She looks like a Bratz doll high on cocaine. I hope she has a normal look as well...

Lol I can see that too. However, I actually think she could very much look the part. Her acting on the other hand is what I'm worried about.

I don’t know her. I think Little Mix is that band who put out “Wings,” right? I’ve never heard the original or seen them perform, so I wouldn’t be able to judge anything about her (much less her hypothetical acting abilities).

Armani Salado and Mory Hatem are two of the actors currently auditioning for the role of Aladdin.

Really? You didn't like Emma as Belle neither?

No, I liked Emma's acting. Her singing was not trained/auto-tuned

And incomprehensible.

Jonathan Freeman isn't dead. Can't they get him? Blegh...

This fits Ritchie's vision of Aladdin told as a British crime drama though, or whatever he calls it. I'm really curious how they're going to fit the music in there. This approach seems at odds with the Broadway style soundtrack...

What in the world... rotfl

Is this the same guy who wanted to turn The Lion King musical into some roadtrip adventure that ends up at some casino?

I didn't remember the quote. But found it:
‘My stories are really about street hustlers. That’s what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good.’

What I'm saying is, this is the director of Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. He's going to bring in some of that style. He's worked with Tom Hardy before. Just confirms this is going to be a very distinct version of Aladdin.

What a strange casting choice, I can't picture him as Jafar. And I know Disney probably wants a well-known actor for the role, but couldn't they find someone Arabic that was famous enough for them? I don't like it when white actors are cast for roles of people from other ethnicities. Not only because it deprives an actor from that ethnicity to perform it, but because it makes the character less believable, at least for me.

I keep trying to imagine Tom Hardy as Jafar and I just can't. What a horrible casting decision.

Well this apparently came from The Sun newspaper so I wouldn't put any faith in it until a more reliable source corroborates it.

That said, I'm not seeing it. I can kind of see Will Smith as the Genie (very different from Robin but I think he could be good if given the right material) and he would bring the necessary "star power" to the film that the studio would want since they're (thank goodness) going with unknowns who can actually sing for Aladdin and Jasmine. But Tom Hardy as Jafar? I just can't see it. Plus if they are going to cast a white actor in the role, then (as PatrickvD said) why not get back Jonathan Freeman? He's still bringing Jafar to life every night on Broadway, he's the right age for the part and, when you see him live, see his mannerisms and facial expressions, he IS Jafar come to life on that stage.

That said, I'm more than happy to be proven wrong. Most people thought Heath Ledger was a bad choice for Joker and he turned out incredible. Will Smith I can see being a studio pick (they already wanted him for the live action Dumbo) but Hardy, if true, sounds like it comes from Ritchie so there must be a reason for it, for all we know he may have given a perfect audition and be just what that part needs.

Whatever happens this film is definitely going to be unique. Given what's been said it doesn't sound like they're playing it safe with a direct animation to live action reproduction. It both excites and terrifies me

This makes me nervous.
Q: Can you give us any teasers of what to expect with Aladdin?

Alan Menken: It’s a very fluid process. Guy Ritchie is directing and he’s never directed a musical before so it’s going to be a lot of attempts to reinvent the wheel. Where it’s re-inventable, we will do it and where it’s not, we will discover that together. But it has to be a very fast discovery process because at this point shooting is supposed to start in August.

Tom Hardy is a bizarre choice for Jafar. But maybe he will turn it out. He is a good, versatile actor. I wonder if they will make Jafar more sinister in the live action version, similar to how they made Gaston a bit more sinister.

While the studio had interest in Dev Patel, 27, and Riz Ahmed, 34, the male lead will likely be a newcomer. Sources say the studio is eyeing Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott, 24, or Indian actress Tara Sutaria, 21, to play Jasmine, but can’t lock the deal until the male lead has been selected since chemistry is so important to the story. (Will Smith is signed on to play the Genie, and sources say the studio is after known names for the role of the villain Jafar). Among the newcomers who were still in the running for the riffraff/street rat in the most recent rounds of testing were Dutch actor Achraf Koutet, Canadian actor Mena Massoud and American George Kosturos.

I hate to be that guy, but why is the genie (slave to the Magic lamp) played by a black actor? Shouldnt they all be middle eastern? This is far more offensive to me than Indian actors as Aladdin and Jasmine.

Maybe I'm opening a can of worms here, but in Will Smith is just a completely ridiculous choice.
