Disney Shuts Down Production on Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Movie

(In reality, it's only on pause due to the strikes.)
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney paused production on its live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Expected to release on Disney+ in 2024, Lilo & Stitch stars newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Chris Sanders reprising his voice-acting role as Stitch, and Zack Galifianakis as Jumba.

Filming began on May 1 on-location in Hawaii and offered a first look at Stitch's design.

What's particularly noteworthy is the claim that the remake only had a week left of filming before it was shut down.

[...]

The fact Lilo & Stitch was a week shy of wrapping puts the film in an interesting position and presents Disney with several options.

For instance, Disney may choose to finish the movie with the footage it already has.

Since the remake was headed straight to Disney+, this may be best for Disney financially, especially since it would save costs required to resume production post-strike.

While live-action remakes typically do well at the box office, they're not always well-received by audiences. Without the appeal of ticket sales, Disney may opt to halt Lilo & Stitch's production for good.

I don't know why I thought it had finished filming last summer.

Actually, it was supposedly “shelved” or “canceled” in the wake of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes last year.

I've heard no such thing. The strikes caused them to pause it, but I've heard nothing about them possibly canceling it. They only had one week of filming left, you dont cancel it at that point. Unless you're Warner Bros discovery, of course.

Can’t wait to see how they’re going to extract every ounce of charm and charisma out of this property and make it as lifeless as humanly possible.

We are hearing, which is kind of obvious, that the character Captain Gantu will appear in the remake. Additionally, while I could not 100% could not confirm who is voicing the character, I have been told multiple times from people I trust that Kevin Michael Richardson is returning to voice. Richardson voiced the character in the 2001 animated original as well as its many sequels and Disney Channel series.

Oh my… I was so worried about how Stitch is going to look like, that it never occurred to me that we have a lot of other CGI characters in this movie. This is going to be so uncanny valley rotfl

That's a good choice, actually. I really only know him from Aladdin (if I've seen something else he's in, I don't know it), and he was so funny there.

The live-action Lilo & Stitch has officially wrapped filming: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/tjzj5F ... tid=WC7FNe.

Now only one question remains…

will it still be a Disney+ Original Movie that comes out on Wednesday June 26th, 626 Day, or will it be the untitled Disney movie that comes out in theaters on September 6th and switch to a theatrical release instead?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

That was fast. I suppose though, many of Stitch's solo scenes (or the scenes only involving CGI characters) take up around a third of the movie or more, so the live-action portion would go faster.

LA Pinocchio also took only a few months to shoot. At the time, I just thought they were being efficient, but we came to see that it matched how the entire process seemed to be very rushed, which I suppose doesn't bode well for this film.

But also ...
