Jiminy: Right!

Well, the response "Right!" by Jiminy is missing--both from the new mix for the Blu-ray release and from the original mono mix also included on the disc.


There is another piece of Jiminy's dialogue missing from the end of the same song. When Jiminy has always said "Look out Pinoke!", as Pinocchio falls over, there is...nothing.

Funny enough, I got my replacement disc for Pinocchio on Monday with my replacement discs for Little Mermaid and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Mind you, is the "Look out, Pinoke!" Missing even from the replacement disc?

Well listen to your replacement disc and find out. I got the idea to do this so late because of you, you know.

I just got a copy of the Platinum Blu-Ray in the mail today finally! It was something I always meant to get and then I waited too long, then it was gone and cost around $100+ for a used copy on Amazon. I can't remember who it was, Escapay or JeanGreyForever maybe, who recommended to look for it after the release of the Signature edition. I got it for $15. Thanks.

What's really amazing is that it came sealed in plastic with a sticker over the opening like a brand new product??? I swear I bought it used, but looks like I got a new one in disguise. Not that I'm complaining. The jump in quality from the VHS copy I've been watching for years and Blu-Ray is pretty stark. This brings my total of Disney animated films on Blu-Ray up to 7: Pinocchio, Dumbo, B&tB, TLM, TP&TF, Tangled, and Frozen. I'm going to slowly try to build my collection up now that my VHS player is dying and they don't sell them anymore. Thanks so much to Luke's fantastic reviews in helping decide what I should buy (especially when some films that've had more than one Blu-Ray release).

I just wanted to ask anyone who might have both the Hercules Gold Collection DVD and the later Blu-Ray--how different is the quality between the two for you personally? I want to get it eventually, but I might not make it a priority right now over other movies even though it's a favorite. I imagine Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Fantasia and One Hundred and One Dalmatians all look especially amazing on Blu-Ray (forever kicking myself for not buying that SB steelbook years back). I wish I didn't hate Cinderella's color changes over the years, because I love that film and would like to get it, too, eventually. Still not as bad as TSitS crap deal though.

But, about Pinocchio, it looked phenomenal, particularly the ocean scenes which have always been my favorites. Watching the deleted scenes, the one with first Figaro and then Geppetto wanting to eat Cleo had me rolling. I'm so glad it was cut because it's a little darker than I'd want for those characters, but still I cracked up when Geppetto finally broke down and started repeating "eat Cleo..." like a man seeing a mirage in the desert. I'll watch this edition's making of later.

Congrats on getting your Pinocchio platinum edition! And a new one at that. I remember giving advice on how to snag a cheap copy on here to someone, but I'm not sure if it was you I said it too.

Disney Movie Rewards always adds a bunch of blu-rays to their rewards selection during the holiday seasons. You already have The Little Mermaid and Dumbo, but they have Cinderella as well, if you don't feel like paying for such an awful transfer, but still want a copy of it. Most of their selection is Pixar films though as well as Disney sequels.

I don't have the Hercules Gold Collection DVD, but I've heard a lot of people complain about the video quality and praise the Blu-Ray transfer in comparison. So I can't say personally how I feel about the differences, but people said the Blu-Ray was worlds better. If only it had a better assortment of bonus features.

You should be able to find Bambi cheap right now as well. It was the last vaulted Blu-Ray I was missing and I bought it a long while before the Signature Edition came out, but for some reason, Bambi was never as expensive as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, and Beauty and the Beast. Probably because it's only got one Blu-Ray disc as opposed to the two on those films, and it having been released later. So it should especially be easy to find now for a good price, since it was never too expesnive. Sleeping Beauty looks amazing and it has some great features as well so I would recommend that especially. Fantasia got the raw end of the deal with the bonus features all being Virtual Vaulted, so this is the only vaulted Blu-Ray I still don't have. It's probably silly to wait for its Signature Edition, since they'll probably just give it the The Lion King treatment and put all the Virtual Vault bonus features on Movies Anywhere. Still, I heard mixed reviews about the transfer, with some sequences have incorrect colors, so I'll wait and see if Fantasia gets a new transfer (although I pretty much already know the answer to that). It's not one of my favorites, so I don't mind not having it right now. 101 Dalmatians used to be a reward on Disney Movie Rewards as well but I don't remember if they still have it. I think they removed it and The Jungle Book as well.

I really loved the Pinocchio scene where Geppetto tells Pinocchio the story of his grandfather, the king of the forest. I guess it confirms that Pinocchio is a prince after all. The scenes with Cleo almost being eaten were hilarious, but I'm glad they were cut. I wouldn't have been able to look at Geppetto the same way again.

I haven't read the novel in a while so maybe his grandfather was mentioned or something, but I don't remember. I'm pretty sure Disney invented this though for the film and it's the only time he's been given a royal lineage. In the novel, Pinocchio is created from some sort of enchanted wood.

Oh, ok. I did read some of the novel when I was younger and I do remember Pinocchio strangely coming from unexplained enchanted wood. Disney really improved the idea with the Blue Fairy's enchantment.

I've been following this great blog recently (The Great Disney Movie Ride) and I learned something I didn't know at all about Pinocchio. Apparently Geppetto's voice actor was a Nazi sympathizer and the animators really didn't like him for this.

I want to finish my discussion of Geppetto by ruining some childhoods. Christian Rub, who voiced Geppetto, was a notorious Nazi sympathizer. Everyone around the studio hated him, naturally, because he’d run around the studio praising everything that was going on in Europe. The animators finally had the proper response to having to work with a Nazi sympathizer. Under the pretense of studying the movements of Geppetto’s raft when he’s fishing, they sent him on a wild and nauseating ride on a rig just to mess with him. I’m proud of everyone on that animating team.

at the raft ride. I guess he was locked into a contract...would firing him have been discriminatory? I've always liked Gepetto's voice... I won't stop watching the film...it's like with any problematic actor...give up a favorite film or just wince when they come on screen...

That's the thing, I always liked Geppetto's voice as well and felt he sounded so warm and reassuring like the kindest grandfather or uncle a person could have. That's why it's so shocking to realize what his real life counterpart was like because it's so jarring from the image I've built up in my mind. And I definitely won't boycott Pinocchio for this, but it's something I'll probably always keep in the back of my head now so I hope it doesn't tarnish my views too much. It's a bit like I heard some really horrible things about Dr. Seus so whenever I see any of his books now, that comes to mind first.

Since I didn't stop rewatching Hercules, I probably won't stop rewatching Pinocchio, though it is disappointing.

James Woods is basically a neo-Nazi if you've seen his Twitter. I was never a huge fan of Hades anyway and thought he was overhyped as a villain so it didn't do much to me. He's a pedophile as well in case the right-wing association isn't enough for some although in my experience, the two go hand in hand.

And just to make clear in case anybody got the wrong idea, I'm not advocating that because an actor was problematic, particularly one who lived in 1940, that the actor's film should no longer be watched. Although I'll admit that I'm not particularly inclined to support Ansel Elgort's West Side Story now.
