It seems they are. I didn't know it before, but the Pixar Post article about the new poster explained it.

The green banner features a winged-jaguar which according to Mayan mythology was seen as the ruler of the Underworld and a symbol of darkness. The Jaguar is also representative of power and valor and could represent the power to face one's fears or confront one's enemies.

Most films that depict Mexico usually have the stereotypical chihuahua, I am glad that Pixar actually did more research and did a less common scene breed from there. It looks like they might be trying to make sure they do a lot of research into this, and not fall for stereotypical traps.

I am now totally hooked. It also looks in comparison with Book of Life to take place in the 80's or something instead of the 20's.

I wasn't mesmerized by the trailer, to be honest. I found to be really meh. Also, the plot seems quite derivative and formulaic, with cues from Ratatouille and The Princess and the Frog (but at least it has a musician premise, for once).

Plus unlike the Book of Life, there isn't going to be a love story plus the protagonist is a kid. Also the way he goes into the spirit world is not through death, but an alternative way by touching his ancestor's guitar.

Haven't they done that old timey VHS inspirational footage already in Up and also the Incredibles? It looks ok, but it is heavy on the PIXAR cliches.

Every time an artist gets to make a personal film at PIXAR nowadays it's heavy on sentimentality and deals with childhood in the most literal way possible. After Up and Sanjay's super team, again we see our protagonist as a child sitting in front of the tv. Is this how the storytellers at PIXAR see themselves when they have to tell a story?

The Pixar formula has shifted from gimmicks like "the secret life of ...." to a sentimental road trip where everything and everyone has FEELINGS!!! *gasp*.

Color me unimpressed so far.

Wow, they showed more than I thought they would! It looks fantastic. It was already my most anticipated movie of the year, but now even more so.

Well, at least they aren't accusing Disney of Cultural Appropriation again

Rip off claims here are inevitable, I suppose. However no one has seen Coco yet. Other than both featuring a dark haired male protagonist and being centered around Dia de los Muertos, they may not be that similar at all.

It's ironic. Everyone griped about Disney trying to have exclusive rights to Dia de los Muertos when they tried to trademark it. Now it's almost as if they believe Jorge Gutierrez should have exclusive rights to make a Dia de los Muertos movie.

Imo, it reveals a cultural bias of sorts, because in general no one is crying copycat every time a new Christmas movie is released.
