From the personal collection of Atlantis: The Lost Empire director Gary Trousdale, this is a set of 8 pitch posters created by Walt Disney Imagineering for a proposal to rework the Submarine Voyage attraction at Disneyland into an Atlantis Expedition inspired by the 2001 motion picture. Imagineers mocked up the proposed attraction at Disneyland in one of the original 1959 Submarines parked in the dock area and hidden from guests. These 8 posters were used in the preliminary development and mock-up of the attraction, which was never realized.

Next year’s the 25th anniversary. There’s rumors that Kida and Milo are getting new LE dolls for the anniversary, too, although these will likely be D23 exclusives.

Frankly, I didn`t like the Anniversary logo at first, but now it`s grown on me. And it`s nice to see how Disney are giving Atlantis some recognition, despite it`s unfortunate placement in the Disney canon.

I din't expect much attention to Atlantis because it seems that they are only taking seriously the anniversaries of the most popular classics but I have to admit that I'm surprised about this recognition. It seems that they are going to release a doll set exclusive from D23 even when the first Kida didn't sell well.

I'm also pleasantly surprised.

Makes me wonder if the prospect of LA remakes for this and Treasure Planet are being fished. Seeing the success of "Lilo & Stitch" and seeing how they're out of Walt-era and Renaissance properties to harvest, they might actually be hoping that millennial nostalgia for seeing this on DVD might get them through the next little bit.

Perhaps, but the original Lilo & Stitch was a bigger hit than both of them. And despite how I love both Atlantis and Treasure Planet, it was more mandatory that Stitch was receiving a live action treatment. And I`m seriously doubting that those two other movies are going to receive ones.

Once upon a time, I would have thought they were out of the question for the reasons you listed. But with Disney running out of viable options, and especially with their Star Wars and Marvel offerings turning belly-up at the box office, they might be willing to try anything. Which might be why they're trying to generate hype for their neglected movies that have gained some following in the time since their launch.

Alright, fair enough.

I don't think that they are going to risk money making a live-action movie. The target of this film is the nostalgic audience that saw the movie when they were kids so I don't think that they are going to take such a risk seeing that other movies with the same target like Masters of the universe are flopping at the box office.

"Masters of the Universe" belongs to a very similar genre and broadly tries the same nostalgic pitches, and so I'm sure everyone at Disney is watching the performance of that movie and making notes.

Even so, there's a twenty-year gap between the two properties, and so the demographics don't quite line up. (It also didn't hurt that "Masters of the Universe" was appallingly bad. Its plummet is hardly some tragic miscarriage of justice.)

Anyways, I'm not campaigning for or predicting an "Atlantis" remake. Just speculating.

But Masters of the Universe despite that is older than Atlantis is still selling toys and merchandise. The franchise is alive in certain way that Atlantis is not. This movie is reduced to only be remembered my Disney when it's a special anniversary so people are not so used to remember it like they do with MOTU (there are even memes of the original tv show everywhere). So if this IP is having trouble to give benefits to the studio I think that Atlantis would have even more problems.

Trying hard to find a connection between MotU and Atlantis, but.... Nope. He-Man is a TV fantasy series from the 70s or 80s, and MotU is a Thor-esque attempted retelling. I don't connect Atlantis or TP to either of those things?

I think they've looked at Atlantis possibly for a live-action film. With someone like Tom Holland as the star (perhaps with Zendaya as Kida?), I could sort of envision it. Atlantis, since it wasn't a successful film, they could get away with taking more leeway with as long as they keep some of the names, the general design of Milo and Kida, and the famous scene of Kida merging with the Heart which was the most memorable thing about the film. Sci-fi can do better in live-action whereas it's much more risky in animation. Who knows, but it's something they could attempt if they watched the budget and didn't go crazy spending like they did with Snow White.

Tbh, I think they could make restart and make new versions of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland, it's been a decade+ since those films. I'd like a Cinderella more like the animated film with the music. A straight retelling of Sleeping Beauty could work, too, since Maleficent was very much its own thing.
