You're absolutely right, and I think that it's that overall tone that gives more weight to the dangerous moments: the dogfight, the rat fight, the chase.

Great points all, Netty! I think this is perhaps though one of the reasons why I enjoy Lady and the Tramp so much. It's such a small, unpretentious type of film, but it really hits home for me in conveying great emotion. As I stated earlier, I'm always a rather bit sad that Lady is left out of the group of being a strong heroine, probably because she's not a human character. She's fiercly defensive about her family, she's a tad naive but definitely not dumb, sweet and trusting, but there's a spitfire fiestiness in her at a couple of moments which shows she can stand on her own. Cinderella is still probably my favorite Disney heroine, but Lady is definitely up there in the tops for me.

The romance between Lady and Tramp is one of the greatest in any Disney animated feature, I think. I also really like the supporting cast: Jock and Trusty. The characters are all worked out very well.
Tramp initially has something of a loafer, his encounter with Lady teaches him also to be more responsible.

I think though that Disney took a bit of an easy way out when they showed Lady and Tramp's pups at the end of the movie: 3 looking exactly like Lady adn one the spitting image Tramp. of course in real life they would have looked like an odd mixture. (for instance: a pup with gray hair like Tramp and with lop-ears like Lady's would have been nice)

It's not just Lady and the Tramp. I've seen a lot of talking dog cartoons take this route by having the girls look like the mother and the boys look like the father.

Actually I had no idea that Lady and Tramp had actually er...done it. I couldve sworn that we caught a glimpse of Lady and Tramp's future children at the pound and I thought that maybe that they were adopted from the pound at film's end.

That's what I thought anyway.

Well , at least with dogs we are talking about the same species. The most extreme example I've seen is "The Muppet's Christmas Carol" in which Kermit (Bob Cratchit) is married to Miss Piggy and their sons are frogs and their daughters are pigs. Yes I know it's the muppets and that Kermit and Miss Piggy have a long-standing affair but this went a bit too far IMO: to imagine them having kids together! How could they have done "it"?

The offspring of Amelia and Doppler went a similar route in "Treasure Planet".

Cross and Ben (from Ginga Nagareboshi Gin) - this one surprises me cuz it's an anime and I thought they would be a little more realistic given the dark/serious subject matter

Yes, I know that. I really got a "Lady and the Tramp" deja-vu when I saw that scene in TP.

Nah, those are just some random pups. Actually, they addressed that on the Lady's Pedigree documentary. It is the only DAC (and only Disney movie, period that I can think of) in which "premarital" sex and getting "knocked up" is an actual plot point. I think that makes it rather unusual in and of itself.

dont know if this has been posted already, but found this article about peggy lee and her getting proper payment for her work after the VHS did so well. the article also has a video of her performing "hes a tramp"

I had never heard of that! I’m glad she won. Wow, Disney sure is a crappy employer. I’m surprised L&tT was/is did so well, even though I knew it was one of their big sellers since it’s always included in their elite release lines.

I believe this is the first time I’d heard she was the one who convinced Disney not to kill off Old Trusty. Personally, I’m glad that didn’t happen. I’ve heard people sometimes complain about Disney’s fake-outs with Baloo, Trusty, etc., but a character death wouldn’t have suited L&tT at all. What would Trusty dying have added to the story? How would the film have a satisfying ending with such a depressing moment just before the final scene?

There are people who rants about Chief being alive in "The Fox and the Hound" and felt it was needed. I don't think Trusty's death would've added something to the story.

Just because the fake-outs have been done quite a lot prior to The Lion King (?).

Though, you're right about how Trusty's death would not have worked for Lady and the Tramp. We never would've gotten closure for his "Ol' Reliable" story.
