Oh MAN..... this REALLY bothers me now.
And I am sure they took the effect off by mistake when they re-did the movie for Imax, which is the version we always get now. WHAT THE F....
God, I think I still have my VHS somewhere...

What other changes they made to Aladdin besides the lyrics changes and the twinkling stars?

Cause that light on the ground is definitely not in the platinum edition.
That said, I hate all the changes they made to Aladdin.
It is on my copy? Mine looks like the one on the left. I don't know where that new one came from, I would have noticed it right away as being off.
Edit: whoops, misread the word platinum, I was talking about the diamond.

I was wondering about that since the Platinum and the Diamond have different masters. It's not on the Signature as well, and I actually think the Signature is an upscale of the Platinum.

Kyle.... pretty sure it doesn't. It is the shot right after the cave appears and it first opens it's mouth. Is there an animated projection of yellow/orange light on the ground in front of the mouth?
Fareb.... several changes have been made. The ones that first come to mind:
- During "Friend like me", during the line "baklavaaaaaaa"... the pastries have been reanimated and shaded... looks far less smooth.
- When Jasmine frees the birds from the cage, they are now (poorly) shaded when they fly away.
- During A Whole New World, they are racing downwards ("don't you dare close your eyes"), the sailboats are now moving... which combines with the camera move, creates a very strange effect.
- Removal of the infamous line during the balcony scene "good teenagers take off their clothes"/"c'mon kitty.... scat... go..."
I know I have noticed others, but can't think of them now.
Also, the companion book said a lot of shots where the characters look small, they were redrawn with more detail and colored linework.

That line was restored in the Diamond (and Signature).

That's what I heard, but I guess it was wrong.

This thing just makes me want to throw away all my Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King DVDs and Blu-rays.

Just to clarify, the missing light in that Cave of Wonders scene is only missing in the Platinum Edition right? It's not missing in the Diamond/Signature Editions?

I just checked, the Diamond Edition doesn't have it as well.

Same. It's so discouraging to see such little things changed all over the place. I'm just...
Why?!?? All those
little things add up over years and years of different releases (every one adding their own list to the pile of changes or screw-ups) to the point that watching the VHS tapes I grew up with feels like a revelation after unknowingly getting used to the things that are wrong with the DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Do you know if the Signature Edition does?

Wow, so the error is basically on every edition of the film after the VHS thanks to the IMAX remastering. Shouldn't even be surprised.

Yes, and I guess it is a small error that Disney didn't even notice it. If they had scanned the films, this would have never happened.

Then again, if this was one of the IMAX changes, this might have been purposefully altered.

I've posted my distaste for Disney's handling of home media releases cover art, and with all this time off, I decided to give making my own art a spin to see if I could create something for my favorite films that I felt was better than anything they had released cover art-wise in the past. I didn't want to take the time to start from scratch, so I used screencaps, combined and shaded them and used posters and concept art for the rest. It's a little rough still, but I thought I'd share just to show there's people out there who can create something better than the unfortunate compositions Disney loves to approve and release. Hope you enjoy. if anyone wants the art without the banners, I'm more than happy to share. Considering doing one for Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast and a few others. We'll see though.

Wow, great job nomad2010! If only Disney's covers were half as good as this...
