The missed opportunities are all the more disappointing because there is no chance of a better edition coming anytime soon. Disney will only release a title as popular as this an event. So, could this be the last time we get to see the movie on some physical home media format? I really, really hope the industry doesn't go into full-on streaming or download

.
I hope not, but who knows? A lot can change in 8 years. Just think back to how differnat things were 8 years ago? In 2003, DVD was still king and 2 disc DVD's were still all the rage. So, things do seem to change. Personally, I'm going to hold on to both my 2004 DVD AND this new Blu-ray untill one or both die on me.
jpanimation wrote:Oh wow, I haven't had the time to look at all the bonus features yet but seriously Disney, you didn't even include the original trailers? Dropping original music videos, trailers, publicity galleries, and throwing what little bonus features you did have on that nightmare of an OS you call Virtual Vault is just pathetic (speaking of Virtual Vault, I'm having the same problem starting it up as Luke did and all I'm getting is a black screen - so without Virtual Vault running properly, the extras are even more pathetic). Not to mention they put an important supplement like the original September 1992 story outline exclusively on the iPad app (what about people who don't have any idevices?), they have the missing clouds in the actual feature presentation and it begins to seem like they didn't give it their all, did they?
Having watched both "Pride of The Lion King" and "The Lion King: A Memoir - Don Hahn", I felt like they didn't even begin to touch on certain things (many voice actors were not even mentioned) and that WAY too much time was spent talking about the Broadway show. Color me disappointed and worried what they'll cut on Lilo & Stitch's Blu-ray release (I never got the Special Edition DVD). I'm definitely going to be holding onto my Aladdin Platinum Edition DVD, as it has wonderful supplements and I have a feeling that none of them will make it (atleast, not without the Virtual Vault monstrosity).
Still, the menu is nicely organized, attractively designed and quick loading.
I ended up picking up the Blu-ray and I'm happy about some stuff, but more disapointed about other things. The Virtual Vault thing is crap, pure and simple. Even if I cared to set my Blu-ray player up to the net (I'm not intrested), the VV never works anyway! My feeling is, it's a s good as not even being there.
To that point, I'm holding on to my 2004 DVD's AND this new Blu-ray for my fuller and more compleate collection. I'm getting the feeling that would be the case with any DAC I could ever by that I had on DVD and am really seeing the majority of them as add on to what I ahve already rather then replacments, the way I'm sure some Bly-ray geeks Disney see them.
I also won't buy every DAC on Blu-ray. Case in point, that "Fox and the Hound" release was horrid. It lacked in the extras department (which the DVD actually was better in) and putting the DTV film on the same disc actually offended me. I'm 100% not buying old DTV films on Blu-ray. Those films are lucky I even own them on DVD!
Anyway, viewing the new documentaries found on TLK Blu-ray as additions to what is on the 2004 DVD, I enjoyed them. And I enjoy having the film on Blu-ray disc. But my top reason for that isn't the HD suprise, suprise, but rather my thought is one day, me and my wife will start having kids. When we do, I don't think I want them touching my old DVD's, so I'll feel much safer if they handle the Blu-rays instead!

I really think you don't realize what you are missing not having your Blu-ray player hooked to the internet.
Besides the stupid Disney VV stuff you are missing out on a lot of BD Live events that can only be enjoyed with the internet hook-up.
For instance, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" had a special BD Live showing of the film with the director and cast sitting in and you could talk with them, and ask questions, and there were some great out-takes that were shown after that film showing.
"The Watchmen" director Zack Snyder hosted a special showing of the film on BD Live with members of the cast. Some great insight was given in the making of the film, and the out-takes were irreplaceable.
There are a lot of films that offer extra stuff on BD Live, and it makes it totally worthwhile to have your player hooked with the internet. I have an Insignia Blu-ray with wireless connection to the internet and I wouldn't trade it for anything else out there.
Disney can take their Video Vault, Second Screen, or whatever they want to call it, and put it where the sun doesn't shine. I was hoping Disney would wise-up and join the BD revolution but sadly they won't.

