Deco King, don't you think the peddler woman's visage, which scared so many children in it's premiere, and still does today, should be saved as a surprise? I think it cleverly puts the apple on the cover, along with the witch, but keeping the witch mysterious.

Chernabog_Rocks, I, and many others, love to look at the covers for a long time. If we like the art, that is. But sometimes I vene look at it a lot even if it's not that great, because I like looking at art.

And that's another thing. We all love Disney's animated films for their art, right? So we love looking at Disney art. Right. So the cover is another example of this Disney art we love, so we want to look at it, and we want it to look good.

I love "The Second Star to the Right" but it doesn't mean I'm going to listen to every version out there simply because it's "The Second Star to the Right."

Likewise, with Disney DVD cover art, I don't feel the need to stare lovingly at it and admire the glossy finish just because it's Disney. Others can do so if they want, I won't stop them.

Yes, but you have to admit that even you like classy, artsy and tasteful cover art. The fact that you don't consider it as important as the content of the DVD (which is how i feel as well) is a different story.

I agree that it's the content of the actual Blu Ray/DVD inside the outer packaging that really counts but I do think the cover should reflect that content more than it currently does!

Totally off topic I'm looking forward to another Witch arriving on Blu Ray - also in October - the Wicked Witch of The West she is another favourite Witch of mine!

I missed out buying Snow White when it was first released so I am looking forward to this being re-released so I can add it to my collection.

You're missing my point.

Disney Duster said that just because the DVD cover is Disney, that we'll enjoy looking at it and want it to look good.

And I gave the example of "The Second Star to the Right." It's a Disney song I enjoy, but just because it's Disney doesn't mean I'll enjoy every version of it out there.

Thus, just because a DVD cover is Disney doesn't mean I have to enjoy or care what it looks like. Others can, I won't stop them. I'll save my enjoyment for the actual movie.

I admit, at times there are some DVD covers (Disney or non-Disney) that catch my eye and make me interested in the film. The best example I have is Laura, a film noir from 20th Century Fox that I was only vaguely familiar with before it came to DVD in 2005 and the haunting poster-art-turned-cover-art caught my eye. But I won't sit around and examine every little minute detail and analyze whether or not it's what a Disney movie deserves as a cover.

I care about the Disney films as what they are. Films. I'm not going to sit around and stare at the DVD cover, even if other people find enjoyment in it.

You're automatically assuming every Disney fan likes Disney animated films because of its art, and that everyone should care that the DVD cover accurately represents it. To not care about something as (IMO) inconsequential as DVD covers, apparently in your mindset it means we don't care about Disney artwork at all except in the film itself. Bullsh!t. It's a frickin' DVD cover! There is such a thing as a Disney fan who doesn't rank the DVD cover art as the #1 reason they enjoy Disney, and you're making it seem like a federal case to say "I don't care about the DVD cover" by claiming those who say it don't care about any artwork outside the film.

Honestly, I gave up on having nice cover art long ago (back in the VHS days) so in the end it doesn't really matter to me. Although I think they have actually improved since then, I'd prefer they use screencaps than hire the artists they do for this stuff.

To me, the most important part is the movie inside.

When you said "We all love Disney's animated films for their art, right?", that was the sweeping generalisation, because of "we all." My "There is such a thing..." is basically saying "Don't generalise all Disney fans like that, especially regarding something like cover art."

I know that the disc inside contains something I want to buy, I know what that something looks like. I don't need the cover to entice me personally, but I understand its need to get the attention of other potential buyers as well as fans who are interested in the cover. I understand its necessity to look something like the original film (cause, after all, you can't advertise a DVD of Star Trek and have a picture of Battlestar Galactica), but from my perspective as someone who knows what they want and will buy it, I do not consider the cover art to be important to me and me alone. Do you see my point of view now? You do? I know you do.

I'm sure Disney could go the Anchor Bay route and make a cover that looks like the DVD in a paper bag and people will still buy it. Hell, I bought it because it was the only available version the FYE had for the Director's Cut when I finally decided to pick it up, despite it having been released like, a million times:

Back to the topic of dvd covers, didn't the vhs ones have Hidden Mickey's on them supposedly? If the dvd covers had those then I might just spend more time looking at the cover trying to find them

Also, Duster, why all the panic over *this* cover? Out of all the dvd releases, Live Action, DTV's, T.V Shows, and all the other DAC's why make such an outcry over Snow Whites? There's been terrible cover art for some (maybe a lot) of the other DAC's yet I don't recall you making as big of a deal out of it.

Is it because it's a Princess film? If so that's pure crap, same if the reason is because Snow White "Was the first film and thus deserves/needs a really good cover" that's also a crap reason. The fact it's a Princess film should mean nothing in the long run, and just because it was the first DAC doesn't mean it should be given some big royal treatment and held high on a pedastel above the others

Now I'm not saying those two reasons are your reasons for making a deal out of this, just trying to point out in advance why those two reasons are crappy ones. Not trying to put words in your mouth

The way I see it, if the art is crappy it's crappy. It doesn't make the film any less good than it is, or make it look bad in any way or make it less of a masterpiece or suggest that the art of the movie is poor. It just means Disney didn't bother too much with a cover. Besides, there's some people out there who might even like the cover for all we know.

But it does sell less copies.

DECO KING, maybe you don't think it's good because it has not been cleaned up yet. It is most obviously not the final version, and we have had previous covers change. Do you like the characters, the poses, and the whole cover's composition? But you just don't like the drawing? If so, the drawing will probably be what changes, okay?

And remember, that witch should have her whole frightening face saved for the movie!

I said we all enjoy Disney's animated films for their art. And we do. Everyone here is who I meant by we all, and everyone here at least partly likes the animated films because of the quality art. They wouldn't like the film if it had crappy art.

The point is, you complained about us talking about the art so much, and I explained why it was so important.

I wondered why people didn't think the drawn art was important when they liked Disney's drawn art so much, and I have found out now that some people just don't care. In this world, people don't care about many things. You have said yourself you're not thebiggest Disney fan...so...that's you now I see.

So I wish I knew everyone else's reasons for not caring about the cover art when they love the films for their art. Of course 'I just don't care' isn't so much a reason as all you can say, just all you can say, 'cause it's true, but, that's just all you can say.

Chernabog, I am not the one who made all the fuss about the cover you are talking about. I think that is Deco King you mean.

I LOVE the Blu-ray cover with the witch below the mirror. It has all the characters, and beautiful, interesting composition, and cool ideas.

But I do agree that, as Disney's most important film, it deserves a really good cover. This is just undeniable. Of any of the films to get a good cover, this one has to be it. Even if it's not the most popular, not thought as the best, it is the most important film to the company, as well as the most respected (officially from/within Disney), and the most deserving of good treatment.

There's no reason for a crappy cover. To argue would only be giving crappy reasons yourself! Now, crappiness is opinion as far as composition, but not drawing, as we know on-modelness, as well as just good drawing when we see it, and as it stands we know all the characters that need to be drawn better are the dwarfs, maybe the prince and the queen, and a lot of people say Snow White but I'm an artist and I say she's okay so maybe she's just barely good enough. She's not drawn crappily, is the point. But if this film got a badly drawn cover, or there was anything else showing no effort, that would indeed be a disgrace to the film, to Walt, and to Disney's legacy.

But as it stands, the only thing not good about it is the off-modelness and it needs some cleaning up, better air-brushing and better done effects.
