insanely confusing. I mean if it was some sort of joke, I do hope you realise it was both unfunny and in bad taste.
I was kidding but if you say then i"ll delete it.

Why did Disney change The Frog Princess

Posted: Sat Sep 15, 2007 2:54 pm
by Rumpelstiltskin
Or The Princess and the Frog as it is now renamed?

Originally there was a girl named Maddy who worked as a chambermaid, which is actually historically accurate when it comes to how many black girls lived in New Orleans back then.

The prince was from what I understand originally an European white prince called Harry. He is now a person named Naveen from a fictional kingdom, and is probably neither black or white.

Why change these parts of the story? If Disney did it because they was afraid of making a movie that would be seen as racist, I would like to know what it was that made them take the decision. Was it because they were reading the posts on discussion boards, because of something media said, because some organisations sent a complain to them or for another external reason?

I have to admit I really hate it when political correctness has a significant
influence on a movie not because it otherwise would be offensive, but because of a fear that there could be a chance that someone might would give it an interpretation which gives room for possible offensive elements. This kind of fear should not be a major factor when making movies. Such domestication and restraints in the industry will always have a negative effect in the long run. With too many sacrifices, a price will have to be paid. As many alreayd knows, the Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons suffered when the Fleischers had to tone them down a bit to make sure nobody was "offended", and The Comics Code Authority had a similar influence on many comics.

But for all I know, maybe there is a another reason for the change that actually makes sense when it is revealed.

Mainly all the changes made to this movie are made so Disney doesn't get in trouble with the black community. I heard that they changed her name from Maddy to Tiana because Maddy was too much of a slave name. I'm black and I liked Maddy better. Disney just doesn't want her to be too different because they feel they're treeding on hot water with this movie. I didn't even mind that she was a chambermaid. It seems like she may be along the lines of Belle to me. You know take care of her lil sister and family and all that other stuff.

Yeah I know! What's wrong with Maddy?! And Cinderella was a chambermaid too! Whatever, I still am soooo happy for the return of 2D animation! :)

they just don't need bad publicity with their first re-invention of 2-d.
All the above is true, they don't want to make the same ''mistake'' as with song of the south, a film, which is to date still not released on dvd, due to it's mixed response with the american public and it's reference to the black community.

I'm sure we'll see a decent compromise though, the character design seems decent enough and as far as I can tell there's nothing offensive sofar. I myself embrace the fact that disney finally reaches out to a more diverse public instead of ignoring a large population of the world by only providing ''white'' princesses, altough one has to wonder wether Mowgli and Jasmine are really all that pale in the original stories or disney designs for that matter.

So more power to you disney!
:D
Still, their finally understanding that there

I think Ariel'sprince was saying that the CHARACTER of Tiana sounds like a mixture of the CHARACTERS Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, and Pocahontas. I don't think he was referring to the voice of Tiana, just her characteristics.

"Cinderella, ella, ella, eh, ella, ella, ella"...that popped in my head...yup.

I like both Maddy and Tiana. But, there's a Maddie on "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody", so Tiana would be a brand-new Disney name.

I kinda think Tiana is more stereotypical than Maddy is slave like.

I like Tiana. It almost sounds like "tiara" which is very princess-like. :D

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/toy_sto ... s/1688081/ (via www.animated-news.com):

Pixar is also revisiting 2D animation with The Princess and the Frog. "John Musker and Ron Clements (Aladdin, The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid) are directing it for Disney. It's going to be great. We have an awful lot of animators at Pixar who have been trained in hand drawn. We all still love the art form. What I love sometimes is when creative people have tremendous constraints, brilliant ideas come out of it."

What does Pixar have to do with "The Princess and the Frog"?!?!?!?!?!?!? :x Why did Fred Topel of RottenTomatoes.com feel the need to say that Pixar is revisiting 2D animation, when clearly it's Disney (yay for Mr. Lasseter for mentioned that it's a DISNEY movie!!!)??!?!?!?! Argh, that made me mad.... :x But, why did John Lasseter mention that Pixar animators have been trained in 2D?!?!? Who exactly is animating this movie?!?!? Isn't Disney going to recreate a 2D department? Or are the Pixar animators going to be the only ones working on "The Princess and the Frog"? I'd rather have the Pixar people make it than have it outsourced to some random company, but it's a DISNEY movie, for Pete's sake!!!! DISNEY, PLEASE MAKE A 2D DEPARTMENT IF YOU HAVEN"T ALREADY!!!! :x

last time I checked it was DISNEY that fired all their animators and sold off their desks.

last time I checked it was also Disney that bought Pixar to fix their animation department. So don't be surprised when Pixar animators work on a Disney film.

Disney Animation Studios will be hiring crew to work on The Princess and the Frog sometime in the first half of next year.

According to this, Disney hasn't even hired the crew yet for TP&tF. So, I wonder if Disney will be keeping these people to work on their upcoming traditionally animated projects...?

animation hasn't started yet on Princess, so naturally Disney isn't letting a bunch of animators sit around and do nothing. There is a big chance though, that this team moves on to Disney's next project when their work wraps up. At least that's how it worked in the 90's. Animators and other visual developers hopped from film to film. But back then they were guaranteed work, because Disney always had a bunch of movies in the pipeline. The situation has changed drastically, so it's all a mystery what's happening inside the walls of Disney and Pixar.

wich is exciting imo.