Anyone have any Excedrin?
You are now connected to Patrick from Amazon.com.
Me:Hi. I ordered "The Lion King" on Blu-ray on Monday morning with two-day shipping. It doesn't look like I'm going to get it until tomorrow. That's three days (four if you count Monday).14:42:01
Me:My order didn't even ship until yesterday around 6 pm, almost 36 hours after I placed the order.14:42:31
Patrick:Hello, Brad. My name is Patrick. I'll be happy to help you today.14:42:50
Me:Thank you, Patrick.14:42:57
Patrick:You’re very much welcome, Brad.14:43:22
Patrick:Let me go ahead and check this on my system.14:43:31
Me:Thank you. I've used Amazon since 1999, and this is the first problem I've had. I've usually received my packages on time, and they always ship promptly.14:44:32
Patrick:Thanks for holding, Brad. Upon checking here the estimated delivery date of your order is October 6 and I see that it's already on the process and you could wait for it now or later.14:46:11
Me:Right. As I said, it did ship, but a day and a half after I placed the order. Why, then, am I paying for two-day shipping?14:46:47
Me:My order should have arrived yesterday or today.14:46:58
Patrick:If you haven't receive you order up until October 8, kindly give us a call again so that we can address this appropriately.14:47:03
Me:Patrick, October 8?14:47:12
Me:Why am I paying for two-day shipping? I placed the order on October 3.14:47:22
Me:That's a bit ridiculous, if you ask me.14:47:32
Patrick:Yup, I understand how you feel Brad. Let me go ahead and check this further.14:48:15
Me:Thanks.14:48:47
Patrick:You're welcome, Brad.14:49:07
Patrick:Thanks for holding, Brad. Upon researching further the order is already in transit and you can wait up until today to arrive at your doorstep. You don't have to worry Brad. I you haven't received your package up until today you can give us a call. We are here to back you up, Brad.14:51:41
Me:We know thanks to the tracking that it's not going to arrive until tomorrow, though.14:52:40
Me:And this wouldn't be an issue if the package was shipped promptly after I placed the order, not a day and a half afterward. It's not like I ordered a scarce title; I ordered a new release.14:53:30
Me:I have been a loyal Amazon customer for twelve years, Patrick. Don't make me change my mind.14:53:56
Patrick:Yup, Brad. I understand how you feel. I know that you are one of our valued customers. I'm still positive Brad that you can receive the item today because it is already in transit.14:56:39
Me:It's 2:57 pm my time. The estimated delivery date is tomorrow. The package was last tracked in Phoenix. I really don't see it arriving here today.14:58:04
Me:I think that for $7.98 (more than 1/3 the cost of what I bought), two-day shipping should be a little bit more... I don't know... "two-day."14:58:40
Patrick:You don't have to worry Brad. You're one of our valued customers. 14:59:20
Me:I really feel like I'm being given the run-around here, Patrick. Do I have any more customer service avenues?14:59:45
Patrick:To compensate for you and as a one time exception I could give you a $5 promo to you.14:59:47
Patrick:You can use that for your future purchase in amazon.15:00:51
Me:I really don't want an MP3/Instant Video credit.15:00:58
Patrick:$5 promo is for the items sold and fulfilled by amazon. Once you placed the order it will automatically be deducted.15:02:07
Me:I can take that, if it's for anything I order from Amazon.15:02:34
Patrick:Yes, anything that is sold and fulfilled by amazon.15:03:18
Me:I'd appreciate that. It would help a lot.15:03:36
Patrick:Thank you, Brad.15:04:04
Patrick:Is there anything else I can help you with today? 15:04:16
Me:Thank you.15:04:16
Me:No, that would be all. Have a great day.15:04:24
Patrick:You’re very much welcome, Brad.15:04:31
Patrick:You too.15:04:39
Patrick:Thank You for visiting Amazon! We hope to see you again.

You're one of our valued customers, we just drop the ball on your order...
Can't believe Patrick only gave you $5 off next purchase. The $7 you paid for two-day shipping should have been refunded, at the very least.
I'm really annoyed with Amazon for this, and also cancelling my pre-order of Born This Way (without telling me?) but I paid for Amazon Prime so I might as well use it until the subscription runs out. I just have to put up with shoddy customer service til then.

Well, I managed to get the regular 2 disc combo pack at Target. When I was checking out, for a brief second, I was sort of afraid that the $5 coupon would not work, and that I would have to get the 4-disc pack instead. I only wish that the initial/sale price was $19.99...

