I shed no tears over Maleficent 3 or Jungle Book 2. (I can't even remember that a Queen of Hearts movie was on the table.) If JB2 was going to happen, it was going to go into production shortly after the 2016 remake before Neel Sethi got too old, but they grafted Favreau to the Lion King remake, and he just never had a spare moment since.

Even if the writing for Aladdin 2 was on the wall, it's still a shame. I think there was real potential. It also would have been nice to help keep Mena Massoud in the public eye.

There's a production grid out there claiming an Aladdin sequel starts shooting next year, but considering we haven't heard anything about the project getting revived in the trades, it's probably not accurate.

As a mild coincidence, just this morning I saw a Disney fanpage reporting that Aladdin 2 was set to go into production here in a few weeks sporting a poster that was very obviously AI generated. It does seem to suggest that online sources recognize this as an item of interest for Disney fans, just not for Disney itself.

I was halfway hoping that Mufasa's surprise resilience at the box office would motivate Disney to give this one a chance, but the Disney remake storm just has no silver linings.

I have no doubt it will happen eventually. It's an easy billion sitting right there--this is Disney we're talking about.
