I found all the Playbill interviews quite interesting. As for Mother Gothel, I always thought she didn't have any real affection for Rapunzel and was just being a good actress when she was sweet to her, but I guess it makes sense she would become a bit fond of her after all these years, even though she's so selfish and vain.

I honestly thought that there was a little part of her that really cared. Even on Rapunzel's side, she clearly grown some fondness for her even after she found everything out (she reaches for her after Mother Gothel falls out of the tower). I always thought that was a sophisticated, nuanced, and tragic villain-victim relationship, I thought it was brilliant! It's one of the many reasons I love the film so much.

I agree with you. The only love Gothel has for Rapunzel is the love any person has for people around them all the time--that feeling when you miss somebody you didn't even like when they're not around anymore. That's not maternal love though, which would've made for a more complex, better villain. Rapunzel might as well be a potted plant to Gothel.

When Donna Murphy says Mother Gothel unexpectedly came to love Rapunzel, I take it she means maternal love.

Reviews about the 4K presentation of The Little Mermaid are positive so far.

I'll be buying this Little Mermaid for sure! I'm hoping it looks the best it ever has! And maybe one day I'll get a 4K player and TV so I should pick that up too? Does the 4K come with a regular Blu-ray?

Well, this is surprising. I really expected them to use the same restoration as the Diamond Edition, but I see they went ahead and re-restored it. The colors are noticeably different in the screen caps they provided in the reviews.

If you have a previous version on Movies Anywhere, and you buy the new version (Diamond to Signature, for example), your Movies Anywhere account won't receive the new extras, right?

I hope somebody does a color comparison between the Blu-Ray and 4K editions.
I am curious too if those who own the previous film will automatically get upgraded with the extras.

Yes.

Thank you! Then I guess I will buy the 4K since it comes with a Blu-ray.

What is your prediction on when Disney will announce the next signature title?

Maybe Aladdin for the live action remake but then again I've seen plenty of predictions about a signature release around the live action remakes and it doesn't happen.
Based on they're record and they're love of anniversary, Sleeping Beauty should come in Summer or Fall, sometime this year. The third one (if there is a third one) could be any of them or maybe a 4K release of signature release already "out of the vault" like they did with Lion King last year.

Beauty and the Beast would make a good choice for a 4K restoration if they won't do Aladdin this year (or even Sleeping Beauty). I might even bother upgrading to 4K if the restoration for BATB was improved.

Yes, BatB in 4K with the original colors would be awesome! But I think they will do Aladdin next.

If I already own the Diamond Edition in my Movies Anywhere account and I buy the Signature Edition, will it replace the version I already own including it's bonus features, or will I have both versions in my account separately each with their own unique bonus features and restorations?

You'll have both. Same for Peter Pan and Lady And The Tramp. Previous to those, the old Diamond Edition digital copies automatically updated to the new Signature Collection releases, unfortunatley that is no longer the case.

Wow! I have to say I was pleasently surprised at how good "The Little Mermaid" looks in this new Signature Collection version! It looks better than ever! The colors and the quality are the best of all the versions so far! And I love that you can pause it without having that annoying constant musical interlude that the Diamond Edition had!

Just to clarify, the new restoration isn't just for the 4K disc? It's used on the new Blu-Ray disc as well?
If so, I might pick this up although the Target edition leaves much to be desired. The color of Ariel's tail is inconsistent on the cover, being all blue, yet they keep the very top part green. Scuttle is, surprisingly, on the spine of the inside cover and they've used the cheapest clipart image they could have found. The gallery book might excite me more but a lot of those pics are also included in the Illustrated Classics line of books they have now. And of course, no disc art on the Blu-Ray disc.
