Very very nice screencaps. I thought the original DVD looked fine for a non-anamorphic disc, but this one is obviously more crisp and has less grain.

1.66:1 or 1.85:1?!?!?!

Does anybody know if Mulan was framed at 1.66:1 or 1.85:1?

The pan-and-scan edition on the Gold Collection/Limited Issue disc
appears to be cropping off quite a bit of picture...

With the new transfer, are they opening up the matting, or are they blowing it up closer and lopping off the sides like they did for Brother Bear...(I'm still scratching my head on that one...)

All the modern Disney films utilize the 1.66:1 CAPS system, though some filmmakers prefer the 1.85:1 framing, I believe.

Those are really great screencaps! I really want this DVD! Well, not the Region 3 one, but yeah, you guys know what I mean. I don't know if I'll be getting it, though. I hate having to ask my mom to take me places because you can't drive here until you're 18! I guess I could get a Japanese Region 2 copy since I can just walk to Jusco. Okay, I'm rambling. The end.

I'm quite looking forward to this one. I still haven't seen Mulan in its entirety, so ... I'm really eager to. I think it could wind up as one of my favorites, perhaps.

Thanks for the screencaps! The transfer looks incredible (then again, would we expect anything less nowadays?), and it'll be nice to see Mulan in its full glory since both of my VHS copies are terribly worn out.

can hardly wait to have the DVD in my mail...
Would have loved, however, to also have the Vanessa Mae-music video of Reflection on the disc.

This is a picture of the Spanish singer of "Reflection":

Here's some pictures of her in a tv novel she made where she played triplets:

The reason I'm posting these pictures is because as stated in the Mulan review, she wasn't credited. And as the review said, her name is Lucero.

Awesome review as usual, Luke. Although it doesn't sound like the end-all, be-all edition I would have liked, it still looks pretty incredible. Definitely looking forward to the deleted scenes (22 minutes?!) and behind-the-scenes stuff. I am disappointed, however by the apparent lack of voice talent and music content. Plus, no trailer?? IMO, it was one of the best cut trailers in recent Disney history, and the WIP version was even more interesting.

By the way, was there any mention of Stephen Schwartz originally doing Mulan's songs (before he got kicked off for working on Dreamworks' Prince of Egypt)? I've always been interested in hearing what direction he would've taken, but I suspect they've conveniently forgotten about that.

[quote]This interesting piece covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time, showing some clips from other Disney films in other languages and then focusing on the filmmakers' efforts to make sure the Chinese version of Mulan was done right[quote]

Heh, that's kind of interesting, because I remember reading that the film absolutely tanked in China. It was only one of a few western movies that the government allowed to be shown that year (actually, 1999), but apparently many people there thought it was too westernized.

For anyone interested, here's a few looks at the Japanese "Value Pack" consisting of Mulan + Mulan II (due out 12/17):

http://club.buenavista.jp/disney/produc ... sp?cid=544
http://www.jbook.co.jp/product.asp?product=2491047

Rather ugly, in my opinion, but I'll probably be picking it up so I can have Mulan II in my hands early ^_^ Also, the Japanese edition of Mulan features a few additional music videos:

I'll Make a Man Out of You (Cantonese Version, as opposed to the Mandarin one that's on the US version, although that one is included too) - Jackie Chan
Reflection (Mandarin Version) - Coco Lee
True to Your Heart (Spanish Version) - Christian

Looks like the Raven song is out, though, which may be a good thing. Don't know if there are any other differences, though.

Luke, your review makes this sound like it's Lion King Plantinum Edition all over again. No biggie though, the massive deleted scenes, backstage disney and the mandarin dubtrack will still be worth it

Another great UDreview jam packed to the gills! And more than 2 weeks early!

It's interesting to compare the more muted naturalistic color scheme of Mulan to the technicolor razzle dazzle of the Aladdin one. Mmm that R1 America disc having 4 soundtracks can reach a combined listeningship of about between two to three thousand million listeners! (I guess they didn't include Portuguese cus that's for the R4 America one.) I will have to consult with HE on this one too  mmmm Mulan multiple regions quintuple dipping mmmmm nee so many music videos all over the place aaaaa
