Agreed REINER. I really like the way the title looks, especially in the movie with the stone/rose appearance.
I can't wait to get this, simply because it will upgrade one of my last VHS Clamshells to dvd. As well for the movie of course, which I enjoyed a lot more in my childhood. Will have to go back and rewatch it to figure out where I stand on it now though.
On a non-dvd note. Does anyone else have the old collectors plates that were released when the movie first came out? I recently found one while preparing to move and was curious if anyone else has these.
EDIT for spelling.

I don't have one myself, but when I was in a production of BATB this spring, a little girl brought one of those plates to rehersal (or so I presume it was one of the plates from 1991). Do you know if one of plates had Belle and the Beast dancing(?) on the balcony with the servants there?

That's the one I have

Belle and Beast in the ballroom dancing, and Chip, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and...the dog are at their feet all happy.

For those who care, I've updated my original color comparisons with brand new, much higher quality ones, using the press images found on
Mouse Info. These are the same images found on Disney's official website, only MUCH higher quality (well beyond HD, so you can see every pencil mark on the animation and brush stroke on the background art). I also added a new comparison between Gaston's tavern (where the red-hue is the most prominent). I deleted the old ones and replaced them, so I wouldn't be over crowding this thread with endless posts featuring these comparison images that not everyone cares for.
http://www.dvdizzy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 413#510413
I'd also like to make it clear as to the reason I'm posting these comparisons in this thread as opposed to the one already made to discuss the color/changes. Simply put, these images are being used specifically to promote the Diamond Edition release, so there is a
possibility that they could represent what we see this October. If these were being used to promote the 3D re-release or were just old VHS/Laser-Disc images, I wouldn't be putting them here.
For those who hate these comparisons, thanks for putting up with me.
Wow. These look great,
jpanimation.
I can only hope these pictures will possibly be the new transfer, and just like how the original was. If not the restoration the pictures display, then at least something close to it.

thanks for doing these comparisons! much appreciated.
The fact that Human Again was animated in the original color palette gives me confidence that we will see the original colors on the Bluray release. I will probably appreciate the sequence more if I were able to finally see it the way it was meant to be seen.
I can even forgive them the shots that were re-animated for IMAX just as long as the colors are correct. And judging from the promotional images, it looks like they will be.
I think BatB on BD will be a sight to behold. I want it to make my jaw drop.

The caps taken from the official website are NOT reliable. The contrast and the color balance are wrong. Until we have no true caps from the Blu-Ray, we won't be able to check if the new restoration is ok or not.
I've taken one example of the caps that jpanimation posted and did what I think is the correct image.
The first one is from the official website, the second one a DVD cap and the last one is the one i corrected. What do you think?

I posted them because the caps from
Dumbo's official website ended up being the one's we got. So the
possibility exists that, whether you feel these are correct looking or not, they could be what we get. To me, I'd be satisfied with these colors as I honestly can't remember what they "truly" looked like (since it's been about 20 years since I've seen it in theaters).
With that said, may I inquire as to how you know what the correct colors are?

The first one looks correct, the second one looks like Belle did some tanning with the Jersey Shore girls and the third one looks like Belle got attacked by a pink paintbrush from Disney's DTV department.
so long story short, the first image resembles the movie I remember the most.

This is a good question.
I can't say "this or that are correct" because I don't know what the original intention of the filmmakers is. The thing is that I find that the captures from the official website have a cyan dominant, and the whites are too much contrasted comparing with the DVD or the VHS. The look so artificial, specially this:
Don't you appreciate that the image is blue-toned, that the white on the Belle and Beast clothes is too much bright and the castle in the background is... green? I'm completely sure that these are promotional images and no actual caps from the Blu-Ray. It's not a well-balanced image, and it's not because any concret intention.
I know, I know, we always refer to the old VHS, that could look a bit dark or brownish, and maybe it's not the most reliable source. But I still find it as the most "natural" color scheme, the most believable. Of course, now we have digital formats and the movie can be transfered from the original digital source to a DVD/BD, and I can accept a SLIGHT color variation, but the image we got in the DVD was clearly altered (because there is no need to "restoration" since the movie exists in a digital form because of the CAPS), and the image of the new caps don't make me happy again. I'm sure that the original digital picture is brighter and more saturated that we saw in cinemas and VHS, but not as much than the DVD.
By the way, I'm mad to get this:
http://www.alivetorrents.com/torrent/76 ... al-edition
It's a Laser Disc-rip, but there is no seeds anymore. Any idea where can I find it?

Well, Unfortunately I don't think we will get the original colors in the BluRay release.
The trailer for the release shows the film with the altered colors, which are more apparent in gaston's awfully red clothes!

I hope when the Bluray is out, someone posts here screenshots comparison of VHS/Laserdisc - DVD - Bluray to see what has happened to the colors eventually..

You took the words right out of my mouth lol.
If you look at the first Platinum Edition DVD release below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJOoEQAs9-U
You will see the original colors.
When you pop in the DVD however, it looks NOTHING like that trailer.
So I pray Disney does the right thing and bring them back!
(Here's to hoping lol!!!

How deceptive. Once again proves my point, the Human Again sequence is shown there with the original color scheme. Something happened between the time that new sequence was animated and the time the DVD was released.

Oh how I miss this beautiful ballroom scene! Belle's dress shined so nice and the beast didn't look like he was yellow! It actually looked night time as well! Sighhhhhh.

However, since it's the trailer for the 3D release, I'm holding out hope that it's only extra bright to accomodate the glasses. Yeah, it's 2D version, but still.
If not, I'm afraid this release may actually be worse.

I wonder if the fans' uproar over the altered colors ever reached the directors of the film. It usually does. I think they [Wise and Trousdale) need to watch the DVD 10 times in a row and then watch the 1992 VHS. That's what happened to me and my jaw dropped. The film suddenly had much more style and quality to it
