looks off, not as good as Disney's. And the inking is still different.

Kurtadisneyite thanks for telling us what you did! I love the Aladdin series and it's cool you worked on it! I also love special animated effects in movies, and so I find it really cool that you work on those now! It's no puny chest beating, I would love to do what you have done and know as much as you do!

But, are you saying that the Enchanted animation we have seen may not even be finished? It still needs some extra touches, or they just gave us a demo version of a scene to come? Because I was quite unhappy with what I saw in that scene, but I liked some of the other pictures we've seen.

Oh, and I have two other questions: Is your name Kurt? Are the Kurt who did that 3D girl for the "Secret of the Saphire" thingy on Trapcode?

OMG, OMG. These dolls are cool!!! I absolutely love the first Giselle Doll. Her dress and her hair are awesome, and so pretty, and the drawn Giselle on the wrapping looks great!!!
I don't like the 2nd one that much. As somebody already poined out her face is kinda weird (Amy Adams is prettier), but her dress is amazing!!
I can't believe it!!! A Patrick Dempsey Doll???!!!! This is absolutely, undoubtedly amazing!!! D'you think they could make him a Robert Philips/ Dr. McDreamy Doll? They could just add a pair of scrubs and voilà!!

After seeing these dolls, I wonder if these characters will be walking around the parks when the film comes out. I can totaly see a line for Giselle at Disney/MGM-Studios.

So are they officially adding Giselle to the Disney Princess line? Because it really looks like it according to the brand logo on the top left corner of the packaging. I wasn't very sure if they would do that or not.

why is robert under the princess line too? no prince has ever been under the princess line as part of a movie tie-in.

Could the second doll be Idina Menzel? It doesn't look anything like the Giselle doll above it, and why would real Giselle look different from animated Giselle?

Well, I believe the dolls for Prince Eric and Prince Charming had similar box designs to their princesses.

man disney is smart... it will be mothers dragging their children to go and see this movie, for McDreamy!

While watching G.A. i have always thought of Dempsey as a kind of Prince figure, Meridith wants to be with him - yet can't be with him - isnt that always the case in disney movies.

I think they are going for the kitcsh factor here - playing on all the stereotypes of disney movies - it will probably be really funny. It looks lame in the same way that Napoleon Dynamite looked lame - and looked how cultish that became.

She's part of the gang now. Unless the movie tanks. In that case she'll join Eilonwy and Kida as a disney princess reject

In an interview with Extra, James Marsden already confirmed that his character doesn't end up with the Princess, but he also said that because this is a Disney film, there is a happy ending for everybody. I'm pretty sure the prince will end up with Idena Mendel in the end.

I saw that too, and drew just the same conclusions as you. Disney would never leave anyone alone, so I guess Idina will get a prince as well.

I don't think the second doll could be Idina Menzel, as I don't see he wearing this dress, since it's the one we've been seeing on Amy Adams all the time, but who knows? They haven't revelaed too much of the story yet. But the doll doesn't look like Idina or Amy at all. But I guess it's always hard to capture the looks of a human face and make it a doll, but then again, the Giselle Doll looks really nice, but not much like the animated Giselle who (at least on the picture on the box) is blonde, although she had red hair in the preview we've seen. We'll see.

The dolls are wicked; but in a wierd way, I kind of wanted Giselle to prove herself to us, before she was automatically made a 'Disney Princess'. If anyone gets what I mean?

Do you think she goes back to the animated world at the end of the movie? I hope so! Her doll looks so much like Ariel!
