I'm bumping this thread because last time I posted I hadn't finished rewatching all of the movies (I had stopped around Jungle Book, so I did not include any movies between that and The Little Mermaid). Now, I'm done, and I have a fresh mind towards everything (all 55 of them). My opinions and preferences have changed quite a lot over the past year-and-a-half (I'm not even going to look at my prior list as I write this, so I'm making a game out of it). Mostly, though, I just wanted to make another list for personal reference.

I don't think I've ever seen a more precise assessment of the issues I have with the movie.

Based half on my personal opinion about how much I like the film and also on things like commercial/critical success.

Films I consider great and I like/love:

3. Hunchback of Notre Dame (really flawed, but when it gets good, it gets really good. for me honestly the big problem is the uneven tone and the humor, the four main characters are fine by me. I think even keeping the gargoyles but making their humor a little more dark comedic/gallows humor would've worked better)

21. The Black Cauldron (really flawed, annoying bland characters and simple story, but I feel with some reworkings here and there in the writing it would've been a decent film. A lot of Disney films and fantasy stories are really cliched, so I don't get why this one is slammed with that criticism. the animation is pretty decent, all things considered)

I finally saw Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. I thought Chicken Little was funny, but so different from anything Disney had done until then. Meanwhile, Meet the Robinsons was pretty forgettable, but the animation was gorgeous. I also revisited Home on the Range. I don't understand why the Disney fandom hates it so much. Sure, it's not memorable or groundbreaking, but the character designs and the music and the story were pretty great. I remember, back in 2004, when it came out, there were lots of movie posters all over the place, and I loved the character designs, especially Buck, the horse. I thought the jokes were clever, and there were moments when I laughed out loud.

I like HOTR, too. It's not my favorite film, but I do really enjoy it. Whenever I watch it, my husband's always like, "Ugh, Home on the Range, what a bad movie," but then he ends up watching some of it and he really seems to enjoy it, or at least he's captivated by it. So I don't know how much the reputation of the film plays into some people's perception of it. But also it does have slapstick and some humor that some people may not like, so I can understand why some people don't like it much.

Strange World: it tried so hard to exploit the growing popularity of their earlier SciFi flicks Atlantis and TreasurePlanet, through the weird Coronavirus looking Sidekick that is the ugly uncharming version of the adorable Morph and more. Atlantis and Treasure Planet shined through their great likeable characters, while the selling point here was the "Strange World". Wow. It was straight up boring and the main cast was designed really undisney and ugly. It has no likeable qualities at all. A worthy flop. An uninspired attempt to create an alternative for the princess franshise. I bet the animators cried themselves to sleep when they were put for that film.



I will only write something about the top 20, i would be even more bonkerssss if id write a Paragraph over 60 times:

1.The Little Mermaid: Everything about it makes it into a perfect fairytale adaptation. The great, emotional songs, the curious and playful heroine which has a dream and takes risks, a great threatening villain, entertaining and important sidekicks, one of the best climaxes and beautiful Animation. Classic.

2. Aladdin It feels more vibrant and colorful than tLM, a hint more of a character driven plot with slightly better developed protagonists, and bit more beautiful Animation, and its comedic nature is appreciated, although what it lacks are the pinnacle songs and score that make TLM a phenomenon, and the romance is the B Plot for Aladdins journey of self worth. I personally love his character more than Ariels, but with its amount of humour and sass (which still makes it a vibrant experience),  you cant beat a classical, traditional and grand musical fairytale adaptation that is tLM.

3. Lilo and Stitch It has everything a Disney Classic needs: an unique character with a want, an interesting plot, a bit of comedy and most Importantly a big chunk of Heart. Lilo is such a flawed and random character which makes her even more real and loveable. It has so many characters that I love, like Nani, Pleakley, Jamba, David, Bobo and of course Stitch. Stitch and Lilos relationship is the catalist here, but watching Lilo and Nani act like real siblings is also wholesome. Every character is really interesting and shape the plot. And the Heart of the story "Ohana" gets across perfectly. It lacks the iconic scores of BatB, Aladdin or Mermaid, and songs of course, but it doesnt really need those. It all works perfectly and I love Lilo and Stitchs random moments. Also the character designs are so unique!

4. Cinderella. Sometimes I wonder if its right to put Cinderella high at 4, but I just need to remember its wonderful title character and her journey. Cinderella is far from the grand, epic , broadway styled fairytale musical with great songs like BatB, Mermaid or Aladdin, but it has a calm, and elegant charm to it. Its more grounded and her journey is imo way more captivating than of other fairytale protagonists. Also Tremaine is one of the most intimitating villains ever! No magic powers needed! The Transformation scene is beautiful and Cinderellas unfair situation and her hopeful, optimistic attitude is what sells it for me, her emotional journey. She doesnt want much, only a fun night out and all the hard work and hope it all pays off at the end. So captivating. Everybody loves a Cinderella story!

5. Beauty and the Beast has wonderful songs, an iconic score and loveable protagonists. The sidekicks are great, Beast has his great arc and overall its the best way how the fairytale probably could have been adaptated or updated.  Gaston might not feel that threatening like other Disney Villains, but the movie shines anyway through Belles and Beasts Relationship. Beast is so flawed with his short temper and thats what makes him so likeable, especially since he develops into something better throughout the movie. I love Belles introverted persona, her want for more and her escape in books makes her unique besides other protagonists, however she lacks a character shift. Technically Ariel also has no clear growth, but she still gets away with it, as there arent other prominent figures besides Triton that change or have a growth to compare her with, however you notice it here when you have Belle besides the changing Beast. Still, a fantastic classic!!!

6. Sleeping Beauty It has the most beautiful Animation in history (L&tT comes close). It is this grand, epic fairytale, which has wonderful and loveable, flawed characters like the Fairies, a prince with charm, a grand threatening villain and a classic love story. Everything about it is so exaggerated and theatrical, which is one of its greatest strenghts, but also partly its weakness, as it lacks the heart or emotional character driven narrative from the movies above. But the Fairies really own the movie and their interactions are my favourites! Its so fun to see them fight and argue throughout the movie! It still feels like so much fun and I love to rewatch this one!


7. The Emperors New Groove Another case where I love the whole cast of main characters. Kuzco is a really entertaining, funny and loveable protagonist, Yzma is a great, comedic, melodramatic villain and Kronk is one of the best sidekicks ever! The tone of the Film is so unique and outstanding in the canon, and besides of being the funniest movie of WDAS, it still has heart, not as much as Lilo and Stitch for example, but still great and i wouldnt change anything about it. Comedy perfection.

8. Lady and the Tramp It is the most calm and grounded movie Disney has ever made! It feels so romantic, alluring and thats it greatest charm. The characters are so loveable, and Lady and Tramps chemistry is so elegant and believable. And the Bella notte sequence is one of my favourites of all time, maybe on tie with Cinderellas Fairygodmother arriving. Everything here works perfectly.

By nature of the subjects, a lot of this ranking comes down to my emotional response, but my emotional response is also pretty tightly knit with how I think the film works as a vessel of filmmaking.

Some of these have some issues (e.g. Hunchback's tone problem), but still really work. This is still the tier of "Why doesn't this movie have a Disneyland ride?"

Most of the players from Disney's transitional periods feature in here, as well as some of the softer hitters from their high-periods. I genuinely like and refer to these films. My general assessment is that they all accomplish something really impressive, but still have some story issues that needed to get ironed out.
