This might be a very dumb question...But what if I have a PS3 but don't have an HD TV. Will I be able to watch the movie in its highest definition or will the quality take a dive?

I'm glad they're including the bonus DVD with the blu-ray, but I'll probably be getting the DVD set anyway. Most of the features I probably want to rewatch like the Sleeping Beauty walk thru, the making of, deleted songs aren't on the bonus DVD for the blu-ray.

One new feature I keep growing more and more curious about is the restoring of the soundtrack and how it's going to sound on the DVD and blu-ray. Yesterday, I decided to first listen to my recording of the complete Tchaikovsky ballet, and then the movie soundtrack, and thought of an interesting comparison. I was surprised hearing the film soundtrack, and just how every piece of music in the film uses the ballet's themes and melodies throughout. Many of the ballet themes I noticed are also used for appearances of certain characters: Bluebird and the Garland Waltz for Aurora, Prince Florimund's Hunting Party music for Phillip, the Lilac Fairy and Silver Fairy themes for the fairies, and Carabosse's theme and the Puss In Boots and White Cat dance for Maleficent.

In a way, Sleeping Beauty seems like a really long Fantasia segment with vocals and words. Like Fantasia, it takes a piece of classical music, and arranges the main melodies from the classical pieces to correspond and fit their animation and the story they try to tell.

The movie will look just the same as a normal DVD but even without the HD it's still great for the Blu-Ray extras

No, the point of Blu-ray is to provide high definition audio & video to the home media consumer. There's a very vocal minority of BD consumers who don't want to see anything on the main disc but the feature presentation in order to ensure maximum quality (with a ... t-type approach). There are certainly folks who are already convinced that a 50 GB BD is not enough room for a reference-quality presentation of quite long films featuring lots of camera movement, special effects, CGI---like the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings films. (Everyone on the internet is an expert.)

Short answer: Now.
Matt wrote:That's really a dumb idea if you look at it. You still have to get a Blu-Ray player to view the bonus features.
Yeah, well---it is a Blu-ray release, after all. Folks who own BD players get a free DVD copy of the film. Folks without BD players who buy the BD set for themselves...well, they could be making a mistake, they might be making the purchase as a gift---there's even the possibility they're Disney Movie Rewards addicts who need the point premium one gets for Disney BD purchases. But if they buy the BD intending to get a player at a later date, they get a copy of the movie to enjoy immediately. Not sure what makes this "dumb"...

Tim, your post just made me think of something. What if Sleeping Beauty had no speaking in it. What if it was just a drawn out Fantasia segment? Would you still like it just as much?

I'm probably going to get my copy of "Sleeping Beauty" at Best Buy, because that is usually where I shop. I don't think the lithographs that they are offering look that great. Hopefully Best Buy will have a pretty good gift with purchase when you buy it in the store on the first day. Do you guys think they will have retailer exclusives the day you purchase the DVD/Blu-Ray too, or do you think those will only be offered on pre-orders.

They did for other Platinum Editions, I don't see why they wouldn't for SB. Just hoping there not make-up kits and plastic jewels (I don't need that stuff to make me look good  ).

That's what I was thinking too. But I'd really love if they has something cool of Maleficent.

Ah, so it's more about the visual and audio then all the extra bonus features. I guess because when I first saw advertisements for blu-ray, they were all "IT CAN FIT 5 TIMES MORE THAN A DVD!" which lead me to wonder why they would need 3 extra discs.

It might look a little better than the DVD, but it would be very hard to tell the difference between the two.

Anyway if you have a PS3 you should, in my opinion, pickup the Blu-ray release. That way when you replace your TV with a HDTV you will already have the movie in HD. Plus like yamiiguy posted you can take advantage of the Blu-ray extras even without a HDTV.

For those of you in the UK wondering about the UK blu ray release. It will be just like the US one, 3 discs, the 3rd being a standard DVD copy. See UK Announcement thread in international for more details.
