But then why would you not get upset at Disney changing Rapunzel's story so much for Tangled?
Cause that story wasn't even changed that much to begin with. especially from a story that had so little to work with. They both end up prince and princess in the end anyway in the film.

This on the other hand taking a character that had no relation or hint of being a princess(besides helping and aiding one during the journey) to becoming one out of random. It's like if you took Hansel and Gretal and when adapting them, and turn them into princess and prince for no other reason than obvious marketing gimmick. With tangled, besides title change and having more prominent male co-star, nothing else (like the switch-a-roo background roles of the two main characters) give any marketing gimmick to me.

^This.

The only thing about Tangled that struck me as marketing-driven was the title. I still hate it and how long has it been since it was first announced? The rest of the changes always struck me as story-driven rather than marketing driven.

As for Frozen, the title completely smacks of being marketing-driven. It's just stoooooooopid in my opinion. As for the rest of the changes, I dunno. I'll have to wait to see what sort of story they tell.

That being said, I'm not a huge fan of the HCA original to begin with, so they can mess with it all they want and not tick me off. I just hope the end result is interesting and not cheesy (with apologies to those of you who hold the original near and dear in your hearts).

The offical Disney press last month said: Anna was a Dreamer. Now her voice actress Kristen Bell is saying she's a Princess! Unitl Disney announces some more info regarding Frozen, it's anyone's guess who Anna truly is? We don't even know what she looks like or how old she'll be! So many questions, no answers!

Yeah, exactly what others have said. Making Rapunzel a princess seems to have been story driven. They wanted to make a great Disney classic that felt like an older Disney princess movie. But now that Tangled was a success, I'm almost 100 percent positive that the money guys went Princess crazy. I love princess films like I said, but I just hope they don't overdo it in too short a time. (then again, the last time we had three princess movies in the span of four years, we got three of my all time favorites. We'll just have to see I guess.

Is it actually confirmed that there will be a princess in this movie? Bell could just be using the term Disney Princess to refer to a human female character as people often do. Could we wait until we get more information before criticizing and accusing them of falling victim to marketing gimmicks? For all we know, any change to make the main character a princess could also be for 'story reasons'.

I also don't think DIsney has made that many Princess movies at all. I would only consider Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Tangled to be princess movies, really, in that they the protagonists are princesses (and even this is debatable in the case of Sleeping Beauty).

That's how I felt about Rapunzel, which is why I didn't really care about story changes. With TSQ though, a story I actually like overall, it's just disappointing.

Suuure.

I don't mind that the story has magic and a girl-lead (that's a plus for me), I just feel like we already have around 10 characters in the DP line. To add more than that is just going to be ridiculous. Maybe they need a redux and officially kick Mulan and Pocahontas out. And if Anna does become an official princess, the last thing we need is another blonde with blue eyes.

(I am not sure how you misspelt my name when quoting me).

I am still not convinced at all that the protagonist will be a princess. Even the plot summary doesn't seem to support that.

I agree, Loads of people claim "Disney Heroins" are "Disney Princesses"

I agree the HCA versionfeels (in my opinion) kinda slow paced. But I'm sure Frozen will be a success!!

I really do not think they will use or create a Disney Princess story/character for a long time now; they did two in a row after all.

So I can find common ground with you people on the titles being Tangled and Frozen being against the usual Disney way, but not on how they changed the story also being against the Disney way. Life is so messed up.

Tangled was unfortunate in title choice, but I have accepted that now. I don't quite get the problem with 'Frozen', thought it seems quite a good fit ?

Sorry, Duster. In my case, my dislike for the titles has nothing to do with the Disney way - just that I find both to be un-imaginitive. If you're going to "improve" a title, at least come up with something that isn't so generic and could just as easily pass for the name of a porno.

Could I come up with something better? Probably not which is why I'm not in marketing :) and why, I would rather they left the original titles be. Not that my opinion matters much to Disney. I'm gonna go watch their stinking movies, buy the blu-rays, etc. regardless of what the movies are called.

As someone remarked earlier during all the Tangled discussions, the movie will either be good or it won't regardless of the title. I agree with that. Though I loathe the title, Tangled is one Disney movie I could watch over and over and over. If Frozen is a great film, while I may still dislike the title, it won't prevent me from enjoying the movie.

Well I had suggested Rapunzel and the Bandit or Rapunzel and the Thief.

For Frozen, I don't know, The Snow Queen and the Heroes?
SWillie! wrote:Woe is you, Duster. Woe is you.
How I wish you understood. I think you do know Disney's true way, but are tossing it aside for the overall quality. The only thing I would accept is that it was impossible for Disney to make a good movie without the reversing and unfaithfulness.

No offense but if it was a choice between those options and Tangled or Frozen, I'd take Tangled or Frozen.

Also Duster PLEASE do don't start another same debate! Can't you write about it in you Disney Essence Thread? :)

Someone's thinking like whoever comes up with Japanese titles like Lewis and the Future Thief (Meet the Robinsons) Merida and the Frightening Forest, Remy's Magic Kitchen or Grandpa Carl's Flying House.

As much as I'd prefer them to retain the original tale's title, I have to say that I think Frozen sounds much better than The Snow Queen and the Heroes. Sorry, it just does.

Remy's Magic Kitchen sounds like a really bad sit-com, and Merida and the Frightening Forest sounds like an Afternoon Special warning against hallucinogenic drugs. Needless to say, great titles! Are there any more crazy Japanese titles? In case there aren't, here's a few suggestions for some retitling of older films:

Snow White and the Delightful Dwarf Dwelling
Casey Junior's Flying Circus
Bambi and the Hunters
Aurora and the Terrifying Dragon Lady
The Magical Genie Cave
Belle and the Incredible Castle
Ariel the Mermaid (oh wait... ;))
Peter Pan and the Pirates (oh wait again... ;))

:p
