Lasseter during his speech in Tokyo, revealed that there's going to be a "Lupin III" Easter egg in "Cars 3".
He closed with footage from “Big Hero 6,” Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest feature, which premiered Thursday as the festival’s opening film, and a peek at the next “Cars,” complete with a discreet “Lupin III” tribute in the shape of an old Citroen 2CV.

Randy Newman is returning to score Cars 3. I never understood why Newman was replaced by Giacchino for Cars 2 to begin with.
Q: What’s the ETA on that one?

Randy Newman: I don’t know. Probably I’ll be done by the middle of this year with it. I’m just doing arrangements. I’ve recorded the songs, but I just have arrangements to do, which I find difficult, always. I would think next year. Since I’m doing a few movies and so I can’t go on that much. I’m doing Cars 3, another movie, and then Toy Story 4. But the album’s my main interest.

Maybe they thought Giacchino was a better fit for the spy action romp that was Cars 2? Since it seems that Cars 3 is supposed to be more in line with the original, it makes sense that they're going back to Newman this time though.

It's gonna take a lot to sell me on this one though. Unless the trailer really sells it, I'll probably wait for the discount theater run or even the Blu-ray.

Interesting they would bring back newman for anything. He seemed to imply they might not want to work with him after what happened in toy story 3. They ended up using unfinished pieces which is why so much of it sounded recycled. He intended to work on them more but Lee Unkrich liked the scratch tracks so much he inisted on using them as is.

Plot details and concept art for Cars 3 have been released.
Championship racer Lightning McQueen will need help to compete in the increasingly high-tech racing world of the upcoming Cars 3. That’s where the new trainer comes in — the sleek, yellow Cruz Ramirez is a young Hispanic female race car who instructs Lightning McQueen, as this exclusive concept art depicts during a beach run. “Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks,” says Cars 3 director Brian Fee.

Pixar's anthropomorphic Cars franchise has followed Lightning McQueen as a rookie racing for the Piston Cup in Cars (2006) and around the globe in the World Grand Prix in Cars 2 (2011). But in Cars 3 (in theaters June 16, 2017), McQueen has progressed beyond veteran status. “Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time,” says Fee. “(McQueen) is not an old man, but he's one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.”

These questions grow louder after a race trouncing by upstart Jackson Storm. “Jackson Storm is the face of these rookies who have come onto the scene,” says Fee. “And McQueen is in a position where his entire racing generation is being pushed out. But it’s too early to be shown the door right now.” Ramirez aims to help him adapt and close the technical gap. The duo prepare in the racing off-season for McQueen’s one chance to show he’s got the goods in the Florida 500 (the equivalent of the Daytona 500). “Everyone can relate to feeling like someone is at their heels, that they might be a little outdated in something they used to be very good at, feeling an expiration date. And knowing you need someone to help you get a second chance," says Fee.

Cars 3 will feature McQueen with his signature Cars look and bring back familiar characters from the original's Radiator Springs, including tow-truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), girlfriend Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt) and auto-body shop owner Ramone (Cheech Marin). The story will stay in America, hitting historical race sites throughout the country. “This movie is a love letter to racing and the American way,” says Fee. “We’re inspired by the Americana you see traveling through the South where every small town has a dirt track.”

As am I, given it's something at some point in our lives, through ought various we all feel like this. Heck I know I do, especially given this is my last year in my twenties and will be 30 next year. Going back to college I felt I wasn't able to keep up with Math class so had to get a tutor who helped me re-learn all of it given it had been 13 years since I was in high school.

Finally some news about the film! Until now we didn’t even know who was going to direct it. Though I didn’t mind they made Mater the main character in Cars 2, I’m glad McQueen is going to be the protagonist again in this film. The story details revealed don’t sound bad, seems like it could have potential. However, I feel something’s missing. Something more is needed to make the story interesting in my opinion. But this is just a preview, probably when we get a full synopsis it will feel more complete. At least, I suppose there'll be some subplots. One thing I can already picture is Sally being jealous of McQueen’s new trainer and that there will be misunderstandings regarding their relationship.

The first Cars is one of my favourite Pixar films, I also enjoyed the sequel but I admit it’s probably the worst Pixar film to date. I hope this third film can redeem the franchise, but I don’t have much faith in it, at least not yet. We'll see when more details from the film are revealed.

Why does John Lasseter talk as if anyone cares about Cars 3?

No one does.

The Good Dinosaur proved there is no floor for Pixar now. Unnecessary sequels have been bricking it.

No one wants a Cars 3. No one wanted a Cars 2. Cars 2 was also some of the worst crap out there.

Cannot wait until Cars 3 fails to make $100m.

Lasseter has lost the plot. (been awhile though)

Is this what you're referring to?
Pixar exec and director John Lasseter teased the upcoming project on the Finding Dory blue carpet in talking to EW’s Marc Snetiker.

“Lightning McQueen, he’s awesome. We’ve got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It’s a very emotional story. It’s a little bit more akin to Cars 1, where you get into a deep emotion with him,” Lasseter said Wednesday. “It’s really a special story. It’s very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson.”

The official Pixar site has updated the official synopsis for Cars 3:
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
