John Lasseter is such a weak little miserable caterpillar for not giving hand drawn animation a chance. Although on record, I'm glad hand drawn shorts live on. In fact, I wish Disney make a new Chip 'N' Dale cartoon. I can dream, can I?

Unfortunately, there are no 2D films. And it looks like not anytime soon. What should happen is someone at the studio should try to pitch to John a new 2D film, but slowly. Catch him on a good day. A 2D film for release in like 2020, maybe John would listen.

It's been an up-down year for CGI animation though. You have 2 hit sequeal/prequeal:Despicable me 2, Monsters U, one hit original film: The Croods, then you have 2 flops: Epic & Turbo. Both Epic & Turbo prove that even big CGI films can flop, Like Rise of the Guardians last November.

Tangled/Wreck it Ralph showed for the first time that they can compete with their rivals in the CGI market. Frozen could be the first Disney Animated film ever to win the Oscar for Best Animated Film, also for music! They're may be no 2D films on the horizon from WDAS, but they have the best CGI films coming up. And unlike their rivals, all original, no sequeals/prequeals.

However, that slate could easily change. More than any other Hollywood animation studio, WDAS seems to cancel or prolong projects for ages and in that time frame, a hand-drawn animated film or something with the Paperman technique could certainly be greenlit. But most likely after Bob Iger steps down. After buying up Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, he seems to be a CEO who wants to just make easy, guaranteed mega-blockbusters with brand recognition attached (hell, the only two hand-drawn animated films Mr Iger gave the go-ahead to make had brand names right in the titles).

Also, I wouldn't call Epic a flop. A disappointment, maybe, but $252 million on a $100 million budget is nothing scoff at. Especially considering William Joyce productions can't seem to pass a certain threshold at the box-office (why? I have no idea, the man is an insanely talented illustrator and one of the most imaginative minds working in animation today).

It's not out yet, but I somehow wouldn't really count on Frozen winning the Best Animated Film Oscar. It might go to Monsters University (even though that might not happen and it actually could go to a non-Disney/Pixar film, not to mention no Pixar sequel, except Toy Story 3, took home the gold).

It seems as of lately WDAS has picked animated projects to stick with. I remember pre-Tangled they considered doing Mort & King of the Elves, but Tangled changed everything. Marvel's Big Hero 6 I knew was a lock because of the Marvel brand. That's the hottest property in Hollywood now. Be it obscure or not. anything that has to do with Marvel will sell tickets.



Zootopia, they are just so happy about that film, they announced it 3 years out, less than a month when Blue Sky Disney leaked it. At D23 they showed a title logo & multiple concept art pics & even names of the main characters! They are so excited about Zootopia they just had to announce it years out.


Giants will continue the fairy-tale trend post Tangled/Frozen. It has not been officially announced yet but alot of the story details were leaked via BleedingCool. The only why I see this film not getting the greenlight is if Frozen underpreforms.


As for Moana, we can only hope they do it in the Paperman-style. If they do, that could be a game-changer right there. Dean wellins film is only an idea, no title or story has been leaked. Plus these films are 4-5 years out, so by this time things could change.

But WDAS is locked & set from Big hero thru Giants.


Also regarding Epic, while it may not be a huge-flop it is the lowest grossing film in Blue Sky Animation history. It's $252.4million worldwide gross is lower than 2005 Robots $260.7million. I'm sure they expected Epic to preform better than that.

If Frozen does not win the best animated film oscar, than I don't see WDAS winning one anytime soon. Big Hero 6 will not win over an original pixar film "The Good Dinosaur" or even How to train your Dragon 2. You also have Boxtrolls too. Hopefully Frozen can win Best Song.

Tangled didn't affect Mort, that was Terry Pratchett being difficult in negotiations for the rights to the book and eventually Disney walked away. King of the Elves has replaced The Snow Queen in development hell it seems, it could make a brilliant WDAS film if they ever get a breakthrough with the story.

Well if you ask me, Terry Pratchett is stubborn as P.L. Travers.

Well Pratchett is arguably even more stubborn as, unlike with Mary Poppins, Disney were not able to get their hands on Mort. Which is a shame, its a very good book and it would have been interesting to see what Musker & Clements would have done with it.

Well, we do know that Kathleen is all for creativity. And hand-drawn animation is a form of creativity.

So is CG animation. And she is now in charge of a company that has really been a driving force in making CG animation such a huge component of modern film-making.

All I would say is that its too early to pin your hopes on someone like Kathleen Kennedy leading a hand-drawn revolution, Iger still has a few years left and there are a number of potential candidates who could succeed him, including some already in senior management positions at Disney.

Well, I'm hoping it's not Jay Rasulo. He's a greedy dirtbag. And I bet he despises hand drawn and Mickey Mouse.
