I really enjoyed the tenth anniversary edition and am also surprised they're coming out with a new one already. I'd prefer nicer editions of Hercules or Hunchback instead but oh well, I do love this movie so I'm not gonna complain. :P

* * *

Ok, so I needed a little break from my current project and decided to mess with that new cover a little. The original that Old Fish Tale posted is the one on the left. . .

Image

Not sure if my edit on the right is any more on-model but I think it feels a little more like her, plus it was a fun distraction to work on.

Nice work, Enigma!

Enigmawing, Pocahontas does look better in your edited version, but there's no saving the cover for me. While the earlier release (with the green cover) was horrible, the color scheme was what I would expect for Pocahontas. Red seems like a weird choice for the movie. And, getting beyond that, the whole thing definitely seems geared toward children. It's extremely "cartoony."

Old Fish Tale- Thanks! I thought it was pretty cool that you posted the cover. :D

Disney's Divinity- Thanks, and yeah; I hear ya there about the cover not really being salvageable. I just wanted to play with her face since everyone was complaining about it. ;) I do like it better than the tenth anniversary edition overall, but bleh . . . I don't typically care much for Disney covers to begin with. I'd love to see them created with much more simple and elegant designs and not the usual cartoony look as you have noted, but eh, I guess they're too worried about attracting the little ones.

The Netherlands.
We get almost every Platinum dvd here (including both discs) but we don't get much other Special editions (or very late.)

Wow Ariel'sprince I cant even begin to tell you how annoying and stupid your comment was. Hunchback is an amazing movie and the fact that you don't like it shows how bad your taste in movies are. It was really unnecessary for you to say that it doesn't deserve a release. A simple "i would prefer a Hercules release over Hunchback" would have been fine. But instead you took you opinion and pushed into our faces in a rude way. I now understand why Disney hasn't released Hunchback in a proper 2 disc set. Its because the have the same small intellect as you.

Ps. I am sorry if that was harsh but your comment really frustrated me.

I don't think I like the whole Musical Masterpiece Edition thing that's going on over in the UK. Why can't it just be a Masterpiece edition? Adding musical in front of it jsut seems weak to me. And i like the set up for this cover a lot, but there's still a lot of work that should be done with it. Flik and Meeko seem to be the only characters on model. Pocahontas and John Smith both seem WAY off. Also the ship, indian villiage, and scenery looks like it was ripped off of a cheap knock-off cover of the film. They don't match the style of the film at all! It also kind of frustrates me that it's obvious that Grandmother Willow is on the cover but her face is not showing.

Overall I think is still like the good ol' fish-face US cover. Although the french special edition cover is my all time fav!

Am I the only one who thinks these "musical masterpiece" editions are fake (apart from the Aladdin one of course, which actually got released)? Both the Mulan cover (which is featured in the "Mulan special edition DVD press release" thread) and Pocahontas cover which is in this thread, look completely off model. Not only that but there has been no confirmation about these titles from Disney as upcoming releases and, other Disney titles like Hercules and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame have yet to be released as a 2 disc set or even released a second time for that matter. It seems unfair if Pocahontas receives a release for the third time when Hercules and Hunchback have only had the one :(

I don't like The Lion King but you don't see me saying "give it a really crappy DVD so the fans will be annoyed with Disney!"

No, but perhaps that's because Disney already has?

I agree. Look, the covers are too wide and the spine's too thin. Not to mention the characters look as though they've been drawn with pencil crayons. Then there's no "Disney Movie Rewards" logo, despite a "Disney DVD" and "Fast Play" logo. The DVD cover seems to be Region 1, also, but I doubt that we'll ever get a "Musical Masterpiece" edition of "Pocahontas" if we haven't already got the "Aladdin" edition.

And come on Ariels'prince. It doesn't matter whether or not you like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". You made an immature statement that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Thanks Coolmanio! :)

Hmm. Getting a fresh look at the artwork I think I should have given her a deeper skin tone. And what's up with John Smith wearing lavender?

No offense to anyone here, I may not totally adore every single movie out there but I never wish for one to not get a decent release. There are many frustrated Hunchback fans that feel a favorite film was glossed over. No one is forcing you to buy a movie you don't like. ;) Well, not unless you're one of those Disney "completists" that must own every edition of every film available whether you like it or not.

Nick Bryant, when it comes to Disney covers, isn't it sort of a tradition for them to have their artists draw the characters off-model? But seriously, I could pick just about any movie off my shelf and find flaws in the artwork where others may see perfection, and vice-versa; it's all subjective. Plus it's typical for this kind of artwork to be a temporary placeholder for ads and such until a finished version can be finalized.

I obviously didn't care for Pocahontas's facial features here myself, they felt too glammed up and exaggerated, but that's exactly what Disney feels would draw little girls in.

UmbrellaFish, I'm guessing that the "pencil crayon" look is a moiré effect, a typical result of a poor quality source (in that it's not a huge, clean, 300 dpi image).

huh? I thought the cover was great. A rather well composed cover.

...an enigma's retouching made it perfect

though it's not as beautiful as the soundtrack cover:

I love how uniquely Pocahontas was animated. Truly a piece of art.

As I was saying, I feel it's subjective but I do appreciate the nod for my tweaking. ;) IMO the original is nicely composed yet doesn't really reflect the feel of the film with the shading and design. Then again you'll find I'm rather picky about this stuff!

Yes, that is exactly the type of look I'd love to see in a DVD cover. I love the feel of the final animation and actually wish they'd use production stills for the cover artwork.

I also love the simplicity of the "deluxe" CAV LD cover:
