The Treasures Line has really been a dream come true for me. When I first found the Treasures series (it was during the release of the second wave), I ran out and purchased all of the animated ones, even though I knew I wouldn't have access to a DVD player for another whole year. It was really the Treasures series that got me into the whole dvd thing (being a college student I probably wouldn't have gotton a player otherwise), and now I have a copy of every disney animated classic released on DVD so far. Although I must admit, the Treasures are the only ones that I display on my bookshelf, and reliably keep track of when moving from one place to another. Wow, I waited years to be able to watch these old cartoons again, and after all these years, I will finally have the majority of the theatrical shorts in my collection. This really is amazing when you stop to think about it.

These titles are available through the Disney Educational Series: The Light in the Forest (DVD), Justin Morgan had a Horse (DVD), and Scrooge McDuck on Money (VHS). I checked out The Light in the Forest disc from our public library, and the picture was very good -- at least it wasn't poor quality like Natty Gann or Blackbeard's Ghost. I don't understand why these DVD titles can't be released commercially if the transfer is already in existence.
The "Disney Educational Series" is not a themed collector's set of educational shorts, like we think of the "Legacy Collection" or the "Walt Disney Treasures."

It is a catalog of titles from Disney Educational Productions that offers DVDs/VHS tapes for sale (and rental?) to schools. Genres include Bill Nye the Science Guy, various titles about American legends, language arts, health, "Mickey's Field Trip Series, True Life Adventures, and movies based on literary books like "Johnny Tremain," "Sounder," and "The Chronicles of Narnia."

I don't understand why the titles I mentioned on my earlier post haven't been released commercially since their DVD formats have already been produced.

Regarding Wave 8, how can the release of "Destino" and "Dr. Syn" be considered lazy or a half-hearted effort on the part of Disney?

I thought (I'm not 100% sure, but I THOUGHT) that along with the news last year that the Treasure line would indeed be resurrected with Wave 7, the comment was such that the "Legacy" line was a poor performer whose plug was pulled by Disney. Did I read this on UD, or am I remembering incorrectly? Why else would "Oswald" and "Secrets" be switched over to the Treasures?

So.... if efforts were made to produce "Destino" on DVD, and these other two sister titles [Legacy Wave 2] made it to store shelves, then why WOULDN'T Disney go ahead and treat it the same way?

And regarding the release of "Dr. Syn," I remember a few years ago, an individual name Tom Hering had an EXCELLENT Dr. Syn (Primarily Disney) fan site whose content also included news/progress on Disney's scarecrow restoration efforts, including leads from an inside source. I recall a news post that mentioned there was a portion, or portions, of the live-action production that Disney was trying to locate better quality materials.

So, what's so disappointing about the fact that "Dr. Syn" will be a Treasures volume? Look, all of the pieces have finally come together: a restored product AND an interview with Patrick McGoohan.

And, let me tell you.... I think MANY people will be seeking the "Dr. Syn" Treasure out. You've seen how high the VHS title goes for on eBay and Half.com, haven't you?!

This time around, I may pre-order my Treasures for in-store pick-up at Best Buy, to make sure I get them!

>>>>> Again, THANK YOU, DISNEY, for these Treasure titles!!

Well, if the Figaro cartoons, which were included on Pluto 2, are any indication, it's a possibility that the C&D shorts may be released with Donald 4.

My single most anxious inquiry is this: will it contain the 3 classic Chip and Dale shorts, namely Chicken in the Rough, Two Chips and a Miss and The Lone Chipmunks? Do you have any information or educated guesses on that?

Thank you...that makes more sense now. Does anyone know how these "educational" releases can be obtained. Surely, someone must be able to get them through a friend or relative who is in the education business, right? How would that teacher or librarian go about it?

...and even more perfect if they'd include Susie The Little Blue Coupe and Casey Bats Again. I know, they don't seem very relevant to Donald, but it would to some extent tie up the loose ends.

Either way, I agree that Disney releasing a pretty much complete collection of the classic animated shorts is a dream come true.

Doc - the 31 shorts will not include the Chip and Dale. However, that does not preclude them from being in the bonus features as Cleo shorts were in Pluto.

Well to me, donald and the wheel and the litterbug are such eduactional shorts, especially the litterbug, it doesnt really provide much entertainment. If that's the case, y didnt they add the two car shorts to the goofy collection.

Chicken in the Rough and Two Chips and a Miss are both on the Classic Cartoon Favourites #4 DVD, which is why I bought it. Between the Treasures and that, just missing The Lone Chipmunks, which if it's on the Davy Crockett DVD, I might have a look into to "complete" the set.

As you might guess from the avatar, I'm a bit of a chipmunk freak ;)

I reckon there's a very good chance they'll be on as extras, in the same way as the three Figaro shorts were included as bonus material on Pluto V2.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unrelated point #1: I've never seen Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. In fact, I've scarcely even heard of it until now. What's the big fuss?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unrelated point #2: I see on Cartoon Brew that someone's claiming that Susie The Little Blue Coupe is public domain. (They say it's one of three shorts - I know The Mad Doctor is also PD - anyone know what the third might be?) I wonder if that's got anything to do with it not appearing on the Rarities Treasure - and if it's the reason it's not on the UK version of Ichabod & Mr Toad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unrelated point #3: I must say I've got to admire slave2moonlight's unwavering faith in the undimmed future of the Treasures (under whatever title); but he is from the USA, the home of faith. Mr Toad and 2099net and myself are all cynical old Commonwealth-ites, which I'm sure is the root of the difference of opinion...

Here's my opinion on the announcement of the contents on Wave 8 of the Treasures and the question of future Treasures.

IF Wave 8 is indeed the last of the Treasures series, at least Disney is releasing the last Donald Duck volume. Yes, it would be nice if the Chip & Dale / Susie, The Little Blue Coupe / Casey Bats Again shorts were included in this set BUT THEY ARE AVAILABLE ON OTHER DVDS!!

I'm most looking forward to the Donald Duck set. I'm most looking forward to having the Donald / Humphrey The Bear shorts on DVD. They still make me laugh even after seeing them hundreds of times on video tape. The last five Donald shorts are all "educational" but I find them entertaining also. They are the 1956 How To Have An Accident In The Home, the 1959 Donald In Mathmagic Land, the 1959 How To Have An Accident At Work, the 1961 Donald And The Wheel, and the 1962 The Litterbug. I've owned these on video tape for decades and still enjoy them.

I'm not THAT interested in the other two sets.

I suspect that the Destino short, which I've never seen, will be more weird than entertaining. The rest of the set is nearly all padding - of some historical interest, but not much entertainment.

I have seen the Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow and it just didn't interest me. I had it on video from the 1980s Disney Channel but didn't even keep it because it just didn't appeal to me. I will buy the Treasures set because (1) I will own all the others and (2) my tastes may have changed over the years and I might enjoy it now.

IF WAVE 8 IS THE LAST WAVE, my feelings are mainly gratitude for the series ever being released. I've owned most of the Treasures contents on video tape since the 1980s, so my main interest has always been to get these wonderful creative films in better quality on DVD. If someone had told me back before the start of the series release that these 28 sets of wonderful Disney magic would be released in less than 7 years (Dec 2001 - Nov 2008), I would not have believed it.

The future of the Treasures series is all speculation at this point. I will be surprised if there is a Wave 9, or a replacement series of sorts for the Treasures. Whatever the future holds for the series, I'll be glad to get this Wave 8 and will always be grateful to Disney for releasing this series.

I am currently working on an index to the Treasures series for my own use. I often am interested in watching something but not certain where it is in the Treasures, especially if it is an extra or an Easter Egg. Hopefully I'll have the index done by the time Wave 8 comes out, so I can add that info also.

I'm still very surprised that the Treasures series hasn't sold better. Even given the limited print runs of most of the sets, many of the sets have been available directly from Amazon years after release. I would have thought the sell through time would have been much less, expecially with the two sets in Wave 7 that were only 50,000 units.

Well, that's my thoughts on the Treasures series, until more news is available on the exact contents and any future Waves.

Wow! "The Chronological Donald - Vol. 4" which will be the next DVD in the Walt Disney Treasures series to complete the saga. It has more Donald Duck cartoons from 1951 all the way to the end of the series probably 1961 or so.

"The Disney That Almost Was", is the DVD that I've never heard of, it features "Destino", a cartoon that never completed. It was first planned in 1945 after "The Three Caballeros" was made.

It was planned for "Fantasia 2006", but it was cancelled, so that they will used it as a short instead. I will show you in Wikipedia which is all about "Destino", a short made by Walt Disney and Salvador Dali.

The reason was simple - they absolutely maxed out what they could put on 2 DVDs. The just would not fit.

The Goofy set had 45 shorts or so, so there should be capacity for quite a few additions to the 31 DD shorts in the final volume.

I've got the Melody Time DVD with Casey and the other "loose ends" on laserdisc, so the collection will be complete - somewhat. But the same could be said about a lot of other shorts... What seems to be within reach is the complete collection in the WDT format - which would be "neat" indeed!

Either way, I AM grateful for what there is so far (and particularly in November with the remaining DD shorts). This is so much more than there was reason to expect a few years ago.

Yes I'm aware of the actual DVD versions of the C&D shorts, however the restoration is much better on the Treasures series and I believe Chip and Dale deserve the best possible quality. Besides, I'm not going to buy a Davy Crockett 2-DVD set just for one episode (I consider myself a fan but not THAT much).

At this point, I agree with that remark.

A few years ago, I planned to buy only one Davy Crockett product and I wanted the most complete and worthwhile release. I weighed reviews and comments about the differences between the Crockett Treasure volume and the 2-movie set (It's a 2-movie set, not a 2-disc set.), and ended up choosing to purchase the Treasure.

I prefer not to spend my money on a double-dip for the benefit of a single cartoon when there are PLENTY of other Disney and non-Disney DVDs I still have on my wish list. Of course, it always depends on the title of the lone item.... If the carrot was "Dad, Can I Borrow the Car?" I wouldn't hesitate to double-dip!! ;)

That's exactly what I did as well.
However, if Donald vol 4 doesn't include the C&D cartoons after all, and if Dr. Syn indeed includes both the TV episodes and the film edit, I might go crazy and want to buy the Davy Crockett movie DVD as well... For completeness' sake.

But I'd like to have "The Adventures of Chip & Dale" hour show as well, with that nifty theme song and Walt's part restored (he was cut after his death).
