It's funny you talked about her snuffing them out. When you said that I was thinking: "This is the reference to the villain's song that never made it to a final movie" ("Snuff Out the Light" from Emperor's New Groove)

But anyway, I saw it and I absolutely enjoyed it! It was just so wonderful to watch the amount of detail and seeing it all come together. For me, it was like watching an animated version of The Princess Bride where it is slightly parodying the fairy tale aspect with contemporary humor but at the same time never losing sight of the characters. Rapunzel is one of the best heroines to come from Disney in a long while. She was a very interesting character in how she wrestled with her emotions and the fact that she was a bit of a klutz made her more endearing. Flynn certainly wasn't as annoying as the trailers made him look and Mother Gothel...Wow! They went back to creating a really good villain who was both funny and also quite frightening. As far as comic relief goes, I would say

The songs were not the greatest but they really helped tell the story and that earns them points. They tell the story instead of being Big Lipped Alligator moments.

"Snuff Out the Light" is fantastic; a great reference to have, even if it sailed over my head.

And I think The Princess Bride is exactly the way to describe Tangled's tone–sincere but not overly serious.

Yeah, Gothel and her obsession with keeping the Sun flower to herself totally reminded me of the scrapped plot of The Kingdom in the Sun, and how Yzma originally wanted to get rid of the sun because of her wrinkles.

Still, though I would’ve liked her to have been given a more dramatic film/plot, Yzma is still way >>>> than Gothel (in my opinion, of course).

Ok, I did get to see this on opening day and I gotta say that the theater was packed so that's a good sign of ticket sales (at least in my area).

First of all, I thought the movie was a little draggy in the beginning but it eventually picked up when Flynn and Rapunzel met.

I really didn't feel a connection with "how evil" Mother Gothel is. I think she was lacking something, I just can't put my finger on it. Her song reminded me A LOT of "Poor Unfortunate Souls".

I think Mandy Moore did a wonderful job with providing the voice for Rapunzel. She really brings that Disney princess vibe to the film. I don't think they could have found anyone else better to fit that part.

I may catch flack for this but my absolute favorite scene (and song) in the film is with the vikings in the pub.

I don't really think this was Alan Menken's best work either. It was so not up to par for him....but it was still good.

All in all, it was good but not perfect. I don't regret seeing it in theaters and I will be the first one in line to buy it when it's released on Blu-ray but there's something missing and like I said before about Mother Gothel, I just can't put my finger on it.

With all that being said, they should have saved The Princess and the Frog for their 50th movie instead of Tangled.

Once again I want to clarify, I'm not hating on the movie but it kinda let me down based on previews and hype.

princekido, that art is so gorgeous! I'm already thinking that I won't be able to wear the shirt once I get it because I don't want to ruin it  And I second the request for a HQ version, please!

Also thanks sotiris for alllll those vids! I was so happy to see that clip from the credits....the artwork is so interesting. If anyone was wondering about the monkey in the turban, the artbook says there was a scrapped idea to have Flynn & Rapunzel meet a band of gypsies....so I'm guessing that's where it's from.

EDIT: Image

This made me so happy :D

Sorry, awful picture I know---I saw it when I was checking my email on Yahoo! It's popular trending topics, although I'm not entirely sure what that entails...twitter and the like, I guess? I was just pleased to see it's apparently very popular! :D

What two instances are you referring to exactly? I've seen the film a few times and didn't notice Rapunzel pushing Gothel up against the wall. When Gothel breaks the mirror, it's her own fault, she yanks her hand away from Rapunzel's grip and loses her balance and knocks over the mirror. There was no shove or push by Rapunzel there at all. That was the only instance where I could see maybe you would think something like that happened.

Fairy Tale castles must be using the same services as Princess Peach's. :p

LOL! I'm serious! It baffles me how people can just sneak in and intrude! First, Mother Gothel, then Flynn, then the thugs & old cupid man. It was quite honestly pissing me off. You would think the King & Queen would learn by now to keep their castle safe after the kidnapping of their only daughter. I don't know. I would say they deserved Rapunzel being stolen, but they apparently didn't learn their lesson the first time!

They were all pretty sneaky about it, and plus, if it weren't for a bad security, we wouldn't have our story ;P

I was loling cause i agree with you. Except it wasn't that they had a lack of security, but that their security suck royal(pun not intended) balls.

That's a good point...maybe Rapunzel had referred to her as "Mother Gothel" when she talked about her, like someone would mention their "Grandpa Joe" to someone...?
eralkfang wrote:I See the Light was nice, but fairly standard and The Little Mermaid-esque, right down to the kiss cut short by main villain's sidekicks.
Maybe that's why so many of us like it...? It definitely had "Kiss the Girl" vibes, but I adore "Kiss the Girl"..

The Box Office is now officially on fire for Tangled:

I cannot believe the morons of Disney's marketing department actually got something right for a change. There will be lots of champagne and tears monday morning in the Hat building. Tangled is locked to become the biggest moneymaker since The Lion King...

Well, Tangled is a MUCH better movie than MegaMind IMO. I don't think we should compare the 2. The would just be mean

How can you call them morons if they do so well? They did the same thing as Bridge To Terabithia (advertised it as if it were Narnia) and it was very successful. I don't think you should call them morons just because they don't do something the way you would do it.

Disney has had an amazing year; two billion grossing films and now this :D
