Besides, a more empowered character like Belle suits her, tbh. I can only imagine if she'd been wasted on Cinderella, we could've been stuck with Kristen Stewart here. *shudder*
I think Lily James may have done a better performance in
Cinderella than the one we're getting from Emma in this movie.
tsom wrote:Thankfully, your opinion is the minority. I, too, am glad Emma Watson didn't do Cinderella (and La La Land as well since she was considered for the lead role), otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten the lovely Lily James.
Yea I agree.
JeanGreyForever wrote:Belle suits Emma Watson more than Cinderella anyway imo but I might be too stuck on Harry Potter. If she had played the role of Cinderella, I wonder if she would have turned her into a more active character, at least for the climax of the film.
Exactly. I think Emma would have tried very hard to make Cinderella more empowered just like she did with Belle.

Disney's Divinity wrote:That would explain why she wouldn’t really see Cinderella as that empowered of a character, lol. And assuming they could have sent her a script at the time of offering the role to her—if they had a script at that time—finding out the adaptation would have one of the *most* passive versions of the character would’ve only maximized the issue.
Yeah. Cause Pocahontas truly is feminist, giving up her love interest to help her people.
JeanGreyForever wrote:That makes me feel a little bit better about liking this film considering all the hate it gets, not just from Disney fans, but also people who feel the film is offensive to the legacy of the real Pocahontas.
Me too, but regardless of the hate,
Pocahontas is still beloved by it's fanbase. Despite it's reputation, it's still been somewhat regarded when it had it's 20th Anniversary. So therefore my guilt for liking the film is not as huge.

Though I thought the song was a duet. Isn't it sung by Belle and Maurice in the movie?

Hope the song is great. Clearly Disney is coming for that Oscar again.

Not sure, but I remember reading it's first sung by Maurice, and later by Belle as a reprise.

It would have been cooler if they had made it into a duet and brought Peabo Bryson back too. Also, I don't understand why they changed the song's title. "Our Song Lives On" is a much catchier title than "How Does a Moment Last Forever"

Celine's and Peabo's careers sort of went in opposite directions though. And I still haven't forgiven him for mispronouncing 'pursue' in A Whole New World. Celine didn't speak a single word of English at the time and she got it all right.
I would need to hear the song to understand the title change. Sometimes more than one lyric can stand out and be memorable enough. I think there are still quite a few people that seem to think 'Beauty and the Beast' is actually called 'Tale as Old as Time'.
Maybe this is a similar song in that it works with two titles? Just guessing.

For goodness sake, I still don't understand that way of thinking; bashing one doesn't make the other better ! Disney themselves are massively guilty of this; slate slate slate the 'old' Princesses and their values because the new wave is so much better blah blah blah. I'm sure, as has been said, Emma didn't directly say it like that, just how its been picked up. All of the Princesses have their own fantastic qualities, and personally, I enjoyed the performance by Lily James in
Cinderella. The role is almost painfully vanilla, but adding the element of 'Have courage, and be kind' / 'Where there is kindness there is goodness, and where there is goodness there is magic' ... that really added something special. And as Lily said herself, Cinderella is this mythical Princess icon figure as its neigh on impossible to be
that good and kind as a constant. I feel it was directed well on further reflection by Kenneth Branagh.
I know Emma is a feminist icon and all that, but I feel the line of Emma and Belle is now being blurred completely; Belle has been stamped as a feminist and powerful and this that and the other. Belle is a brilliant character in herself for sure, I am in no way disputing this, but feel like I'm being beaten over the head with how much of a powerful feminine icon she is.
I am however totally and utterly looking forward to this, despite the vocal worries of the auto tuned sounding 'Something There'. The marketing has totally and utterly done its job; I am totally enveloped and swept up in it, lock, stock and barrel ! And getting Celine back to perform a song is just the icing on the cake

I can't find for the life of me, a link to pre order the deluxe edition of the soundtrack here in the UK ? Doesn't seem to exist on amazon.co.uk at all, or on iTunes ... are we getting one ?

I think it's
this one. It doesn't say "deluxe edition" but it's a two-disc set so this must be it.

Yet Beauty and the Beast is just about half of that, and the makers of the film feel that the animated Belle, despite being a feminist figure of her time, is not feminist enough for contemporary audiences and thus must be further revamped.
Makes you wonder if Cinderella being so passive in the 2015 film was the explicit reason she gave them for turning it down. I seriously doubt Emma Watson had anything to do with the few changes to Belle though.

I’m sure you could’ve pre-written your thoughts on the finished film 2 years ago. I’m sure

Wouldn't surprise me. I'm not sure how much influence Watson had on the role but she already confirmed that she refused to wear a corset so that stylistic change came from her. And considering that Disney has been trying to get her to accept this role for years now (she had already signed onto a non-Disney BATB film earlier), plus this new revelation that Disney pursued her for Cinderella (probably because she was supposed to be part of the non-Disney BATB), makes me think that if she did try and influence the character, she would certainly be able to get away with it.

I'm glad you enjoyed her performance. I thought you didn't. And when you say the role is vanilla, do you mean just the 2015 one or all Cinderella roles?
I thought I read that Emma actually did say she wanted Belle to be an inventor, and I know she decided to make her wear boots, so I believe I that she did indeed help make a lot of the new changes to Belle.
And the revelation that she turned down Cinderella actually isn't new, we knew about it in the thread about the
Cinderella 2015 film.

The role of Cinderella is a hard one, for the aforementioned reasons that I gave. I'm not saying its a negative role, or she's not a role model or anything like that; but as I said, there is a
reason why she is this mythic, fairytale character. Which is why I like the twist of using her kindness and courage as such wonderful attributes. Cinderella is a hard role for sure, but Lily James is sweet in the role. The film holds up really well on further viewing.

Well, look at that: the remake is going to be a Disney Cruise show! (Under Male and Female Vocalists for Disney Cruise in Chicago)

Boy is that poster good!!!
Atlantica, I responded to what you said in the thread Disney's Divinity linked to.
OMG! I just realized if Emma Watson was the 2015 Disney Cinderella, it would have been really weird because her fairy godmother essentially attacked her, accused her of stealing from her, and carved "Mudblood" in her arm. And Emma had a previous crush on the director. (I hope everyone knows what I'm talking about was only within a film series...)
