I am wondering if this upgrade is really worth it.

From the clip of the "Wizards of Special Effects" on the Disney website...and the spiffy new cover...I'll definitely be double-dipping...Matt wrote:I am wondering if this upgrade is really worth it.
i've also noticed that the length of the movie is 117 minutes and the old DVD has the time for 139 Minutes long. What is the difference?Cordy_Biddle wrote:From the clip of the "Wizards of Special Effects" on the Disney website...and the spiffy new cover...I'll definitely be double-dipping...Matt wrote:I am wondering if this upgrade is really worth it.
117 minutes represents the standard cinema cut of "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (the one seen on video and on TV right up until 2001); the 139 minute version restores a lot of the deleted musical numbers ("Flourish and a Flair", "Nobody's Problems") and additional scenes which were cut prior to the movie's premiere.Matt wrote:i've also noticed that the length of the movie is 117 minutes and the old DVD has the time for 139 Minutes long. Ahhh, so the movie itself is a good reason to pick this up.Cordy_Biddle wrote:117 minutes represents the standard cinema cut of "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (the one seen on video and on TV right up until 2001); the 139 minute version restores a lot of the deleted musical numbers ("Flourish and a Flair", "Nobody's Problems") and additional scenes which were cut prior to the movie's premiere.Matt wrote: i've also noticed that the length of the movie is 117 minutes and the old DVD has the time for 139 Minutes long. I thought it was the Portobello Road scene that got extended. I remember it being much shorter before it was released to DVD in 2001.Cordy_Biddle wrote: 117 minutes represents the standard cinema cut of "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (the one seen on video and on TV right up until 2001); the 139 minute version restores a lot of the deleted musical numbers ("Flourish and a Flair", "Nobody's Problems") and additional scenes which were cut prior to the movie's premiere.
Yes, the "Portobello Road" sequence is also extended on the 139 minute cut. What's also good about the extended cut is the development and arc of the Roddy McDowall character who really didn't seem as part of the story in the 117 minute version.Barbossa wrote:I thought it was the Portobello Road scene that got extended. I think I'm not going to bother double-dipping on this one. I'll wait and see what the UD reviewers have to say about it and compare it with the 30th anniversary edition that came out in 2001.
It depends on if you want to rebuy basically the same disc as 2001, except with new cover art, a lack of disc art, and a new 8-minute featurette.Matt wrote:I am wondering if this upgrade is really worth it.
When you put it like that scaps NO lolEscapay wrote:It depends on if you want to rebuy basically the same disc as 2001, except with new cover art, a lack of disc art, and a new 8-minute featurette.Matt wrote:I am wondering if this upgrade is really worth it.
Also, regarding the 117/139 minute discrepancy, from memory, here's what's re-instated:
-Scene between Captain Greer & Mrs. Hobday, it precedes "The Old Home Guard"
-Brief scene of the soldiers dispersing at the end of "The Old Home Guard"
-Mrs. Hobday asking Reverend Jelk about the vicar.
-Carrie talks about Aunt Bessie and why they had to move to the country.
-Charlie says "Mango Wuzzle"
-Reverend Jelk hops about at Eglantine's front door and tries to start a conversation, but she slams the door on him after he gives her the letter.
-Paul's first attempt at the bedknob didn't work (he forgot to tell it where to go)
-"With a Flair" (the theatrical version only presents the dialogue portions, all the lyrics are cut out)
-Eglantine explains what Substitutiary Locomotion is to Professor Browne.
-Eglantine's song "Don't Let Me Down" (in the middle of "Eglantine", itself cut a bit as well)
-A few lyrics and several dance sequences in "Portobello Road" are re-instated (during one segment, the sequence comes from a workprint as it was the only film footage that survived, you can easily notice the difference in quality, especially the reds).
-Swinburne complains about pushing the bed.
-Professor Browne and Charlie go to the shop and talk with Mrs. Hobday, Reverend Jelk spies on them.
-Eglantine sings "Nobody's Problems" after Professor Browne leaves.

Well, I really wanted to believe that Disney would make this a no-brainer upgrade purchase. Shame...Matt wrote:Didn't I say this was a pass in the first part of the thread? lol I was right! I do want the slip cover though![]()
It does indeed and this is very disappointing considering the legitimate upgrades to Pete's Dragon that new DVD brought us.Escapay wrote:I'm passing. Bedknobs and Broomsticks deserves better than this, dammit. Disney, you really f__ked it up this time.

What? That long?ajmrowland wrote:On the plus side, the inevitable future BLu-ray release will likely have a completely new master. Who knows when that is, though? I'll say 2016, at least.
