And judging by that, Frozen (just over 49 million tickets) is still trailing behind Aladdin (52 million), Finding Nemo (56 million) and The Lion King (almost 75 million).

Of-course, I'm not taking into account the older classics, since they were re-released endlessly.
I agree wholeheartedly. So this would put Frozen in 4th place there.
5th. I forgot "Toy Story 3" with 52 million. :)

And of-course I'm referring here only to Disney Pixar films :)

Glad to see we're getting back on topic here... funny how this thread turned into such a debate about Anna punching Hans!

And I honestly never meant it to!

Anyway, does anyone here think that giving the film the title "Frozen" rather than keeping to a more traditional fairytale-style name (even though it made a bit of a departure from the story that inspired it, The Snow Queen) contributed to it's success? Would it have been as successful under the "Snow Queen" title?

I don't think it was, it was the word of mouth and curiousity of how Frozen was great that the film made the money it did.

Personally, I would've preferred that they stick with "The Snow Queen" for this, and with "Rapunzel" for Tangled. Snow White, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast did great and they kept their original fairy tale names. What if Snow White was "Poisoned", TLM was "Speechless" and BATB was "Cursed"? Sheeeesh!!!!

I think I read a comment on here that titled BatB "Hairy"

I actually like that Frozen is not titled "the Snow Queen" because The Snow Queen is still relatively recent compared to most of the other stories Disney's adapted and can very well be criticized for "changing everything and keeping the title", as George Martin puts it.

Tangled should've stayed "Rapunzel".

I always thought they were saving the title "Frozen" for a Walt Disney biopic.

I’m likely in the minority here on this one, but I’ve got no issue with the adjectival styling of the titles for this film or for Tangled. The studio’s fairy- and folk-tale adaptations have gone further and further afield from the source material as times have changed. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, for all their departures, generally bear more resemblance to the source material than the films of the ‘80s-‘90s renaissance, and the more recent films go even further afield—Frozen, in particular, has so little in common with the story of The Snow Queen as to be unrecognizable as an adaptation of that tale.

Foregoing the debate over which films alter their source material the most...
The market has changed an awful lot in the last quarter century. There are more entertainment options than ever, more competition for our attention and our dollars, with ever-increasing diversification and division in content and target audiences. I think titles like “Tangled” and “Frozen” are pretty amusing, but they connote differently than “Rapunzel” and “The Snow Queen”—they’re less fairy-tale specific, less traditional, less likely to evoke prior associations that cause potential audience to judge content before being exposed to it; they’re more ambiguous, more open to association and interpretation. If the change in titular styling gives one person in ten (or a hundred, or ten thousand) reason to reconsider his or her predisposition *not* to engage with the film, it’s done its job.

Yes, I agree with that. Frozen was hardly similar to the original fairytale "The Snow Queen". But still, they could've picked a title that was more fairytale sounding than "Frozen", or at least one that paid homage to the original source material.

A good replacement title? Aside from The Snow Queen I can't think anything else.

Maybe Frozen Heart? Okay, that's lame but...

Agree that it should of stayed Snow Queen

Though hopefully with Frozen doing so well, they are not going to shy away from more feminine dominate sounding titles anymore.

Even though Snow Queen was written by a guy and everything. Poor Hans C Anderson, your stories don't sound hip enough.

Frozen has now passed Transformers: Dark of the Moon and become the 6th highest grossing movie ever worldwide. It will not pass Iron Man 3, it needs almost another 100 million dollars to pass that Marvel movie.

I wouldn't rule out Iron Man 3 quite yet. Frozen is still going incredibly strong in Japan, and still has the Golden Week holidays coming up starting at the end of this month. Honestly, I think $200M+ for Japan is no longer a pipe dream, and if that happens, it would make enough to surpass Iron Man 3 worldwide.

Nothing would be better, so let's hope that you are right;) I just think that is is highly unlikely that it will actually manage to overthrow Iron Man 3.

I don't think it will be easy. I think we'll have a better idea after the Golden Week holidays in Japan are over. Either way, this has had an impressive run, and that's an understatement.

I haven't seen Frozen yet (gasp!) but it's SOOOOOO popular I'm afraid I'm gonna be disappointed.....that's usually how these things go with me when I'm late to the party.

Then don't watch it thinking about how popular it is. Pretend you never even heard of it and watch it for what it is... a new Disney movie. Form your own opinion about it. Chances are you won't be dissapointed. :)

So the most recent news say that "Frozen" has passed the $400M mark domestically, and is now the 2nd highest grossing film of 2013  . And it's still playing in theaters worldwide! Is there no stopping it? How long will its money streak last? Why is this film doing sooooooo well when others who may be even better didn't? :?

Kudos to the filmmakers... their gamble paid off big! :D

^ Was it really a big gamble, though?

I mean, not accounting the fact that they hastily made the switch from hand-drawn to CG, or that they switched from Alan Menken to the Lopezes (which, in my opinion, was their means of playing safe), Frozen was expected to do so well.

Firstly, they market it as "From the makers of Tangled." And people liked Tangled, so that got the crowds in.

Secondly, snow or no snow, people like to see a move during the holidays that reflects on the "ideal" Winter environment.

Thirdly, 2013, in personal opinion, was an AWFUL year for animation. Very few original films that struck me in the heart (pun intended  ). Frozen was flawless in comparison to most other films. (It wasn't, it just seemed like that.)

Though I will admit that almost no one can see their film making a billion.

Except maybe James Cameron. :P

I think everyone expected it to be a success in the same vein as Tangled--even I was, back when I was hating the movie because of all the changes that had been done to make it more like Tangled--but the fact that it skyrocketed was what was surprising. Also, holiday-themed animated films aren't necessarily guaranteed to do well--Rise of the Guardians...?

I personally don't think Frozen is flawless (no film is), but I do think it's an above average film and that's not just in comparison to how awful most of the animated films released in 2013 were.