You could've price matched Best Buy.

^Yeah, I could have. But Target was closer in terms of distance. That, and I didn't want to drive all the way up to Easton to go to Target.

I agree about that BD accessory. But I am talking about a special one-night-only BD Live presentation that you had to have a code to get into and watch. What you are talking about is something the normal nerds get to see whenever.
You have to pay attention to announcements that come with your Blu-ray about special presentations that you need a code for and they are a one-time thing.
I am looking forward to the "Harry Potter 7.2" release because I am sure that we are going to get a special "one-night-only' showing of the entire four-hours plus of the movie - parts 1 and 2 - and if that doesn't happen I will be very disappointed. But it is supposed to happen so I am anticipating November 11 very much.

So.... given that the diamond edition of Beauty and the Beast seems closer to the theatrical/VHS version in terms of color, does anyone believe that the restoration job for the DE release of The Lion King seems closer to the theatrical/VHS release (save for the crocodiles), or that the restoration job is more botched up than the DVD was?
To be honest, I wouldn't know entirely because I haven't watched the VHS since 2002 or the year after, before my folks and I got The Lion King on DVD back in 2003.
All I know is that the colors seem a bit more vibrant on the Blu-ray, particularly during the sequence when Timon and Pumbaa make their entrance.

Wait, when did they fix this? Last I checked, the Diamond Edition used the same altered Special Edition colors found on the Platinum Edition, only boosted to be more vibrant. The unaltered original colors - the ones you'd find on the original CAPS files - were last used in
The Princess and the Frog's trailer:

The colors were altered, or "corrected" as Roger Allers calls it, but not nearly as drastically as
Beauty and the Beast was. There are some orange/red hues added and an overall warmer pallet is used throughout but it isn't enough that it alters the mood of the scenes. As for it being botched, the missing clouds and the missing blue castle logo are really the only problems I have with this transfer.

I received my trilogy set from Amazon today!
I'm somewhat concerned about the quality of the packaging. The drum is visually a nice idea but it's just cardboard. Maybe it's just mine but it's somewhat difficult to fit the top back on after opening it. I'm sure it will start to wear soon. I also don't like the the ... booklet? the discs are in. Not only is it difficult to tell which disc it where but it's made of paper will very easily rip if a slot is opened too far.
I also don't really understand virtual vault. I'd much rather just watch these 3 minute segments without a buffering time.
Overall though, I really like this release.

Those are only quirks I came across.

Thanks Uncle Remus! I decided I didn't need the 3D copy, so I opted to get the DVD/Bluray combo from Toys R Us for $20. It came with this huge poster--it's very nice, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm gonna do with it haha!

it's common knowledge that the 2010 master is a good mix of the two. it's not broken so they fixed it only partially. the shot in the trailer was mistakenly added

I don't have time to scrub all 52 pages of this thread, but I can't be the only one who's miffed at the changed Disney logo/deleted Frank Wells dedication, can I?
Is nothing sacred? Were they afraid people would return the movie if it didn't have the CGI castle logo? Ridiculous.

The inability of Disney to retain their original logos pisses me off to no end. They couldn't even do it with the DVD, where the black and orange logo was used, instead of the blue and white one. At least that one had the Frank Wells dedication intact. Though I do think that was relegated to the back of the end credits now, wasn't it?
And if they must feel the need to add the newest and shiniest logo, then let the original movie, with the original logo (whether that's RKO, Buena Vista or the white castle on the blue background) follow right after that. Universal Studios leaves the Paramount logo intact for the Hitchcock movies they own, so Disney surely must be able to do it with their own movies as well.

Trust me, the CGI castle logo drove me crazy when they put it on The Lion King, too. What gets me mad further is that Disney seems completely unwilling to use anything but the usual "When You Wish Upon a Star" score with the CG logo. In 1994, Allers and Minkoff decided not to use the usual WDP music over the opening logo for a reason! It doesn't set the right mood for the movie for the movie you are about to see. The same reason Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis, etc. didn't use the usual "When You Wish..." music.
And abrupt sound cut to birds chirping after the Mickey Mouse logo made me facepalm.
